Hello everyone. I had a quick question for the community. I have worked for a hospital for 7 months, part time (.6) in their ED. It's super busy but I love it. However, I've come to a crossroad in my life where I am running out of room/time to work at my part time schedule. I am currently a full time fire fighter in NYC, and my wife just got hired in a different hospital (she starts next week) in their ED. We also have a 1 year old child to care for, and my father with Alzheimer's disease lives with us, with no parents to baby sit. I want to continue to work as a nurse on the side along with my fire fighting career, but at a per diem rate if possible. I guess my question is, is it way too soon to ask my manager to go per diem? I have 1 1/2 experience in a nursing home before this job, so I'm new but not brand new. I am concerned about agrivating my manager, who is a nice woman. Honestly, she had mentioned in my hire interview she was worried about hiring me because "firemen tend to go to per diem quickly." In my case, it's true, but for valid reasons. She has per diem employees, one of which is also a fire fighter. I'm torn, and stressed over the scheduling of all this. Any advice is welcome. Thank you!

Hey, thankfully very much. That was an incredibly well explained answer to many of my concerns. I have a lot of respect for all nurses, and each role/job is very important. I am glad to know there is a good amount of learning possible in a nursing home/rehab setting. I just want to get out into the field, and maximize as much learning as I can, in whatever way is available to me.

Hey everyone, I just want to get some feedback, people's opinions, regarding a New RN grad (ASN Degree), working their first job in a Rehabilitation Center/Nursing home environment. - I have been told that these types of facilities are *NOT* regarded as experience when applying to another job, for example, in the hospital setting. The belief is that Rehab/Nursing homes are considered *SUB-Acute*, therefore, not *ACUTE* care experience. Maybe elsewhere in the USA this is not the case, but here in NYC, that is what I have been hearing all during my nursing school experience and all I hear while job hunting. - The major isssue then, if this is true, at least in NYC, RN's with an Associates Degree in nursing CANNOT get hired in hospitals. Everywhere you turn, its BSN only. I have various hooks in specific hospitals that said they can not help me until I get my BSN (which I am currently signing up for an online RN to BSN) In the meantime, nursing homes are the only real option for new grads with ASN. - Are these types of facilities worth perusing, even though they are not regarded as experience? Just to confirm, I am not KNOCKING these types of facilities (Although, I do work as a Medical First Responder, where we constantly go on runs to a nursing home, and last week three nurses were found doing chest compressions and CPR on a living person with a good pulse). I just want to know what other peoples opinions are of this setting, for learning and working. - Personally, I work full time as a Fire Fighter, and I want to supplement my life with a second part time career as a Nurse. Even with a Bachelors in English, Associates in Nursing, and 8 years experience as a Medical First Responder, nobody will hire me (or any of my classmates) until we have a BSN, unless you consider a Nursing home, Rehab center. The longer the wait, the less optimistic I get about getting in. Seems like a lot of people did well on the NLN. I will still hope for the best..I hope this ISH comes today!

No mail on my end. I wouldn't count on any mail today. It's only 12pm, but tomorrow or Saturday is more likely. My degree audit has not changed. I guess that was a false rummor, oh well. Lol. The letters definitely went out already? I havent called the nursing department at all.

As far as I know, he didn't use any letters of recommendation. I will ask him today and respond if I am wrong, but he never once mentioned that to me. It was actually other classmates in SCI 25 and BIO 11 & 12 that said they were going to try and get letters, that's where I got the idea from. I am thinking about calling the department and asking them, but honestly, they aren't really the nicest people all the time to deal with, in my experience. LoL, I have been told that once you actually get into the program, they are much nicer to you. Oh and a tidbit I read on other forms on allnurses.com, keep checking your degree audit. From what I have read, it will state that your major is nursing before you get the letter! Not 100% sure if that's true, but its worth looking at every now and again. Log onto ESims, and close to the bottom/middle of the page, click on degree audit. Your log in information is set as your Social Security Number as a user name, and your birthday as day, month, two digit year (012511 = today's date format) as the password, if you didn't know that already. Currently, mine still says "Undeclared Nursing", and I believe it will say just "Nursing" when accepted. Good luck all!

Oh, I forgot to ask everyone, did anybody utilize any letters of recommendation from professors and such? A few of my professors said they would write them for me, but I never pursued it, and I wonder if it would have helped. I feel stupid because usually every bit helps, but maybe KBCC Nursing doesn't care about letters of recommendation.

Yea, I was going to say the same thing. You have to take the NLN while at Kingsborough, and I believe that if you weren't enrolled in any clinical program at another school, you will have to take SCI 25, which would have to be done this semester to get into the Fall 2011 one. Its a required prereq for Kingsborough only. It prepares you pretty dam well for the NLN. That;s just what I think, so if your serious, go to M101 and speak to an adviser, because I could very well be totally wrong. Amanda Kalin is the best, but she is the head of the office, so it might be difficult to speak to her. Anyone there will be able to help. Good luck

Hey fellow prospective KBCC nursing students. Any new info on this topic? We are all waiting patiently, just wondering if anybody heard of an exact date or specific time frame for getting a letter. My NLN was a bit of a disappointment, a 121 with an 83 percentile, but I have a 3.8 GPA, so I know I am still in the running. I have a good friend who is on his last semester at KBCC who got a 129, and got into the program last year with no problems. My chances aren't great, but there is still a good reason to believe I will get in. I panicked at the NLN, and bombed the Math part. I got about half right, actually literally half. But I made up for it in the other two. Math was the only one I didn't finish, where I just put "C" for the last 10 questions. Science 25 I got a B+, and A's in BIO 11 and 12. If anyone knows more info, and wants to dash my hopes of getting in, please do. I just want to know either way already! Although getting into the program is pretty dam important to me. I am a guy, so I hope they don't have a small male quota that has already been filled:) Anyway, good luck to everyone, it would be nice if everyone could get in. Whoever does definitely earned it.
