Hi all! What is the policy on HDC site rotation? Like for example if someone is receiving pain medication say q3h via HDC, when should the site be rotated? Is there a certain policy on this?

1) What are your views and/or opinions on overtime? Why do you think overtime continues to be a mainstay in nursing practice? 2) Do the benefits of overtime outweigh its risks? Or are the risks associated far greater? 3) What strategies could be implemented to address overtime issues and concerns? Are strategies that are currently being used reasonable? 4) In the collective agreement between SAHO and SUN, article 8.01 states: "Employees shall not be required to work overtime against their wishes except in emergency circumstances. An emergent circumstance shall be defined as a circumstance driven by an unforeseen and/or unpredictable influx of patients and/or unanticipated increase in care required to address patient well being." -Does this raise any issues or concerns? What are some other policies in place?

Hello everyone! I am a 3rd year nursing student. One of the requirements for our classes was to post a blog regarding an issue in nursing. My group chose the topic of overtime. Hello everyone! I am doing a blog entry for school and the topic is "overtime". I was just wondering what your thoughts were in regards to this subject. Should there be a cap on the amount of overtime a nurse works in a year? Is it appropriate for management to work short-staffed in order to avoid paying overtime? ( I work in a nursing home where we have 96 residents: 2 nurses on night shift...if one of the nurses calls in sick, and the shift cannot be replaced at regular time, instead of replacing the shift at overtime they call in a special care aide and the nurse is responsible for the entire facility) Is this appropriate?

I am an LPN and will be completing my RN BSN in 7 months. I became an LPN first b/c my daughter was small and the course was offered where I lived. Upon completion of the program I knew that I wanted to become an RN so pursued this idea part-time for 4 years and now am completing my 5th year fulltime. I can tell you from my experience that I wouldnt change the way I obtained my education. Simply b/c I am a hands on learner so being an LPN I was able to continue working as well as work on my classes. My classmates whom were not LPNs or had no prior experience in the field were offerered little time to practice any clinical skills as the focus is mainly theory. The down side of course is the extra cost associated with this option. I recommend this route if you are a hands on learner or if you are not sure if nursing is what you want to do.

I know ..its backwards..I am teaching grade 10's and their teacher suggested a topic for me..then we have an assignment associated with the teaching plan where you have to have a nursing diagnosis and interventions...it doesnt make sense why we are doing this..we should just have a teaching plan b/c we aren't the ones identifying the need

We all make mistakes in our nursing career...I have made med errors as well, although not serious ones, it makes you question your ability as a nurse. The important thing to understand is that just because you made an error doesnt mean you are a terrible nurse..it happens and when it does we learn from our mistakes. Your instructor was there for your guidance when you needed it and maybe should have looked into things a little deeper before giving you advice. Now if this medicine would have been a narcotic or one requiring closer monitoring, as a nurse you would have most likely yourself looked longer and harder. Med errors in nursing are inevitable and many factors contribute to why they happen. In a facility where I work the pharmacy mislabeled a hydromorphone vial as a morphine vial (it was actually the box they came in so the vials were correctly labeled) the nurse was in a hurry...meant to give the morphine but in actuality gave the hydromorphone (which we know is significantly stronger)...another time when I was in nursing school a fellow classmate and the instructor were preparing to give a pallaitive client morphine...they both double checked the dose before the student gave it...it wasnt until the next dose was due that the student realized they had given 10 times the prescribed dose! I am not trying to play down the importance or seriousness of medication errors, I just want you to know that it does happen and you just need to take responsibilty for it, learn from it and move on.
