So I recently applied to a new graduate position in my home town. The position was assisting in an administrative role in a long term care facility, conducting quality assurance, research and developing education sessions. This is the type of work I am pursuing and one of the reasons I am pursuing a MSN in September. It is only a few days before the closing date so I contacted the individuals who's name was on the posting (DOC's) to ensure she received my application. She did, however was confused when I discussed the job description as she stated it was a regular staff floor nurse position... when I pointed out the job description and her error she emailed me back told me the posting had been made before she became DOC (Obviously not true since she has been the DOC there for over 2 years and posted the description last week), changed it and asked if I would still be interested. However I am not interested as I was not looking for a floor nursing position. Regarding bedside care I have been with an organization for over four years who offered me a bedside position paying competitively once I graduated, however bedside care was not the direction I planned my career to go. Although I appreciate the experience it can bring it would not be my first choice. I now have to inform the DOC I am not interested in pursuing an interview for the position, as if I am unable to find a job, my organization (which I am still with) will give me full time RN work. Does anyone know of a good way to say thank you but no longer interested at this time, without burning bridges? Jobs are rare in my town so if something goes wrong and the position with my current company doesn't work out and at the LTC facility comes up in the future and catches my eye I would still like to be able to be considered. Thank you for any advice!

Hello all, So I recently graduated from my BScN program this last December and preparing to write my CRNE next week. I've also began to look into some jobs. First a little background on me, I eventually want to become a faculty nursing educator for a BScN program and gain some teaching experience during my last school placement. I have also applied to take my MSN this upcoming September to hopefully lead towards that goal. Although I'm sure there is those that will think I'm making the biggest mistake of my life I don't have much interest in medical/surgical nursing and thus don't plan to begin my career there. If I had wanted to I would have accepted a position offered to me in the emerg (one of my final placements). My real interests however are in education, administration and research (not necessarily in that order). I have quite a bit prior research experience during some extracurricular's that I participated in while in the BSN program and have now published in a well known nursing journal with another publication in review. So now that you have a little background on my goals, and experience here is my predicament. I applied to a project lead position as an onsite coordinator for a multi hospital research project (I think most people call it a clinical research coordinator), not thinking I would be even close at receiving a call. Yet surprisingly I received a call and it sounds as though the position is mine if I would like it. Its part time (20 hours a week), non management, non union and pays the same as a local floor nurse, its temporary on a 2 year contract. However due to it being part time I would work homecare (have been doing homecare as a support worker for the past 5 years already) to keep up my skills and fill in my time. Not bad for a new grad... However I have also been offered a new grad position (funded through my government for seven months with possibility for hire afterwards) in a management position as an assistant director of nursing at a local LTC facility. This position is full time, unionized, and pays around the same as the other job offer. In the description it actually said I would be running education sessions, conducting research, chart auditing, quality improvement, enacting BON guidelines, etc. only thing is if I'm accepted to the MSN program in September the hours may be hard to work around (MAY be hard). I know a few are saying if theyre willing to hire new grads then run haha, but it actually isn't too bad since with the government funding we have a "mentor" so really its more of a assistant assistant director of care until my 7 months are up. So I'm looking for any feedback I can get from all of you as to a recommended job choice that may benefit my career down the line. Both are phenomenal opportunities that I wouldn't have expected to land as a new grad, but here I am haha. I think management would look phenomenal as a new grad and open a lot of doors down the road, however I also love research and feel with my current experience and my possible masters I could go pretty far in the research field. Hey all fellow students! So I'm a third year nursing student up in Ontario Canada. A fellow student and I were talking about plans for over the summer. We were both thinking about doing some volunteering over seas. Then the other day I get an email from our school offering 25,000 in start up costs for starting a non profit organization with a good business plan. So we started thinking, what do nurses do in their spare time... what little of it they have? Well most of us have part time jobs some as PSW's or other jobs in the health care field. What do we need to help us in our future career? Nursing experiences, why so many of us get these health care field jobs. What do nursing students want when it comes time for summer? Well a few of us need to work, and the rest want... vacation!! So we started thinking, why is there no company, business, organization that helps students find these great nursing experiences, that will help out during the school year? I mean most students didn't even know we can work as Personal Support Workers once we finish our first year. I personally have been lucky enough to find amazing opportunities over the last few years of school working two years in Palliative care, and three in Home care. I did this on my own however there are many students having to take part time jobs in other health care sectors as they can't find nursing jobs. What if there was a non for profit organization that you could contact that would set up nursing students in the most intense, high paced, greatest scope of practice as possible. No more doing laundry, running back and forth gathering materials. You would be placed in a much needed fast paced environment where you are much needed, and will gain the most experience possible. This company would send you to low staffed hospitals with RN staff willing to help guide you in increasing you use of skill level. It would be up to the student to choose from a possible list of hospitals, cities, and places they could go to gain the best experience possible to help them in their field, it would be all hands on opportunities, very few "shadowing" opportunities. For those that would want an even greater experience of not just at home hospital work connected by us but we would also be setting up an international clinic staffed by a doctor, a few RN's and RPN's and many student RN's. Our income would be completely fund-raised, government donated and we would work with other agencies requiring student nurses for periods of time, that we would help set up in high experience situations such as how a home care agency works now. My question to you students out there is this: would you apply for a position that would give you an amazing opportunity, provide you with meals, transportation, and a vacation in your spare time? Would you rather look through other companies specializing in overseas travel however never specifically for nurses? Would you take a few months out of your summer to be able to gain experience and place on your resume out of country volunteer experience? How would my fellow students feel about this organization? Would there be anything you would like to see a nursing student specific placement organization work? Thanks for your input all!
