As a LPN in a rural MO area, the only jobs for LPN's in my area are SNF's (the bad ones). The hospital's, home healthcare companies, staffing agencies, etc.. All want RN's! And due to 6 ASN-RN programs in the area churining out 2 classes a year, they get them! I would give anything to work as a scrub tech...sounds like a dream job to me right now!

sleepRN... Your Mom is right, stay away from SNF's. I am convinced they are a small piece of hell on earth! Now with that new law they put on Hospitals being penalized for re-admit's an medicare Pt's I can only imagine how bad it's going to get. We will be stuck with with the liabilty because the Dr.'s won't send them out from the facilities.

I have been a LPN for 10 yrs, the majority of my work being in LTC/SNF. I recently took a job where I lasted all of ONE day. Definitly learned some major lessons, like...check to see if the DON is on censure due to Narc. diversion:facepalm: I couldn't tell you without writing a novel about the list of problems this place had but I worked 15.5 hrs without a break, never even peeded, was staff shorted a med tech and 3 CNA's... My orientation was one day and after requesting more time was "reassured" I would be "OK" because there would be other staff having POS meetings in the building:banhappy: SERIOUSLY!! Is this what our profession has been reduced to? When I came on for my shift there wasn't even a nurse to give me report! Honestly, I have worked in some places that reminded me of purgatory, but this one took the cake! I am now at the point where I am 100% sure that I can no longer work as a LPN in a LTC/SNF... I am not the kind of Nurse who signs that i gave a pill or did a Tx when in fact I didn't...If a Res. is crying telling me "PLEASE, I need to go to the bathroom" I won't walk off to let them pee/BM in a "adult brief", I actually care about their diginity and take them to the toliet! URGH!!!! Maybe I care too much?? Am I cut out for this line of work? I am now in limbo about trying to carry on with school and get my RN because I HATE being a LPN!! As a LPN you are either treated like crap at the hospital by your co-workers making wages like a high school student working at McDonalds OR your stuck in a LTC/SNF working like a dog and so time crunched that there is NO POSSIBLE WAY to give proper, legal, dignified care! So are you RN's dealing with these issues too? Is ALL Nursing jobs like this? I am seriously at the end of my rope, I love taking care of people, not neglecting them... RN's Please tell me there is hope, that you have a area of work a new grad RN can break into and LOVE.....

I have been a LPN since 2002, the first few years I went from one LTC facilty to the next, bouncing around due to bad work conditions and 99% of the time being afraid of losing my license due to illegal practices that so many of these facilities frequently incur. Of course all my exerience in Nursing & LTC work is charge Nurse. I had one home health care position that was a peds vent case, but even as a new grad nurse around here you are usually just hired on the spot if you have a valid license and "thrown in there". So my work record in the Nursing field isn't excellent by any means. My license state is MO so although continuing education isn't necessary, I have done online CE over the years to try and stay current on nursing practices. I have management experience in corporate agriculture , I owned and operated my own real estate company for several years, and also started a customer service business representing world renowned corporations. The past few years I have worked with my husband starting a international import and export buisness as well as helping set up new accounts and hiring for manufacturing. Due to life -changes, (probably a mid-life crisis,lol :), I have decided that I would like to give nursing a try again, I need to be independent from my husband and children and just actually have something that I can focus on, and I can actually get some credit and satisfaction that I have done this independently. I live in a rural area and have recently came across a LTC facilty in my area who is taking applications for a ADON, they stated "RN prefered but would consider LPN with extensive supervisory experience". So here is my real question, Do you think I would even be considered a option for this position or potientially laughed at ? I have spent the last 4 days updating myself on MDS plans,medicaid & medicare charting, assessment, care plans, OBRA, & JCS. I feel given all my previous experience in management I would not have any problems in regard to interpersonal communications, scheduling, etc.. And I feel that I could handle the responsibilites of the job. I'm just nervous about it.... What is your opinion?
