High School Student Thinking Of Volunteering In the ED, Couple Of Q's
You are off to a great start! I wish my HS had a program like that. I volunteered while I was in HS and I don't think I will ever forget that experience. I was not in one particular dept, I rotated all over the facility. The volunteer office would page me and I would be sent from unit to unit. Now, in the ED, our volunteers basically are available to assist pt's/families to rooms, drinks, phones, and hand out warm blankets. It sounds like you are looking for more of a tech position which would let you get hands on experience with vitals, bandaging, performing EKG's. Every hospital is different in their job descriptions. But volunteering is also a great foot in the door! :)

Considering Relocation To Austin
I used to live in Austin. I worked at Brackenridge. Austin is a nice place to live! It's a college town, lots of liberals. There are lots of hospitals hiring. Try St.David's, Seton, (St.David's and Seton have many locations), Brackenridge, CHOA (Childrens Hospital Of Austin), Heart Hospital of Austin.

First day in ER...
Kevin - you are on your way to being a great ER nurse! I didn't go into med surg first, I went into critical care straight out of school. I precept student nurses, new nurses, and paramedic students and I will tell you how many students that just stand up against the wall and watch (and that's okay). Not many will jump in and bag a pt! Now that is totally stepping up to the plate! Everybody has their own comfort level. Good luck!!!

Anyone ever work for Optum???..
Yes, they are very structured. I have friends that work there in nurseline and other departments. Some like it a lot and others are tolerating it. Even if you don't have the 5 years, I would try anyway. Good luck!

Cough, croup, asthma???
I tell you, when it is your own child why does all your knowledge go flying out the window!!! :uhoh21: I am not a pulmonary nurse but I could use any "opinions" if possible. My 4 year old child has had a cough for about a week. No other s/s at all. Just would say the cough was bothersome. Seemed to increase at nighttime. This morning he woke up with a hoorifice type of cough and I thought I heard wheezing. I ran to get my stethoscope and listened and initially heard expiratory wheezing, respirations at 32 bpm. Stated difficulty breathing no retractions, no resp distress. The cough sounded "generous" if that makes any sense at all. Not full of phlegm but had substance in sound to it, like a dry cough. I kept putting my stethoscope on and then I was hearing all the abnormal lung sounds just because I was listening and looking for them. Oddly enough it has been very humid for the past 2 days. I kept him home with me today and he has improved but has a dry cough, maybe coughing about every 15mins. No other s/s at all. I really sat here for a long time go over the "facts" and debating, do I call the pediatrician then I thought well, his Well CHild checkup is in a week so I could wait til then or is this more serious. Now I am thinking was this croup? But it really wasn't a barky cough at all and he has had a persistent cough all week. What do you all think? Just looking for some direction here.

What stethoscope should i get???
I love my Littman Cardiology STC. I have purchased scrubs from Allheart.com and got exactly what I ordered and fast. I purchased my stethoscope from Redding medical and they found the stethoscope I wanted and Fed Ex'd it to me at no charge.

Nursing School Application
I didn't have to write an essay but I did have to take the NET exam. Find out from your school which exam you will have to take and get that study guide. The study guide is worth the money and invest time in it and you should be okay. Some schools even offer bridge classes in math or for the entrance exam itself. Check with your school secretary.

Central texas college
I am a graduate of Central Texas College (CTC). It was an excellent program...great clinical skills and clinical sites. The nursing building where all of your classes will be is not very old. Good facilities. I am glad I went there, served me well clinically and for the NCLEX too. Hope that helps! Pm me if you have more questions.
