  1. While I'm not a single mother myself :) I have plenty of friends at uni that are in the same boat. They say it's hard work juggling a family life, uni and a job all at once but they work together and support each other. They do extremely well at uni (usually getting high distinctions or distinctions) and in my opinion will make excellent nurses, but the main thing that they say is getting them through it is each other, and most of all the support from their kids. Good luck, and I'm sure you'll be fine.
  2. At our Uni I'd say we've had about 60-70% drop out since we started 3 years ago. Not necessarily because the course was too hard, but mainly because once they realise the work involved they were kinda turned off the idea. We started off with around 180 students, now we're down to something like 60.
  3. Thanks for the quick reply Leslie, that definitely sounds like the approach to take. Thanks again :)
  4. We just had a lecture telling us to expect the same treatment. Our lecturer simply told us to stand up for ourselves. I know when I get out there in the real world that I'm not gonna know anything except basics. The nurses that are working there should know this too cause they've all been in the same position before so they should empathise. If they're too cold hearted to give you a break then tell them to find another person to kick around. Admittedly you have to take the good with the bad, and I'm sure there will be days when everything goes wrong and the whole shift is heavy for everyone, but if your getting the worst patients day in and day out then I think it's time you told them to give you a break or put you on another ward. I'm sure you'll find your niche where the people are nice and treat you like one of their own. Good luck anyway, I'll be able to experience the feeling for myself soon I guess
  5. Hey all, I only just found this site now that I'm in my final semester of Uni in Australia. Why could I have not found this sooner!! Anyway, this is a great site and I'm sure I'll be able to find out great stuff to keep me going once I start work as an RN. Well back to the topic at hand, I've been told to write an essay on Autocracy in nursing and I can't for the life of me find anything that suggests nursing is an Autocratic profession. I was hoping that maybe some of you who have been working in the field for a while tell me if this is true or should I argue against it? I can't convince myself that Autocracy is used in nursing so I don't know how I'm supposed to convince others?? Oh well, I won't ramble on. Thanks for any help that you can pass along, or if you agree that this is a stupid subject then feel welcome to express your feelings with me :angryfire
