I had 4!!! I had a high GPA and a high score on my HESI so that compensated for my missing classes. My first semester of nursing was relatively easy (Introduction to Nursing and Introduction to Pharmacology) so I took Anatomy and Physiology 2 without any problems. The next semester was our first clinical semester and between clinical (and all the paperwork that accompanies that), 2 lecture classes, and 2 lab classes, there was no way I was going to take my remaining classes! So I forfeited my summer and took Microbiology, Nutrition, and Human Growth and Development. It sucks, but there is NO WAY I am taking those classes with my nursing semesters. There is just way too much going on! I could have taken Micro and Nutrition next summer, but that is the summer before I enter my last semester and figured I would need a mental break before that craziness starts!

Hi everyone! I'm going to be entering my 3rd semester of my ADN program in August, and one of my friends invited me to her wedding the first weekend of September. The problem is, her wedding is in a different state! Her wedding is over Labor Day weekend, but it is 10 hours away from where I live! When I told her I didn't know if I would be able to make it, she kept insisting that it was a long weekend and I didn't have school that Monday. She really doesn't understand how much work we do in the nursing program, and my weekends generally consist of HOMEWORK! I would love to go, if it was more local, but given that my clinical won't let up until about 2 pm Friday afternoon, I would have to drive straight there from where I live, get there in the middle of the night, go to the wedding and leave the next day to drive 10 hours back! We all know how expensive nursing school is, so flying is definitely not an option right now. I need some help trying to let her down, because she just doesn't understand why I can't go since it's a long weekend. I really feel like a bad friend right now , but I have nursing school, work, and a 3 year old that really need my attention and driving 20 hours over one weekend to a wedding just isn't justifiable right now. Please help!

You normally stay in your area. The Collier campus has clinicals at Naples Community Hospital (downtown and north collier). I know the Lee students are all over the place at all the Lee Memorial Hospitals, and I'm not sure where Charlotte students have clinical at, but they stay in Charlotte county. You will get to spend one day at a nursing home (Glenview for Collier students) but that is also in Collier county and the other campuses go to different nursing homes in their counties.

Also, if it makes you guys feel better, I was accepted into the Collier program with 88 points last fall and there were about 500 people applying between all the programs. And I know I didn't have the lowest points in my class, so you should all do fine! Just sit back and wait for the phone call! And when you get accepted you are going to have to get your immunizations updated, get CPR certified, get a physical from your doctor, and go get background and drug tested, so enjoy your couple of free weeks! :-)

rprado: You will start your clinicals about a month into your second semester. You have about 3-4 weeks of clinical days at lab at school before you start at the hospital and they will teach you the basics to get you through your first weeks at clinical such as changing an occupied bed, taking vital signs, how to check blood glucose, and doing bed baths. As the weeks progress you will learn how to give meds (oral and injectable) and other skills that you can do if the opportunity presents itself during clinical.

Patricia: The first semester is a piece of cake. You will have Intro to Nursing and Intro to Pharm once a week (it was Tuesdays for us)... You have a culture fair project and a care plan project to do in Intro to Nursing and that takes up the majority of the semester along with a couple of tests. Intro to pharm was just medication calculation, it was pretty basic, but you do have to take 3 medication calculation quizzes that you have to pass with a 90 or better to continue on with the course. I believe you have two attempts at taking the quiz, but they aren't hard at all and the professors are very helpful. The grading scales are different for nursing school... A 92-100 is an A, 91-85 is a B, and 77-84 is a C, and you must pass the class with a C or higher. So it's a little bit harder to get A's like you would have in your pre-reqs but definitely attainable. The fundamentals semester is a little harder. We have Fundamentals Lab on Mondays (we also have to go to the hospital to pick up our patient assignments for clinicals and do all of our care plan paperwork on Mondays), Tuesday is Clinical day from 6:30 to 1:00, Wednesday is Fundamentals and Health Assessment lecture from 10-4, and we have Health Assessment Lab on Thursdays. So we stay pretty busy... And if you have the afternoon lab on Mondays, be prepared to stay up late doing paperwork! It has kept me busy, I heard next semester is hard too (adult 1 semester).. but we also have a week to do our clinical paperwork instead of doing it all the night before, so that's a plus! Overall, I have had a really good time in the program so far. You are going to get very close to your classmates and the days just fly by! Just be prepared for lots of group projects and presentations! If you are shy at all you get over it really quick! I hope that you guys make it into the program. The professors I've had so far are excellent. And I feel like I have learned so much in such a short amount of time. Also, there are a lot of people who work in my classes, but if it's at all possible to work just part time or not work at all it definitely helps. You can manage either way, but you will be very busy once you hit Fundies. :-)
