@thecareerstudent when i think about it and as a new yorker i surely would miss bagels! lol @bisson when u say your rent is only 200 cheaper that doesnt sound like much less but is the space you have much bigger? As far as salary im surprised you didnt get any bonuses for experience because i once worked with a recruiter that was from richmond and they took those things into consideration but richmond wasnt were i wanted to be in va. there are some staffing agencies that i saw for va and thinking about sending my resume out more....i hate that everything is online based. i never got a job that way in nyc....i like going to the HR dept and having a face to face resume drop off but its hard when im in nyc!

hey Bisson! thanks for the reply...i definitely know that va salary is about half of nyc but does cost of living really even it out? what is the pay rate at bon secours? how often do you end up doing mandatory overtime? what kind of unit do you work on....im currently happy with my job in nyc i just want a change of lifestyle. I lived in nyc my whole life, my bf's family is in chesapeake and i visit but i guess its not the same as when u relocate there. how are you adjusting to the lifestyle?

@jules anne...thanks for the pm! unfortunately i cant even send you a reply through PM yet lol i have visited southern va many times. My boyfriend's mother lives in chesapeake and it kind of what opened up my thoughts on moving there. Its slower than nyc but still has entertainment. The only thing holding me back is the salary. I know making what i make now in nyc isnt ideal in va but i'm just wondering if the salary that va is giving rn's is enough to live comfortably...im looking to purchase a home and hoping the salary will support it. I was also wondering if shifts are usually 12hrs(3days a week) or is it 8hrs(5days a wk)? I already have a virginia license...it just came in the mail! :) Now im just trying to get interviews. I know that in nyc applying online gets a person nowhere and you literally have to show up at the HR office and ask to speak to a recruiter and hand off you resume that way if your looking for a job better yet just an interview! Is this the same in va? or do online applications really get looked at? lol

when i had graduated i never had any interviews with staff. Usually meet with recruiter, director and sometimes nurse manager. usually interact with the staff when i see the unit but maybe its a good idea to have fellow nurses interview?

i am a bmcc graduate! mr ****** isnt nice until your in the program lol as far as the night program there its 2 nights a week from i think 5-830 or so then clinicals is on the weekend. tuition is fairly cheap because it is cuny. i believe you can come in and be a nursing major but you have to take pre req's you will need eng101, anatomy and physiology1, psych100 and medical math calc. i wasnt a night student but if my memory serves me right there are 1 or 2 other science classes night students had to take in order to apply to the nursing program(nursing110,220, etc. +clinicals) the program itself is 4 semesters(2yrs) as far as pre req's if you take them all in one semester. there are other sciences like microbiology and some people finish all of those so they dont have to worry about them while they take the core nursing courses. hope this helped!

i am new to this website and have been thinking about moving to hampton roads area of va. I am currently in nyc and making about 80k/yr and i heard that in southern va(chesapeake,norfolk, hamptons) rn's make about $19/hr, is this true? if so does cost of living really evens out? i know that there are alot of differentials but what do you typically make as an rn in yearly salary? i have about 3 yrs of experience at this time. any info would be great. @jules anne i would love to pm you for some more info but i think as a new member i have to post at least 15 times first?
