  1. My rationale would be that when the patient is "sleepy" and not alert and oriented that they're more at risk hurting themselves by falling versus having a urinary retention that it can be easily managed with straight cath or foley?
  2. that's a really good point. Thank you so much :)
  3. She asked us which of the following list of anticholinergic side effects: constipation, dry mouth, blurred vision, postual hypotension, weight gain, and sedation -- is the most serious. I questioned her and asked why not sedation. And she vaguely explained that it's urinary retention because of toxins (which I conclude if the drug is not excreted, the levels of the drug will escalate). I thought anything that affects patient's breathing (which is sedation) should be more serious than urinary retention. I looked everywhere in our text to see if it did indicate that urinary retention is the most serious and so far I have not found it. Thank you so much everyone for the feedback! I appreciate it.
  4. Hi everyone, My question relates to which is the most serious anticholinergic side effects (in taking antipsychotics) between urirnary retention or sedation. My professor said urinary retention (which I can agree - risk of infection). But I think it's sedation because of what goes along with it ie. cns depression, bradycardia, depressed breathing. Any thoughts? I appreciate the help :) thanks!
  5. I look at my course objectives and plan what I'm going to be studying based on that. I read all of the assigned pages but concentrate more on the course objectives.
  6. This worked well with me, so I hope it helps you as well. 1. Never skimp on reading the textbook. There's no way getting around it. 2. Flashcards are your best friends 3. Easy on the caffeine. It increases anxieties even more 4. Don't get involve with classroom drama 5. Choose your study buddies wisely 6. Plan ahead and think about what you're going to study before you dive into your textbook and notes. 7. There's a reason why textbooks have accompanied CDs -- it never hurts to check it out 8. Read. 9. Don't underestimate the power of exercise -- take a 10 min break to workout 10. Give yourself some credit.. you know more than you think. Best of luck :)!
  7. I convertd the 80 kg to 176 lbs and plugged it in the problem 500 ml/250 mg x 1 mg/1000 mcg x 5 mcg/ kg * min x 1 kg/2.2 lbs x 176 lbs x 60 min/1 hr = 26400000/ 550000 = 48 ml/hr
  8. Thank you for the insight! Very helpful. Tomorrow is my 2nd week of nursing school and we're doing NG insertions, residuals measurement -- all the good stuff for clinical skills lab and was curious :)
  9. is 200 mL limit a standard? I read a book that saying that the limit is 400ml? And does the limit vary from patient weight? Does anyone know what procedure to follow if the residual measurement exceeds the standard limit? Does the residual affect the amount of formula we put in or do we just follow whatever the amount of order says as long as it stays within parameters? I'm a little confused with that part of the procedure. sorry for the questions :) Thanks for your help!
  10. 1. when is your start date? 9/22/2011 2. what state are you in? ca 3 program (lpn, adn, bsn)? adn 4. what is the one piece of advice you are holding onto right now? study hard...be humble...be a sponge... 5. who is your greatest motivation to complete nursing school? my two baby nephews (one from my younger sis and the other one from my younger brother). i want a good and stable future for them, finishing school will help me achieve that.
  11. I'm also starting nursing school in... 7 days.. So if anyone is entitled to freak out it will be me jk :) but really.. you shouldn't freak out. or worry... just make sure that your hubby will help out with the pets and makes sure you manage your time wisely and never bring money to clinicals so you don't get tempted to eat vending machine food. I'm trying to lose weight myself, so I made sure I have a schedule and so I can squeeze in at least 30 minutes to workout 3x a week. I'm actually blogging my weightloss journey and nursing school called nursing school diet at blogger. Best of luck! :)
  12. The dean in my nursing school mentioned this and she said that the really expensive ones like this electronic stethoscope isn't necessary because the medical professionals (ie. cardiologist) that use these types for (for the lack of a better word) "sound differentiation" will only confuse the untrained ears of a first year nursing student. But hey if you're getting it for free, why not. These electronic onces are like in $400s
  13. It's indicated in the problem that the bag has 250 mL per 200 mg infused in 4 hours. When I set up my solution. I always start with the ANSWER unit which is mL/hour. And conveniently the problem gives you 250 mL (goes on the top) and 200 mg/4 hours (goes on the bottom). This is how I set up my problem (250 mL/ 200 mg/ 4 hours) x (4.4 mg/ 1kg) x (1 kg/ 2.2 lbs) x (80 lbs) = 8800/1760 = 50mL/Hr All units crossed out except the answer units which is ml/Hr for rate of infusion.
  14. Just out of curiosity (only because I've been practicing DA with online questions like these, is the answer 50 mL/hr?
  15. (60 gtts/1mL)*(500mL/150 mg)*(1mg/1000mcg)*(1000mcg/1min) = 3,000,000/150,000 = 20 gtts/min I agree with SummitAp. I had to try the problem it's good practice :)
