Does/Can an RN give anesthetics before procedures such as skin biopsy, laser surgery,
I am a derm nurse in Michigan but just Googled your question and found this: If after receiving the appropriate training as indicated in Item 1, medical assistants are allowed to administer injections of scheduled drugs only if the dosage is verified and the injection is intramuscular, intradermal or subcutaneous. The supervising physician or podiatrist must be on the premises as required in section 2069 of the Business and Professions Code, except as provided in subdivision (a) of that section. However, this does not include the administration of any anesthetic agent. The MAs in our practice do not administer the local anesthesia.

I too am a MOHs nurse and inject local anesthesia (lidocaine and bupivacaine). We do not use IVs.

need advice-took nclex today!
I took my NCLEX today too. After the first five questions, I was wondering WHAT LANGUAGE this test was in! It shut down after 75 questions, but I'm telling you, I was comfortable with maybe 20 of those questions! I graduated at the top of my class, but I'm very worried. It seemed like NOTHING I had in class or studied was on that test! Everyone tells me that 75 questions is a good sign, but I also know it could mean GO BACK TO SCHOOL!!!

PS) I forgot, the passing score for the HFCC program is 80%.

Henry Ford Community College
Hello future HFCC nurses, I just graduated from HFCC in May and took my NCLEX today (state boards). All I can tell you is, yes, it is a tough tough program. I was in the class that started January 2005 and we went straight thru til this spring (about 18 months). It was pretty intense, and a considerable number of students didn't make it. I do recommend you knock off all your pre-reqs first. I know the program and pre-reqs have changed some since I started, so your best bet is contacting the nursing office or going on-line for the catalog. Let me know if you have any questions. I started my new job at U of M Hospital last week and won't be around much, but I'm always checking in! Good luck!

X-Post - I Must Be Misunderstanding This Schedule?!?
I am about to graduate from HFCC (this May). Don't be thrown off by the hours at school, you will be there PLENTY. In the beginning, especially, they build-in additional class hours and lab practices which are all mandatory. Unless there have been changes that I don't know about (and there very well could be), you are in class two days a week (for 3 hours at least) and clinicals two days a week (for about 6-8 hours each). It doesn't seem like a lot of time on paper, but if you add in the reading and homework and tests and the much-hated PAPERWORK, trust me, you are plenty busy. I don't work and I applaud anybody that can or has to because the program is tough. What are they saying the "wait" list is at right now?

Mature Nurses over 50
I will be 50 in January and will be graduating nursing school in May. I am not the oldest in my class; in fact, we have a guy in his 60s who's just starting out. For anyone thinking they're too old, I say that's bologna, go ahead and DO IT! I haven't been this happy in years and I'm loving every minute. I have wisdom and life experience on my side and I think the patients can appreciate that.

Class of 2007 Hopefuls / Just Getting Started?
Hello all. I will be a 2007 graduate too. I'm finishing my pre-reqs this year and I only have two classes left: A&P II and Microbiology. I'm 48 and have a great supportive husband and two daughters in their 20s and in college themselves. Kel, I'm a Michigan gal too. I'm attending Schoolcraft College in Livonia (outside of Detroit) and have been accepted into the actual nursing program for next year. Hope to get acquainted with all of you! Donna

Schoolcraft College Distance Psy
Are you getting a second degree? I already have a BA in journalism, and have applied to Wayne State and U of M's accelerated second degree programs. But I think I'll stay at Schoolcraft for the ADN instead. I'm 48 and really don't think I need another bachelor's at this point in my life. Good luck on your test tomorrow!

You must be taking the video class right now during summer session then? With Hoffmann? I don't know anything about him/her, so I'm not able to advise about tests. When it comes time for the child psyche class, however, I would definitely recommend the on-line version with Dr. Pilgrim. I thought it was incredibly easy and I liked working ahead if I wanted to. Have you been accepted into the nursing program yet? I start Fall 2005. Was hoping for this coming fall, but the waiting list was too long. It'll give me a whole year to knock-off Anatomy II and Microbiology though. Have you taken either of those yet?

I just took the Child Psychology class on-line this spring. It was great, I finished the whole class in under three weeks, as you can work at your own pace. I'll imagine the beginning psyche class is similar. My instructor (though I only saw her once) was Colleen Pilgrim, and I liked the way she structured the work. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Mature Nurses over 50
I'll be 50 when I graduate with my ADN. SO I'm hoping to find LOTS of nurses my age when I finally get out there! Good to hear that so many of you are still hanging in!

I'm currently on their waiting list and the school keeps telling me they have no idea if I'll get into the RN program this fall, this winter, or next fall. It's frustrating trying to make plans! Anybody going thru this like me? I'm accepted into the Fall 2005 Schoolcraft program, but if I can get into HFCC's THIS fall, I'd be thrilled.

Schoolcraft College
I attend Schoolcraft right now. There is a waiting list (at least for the ADN degree). I am finished with my pre-reqs, but can't start the nursing program until a year from now because of the waiting list. I will be 51 when I finally graduate, so I'm not real happy about having to sit around a whole year. But this is something I really want to do and Schoolcraft has an EXCELLENT program (not to mention it's less than a mile from my house!). I could go for the Nursing as a Second Career accelerated degree at Wayne State, but the thought of two more chem classes is too daunting. Besides, at 51, will I really need a BSN? Which brings up this question: How do you guys feel about waiting lists at the community college level? It's based solely on your finishing your pre-reqs and passing the NET. Other than maintaining a 2.5 gpa, grades don't count. This really sets me off because I have a perfect 4.0 gpa and it buys me nothing. I worked HARD for that 4.0 and I feel it should have been a consideration when I applied to the nursing school. Just a little whining at 9 a.m.....sorry about that! Anyway, if you're interested in Schoolcraft, just call their counseling center. I'm not sure about summer hours, but generally you can just walk-in and get an appt (but I would call first). Plus you can get much of the program information off their website, including a nursing application. Good luck everyone! Maybe we'll run into each other in a class someday! Donna Northville
