  1. MCG is on a hiring freeze from what I hear. Other hospitals in the area include University Hospital and Doctors Hospital. There's also the VA and Trinity. Good luck to you both!
  2. Hey Everyone, I'm currently living in Georgia and I'm about to graduate with my BSN in May. I'm looking into University of Colorado Hospital and it's my top choice for an RN Residency program. I know it's highly competitive but I was hoping that anyone who has applied or has participated in the program to shed some light for me. Any information on how they select applicants for the program, what the program entails, and your personal experience. Thanks! Christine
  3. Wow! Thank you all for the great responses! I'm just one of those people that like to have a plan! lol But God's gotta plan too so I guess I'll do my best in preparing and roll with it.
  4. Hey all, I've tried browsing allnurses before posting this but I cant seem to find answers. I graduate with my BSN in May and I was curious about when I need to start looking for jobs. I hear February but is January too early?? Any advice (or previous allnurses links to a similar topic) would be greatly appreciated. (I also live in Georgia so if anyone can shed some light on residencies/new grad - friendly hospitals, I'd be grateful for it!) Christine
  5. WOOOHOOO! Congrats everyone!
  6. Were yall hired on as PCTs? (Ps- thanks for all the great info!)
  7. Thank you two! Sunny, Did they have a link for the summer externship?? I stalked the website all spring waiting for something to pop up and never saw anything.
  8. Hey there, I'm curious if anyone has done the Grady externship offered in December. I'm pretty sure they send out a flyer in October for nursing students to go to an open house. I'd really like to more if anyone has any insight! Thanks!
  9. We actually didnt apply for early admission. I applied and found out in Feb that I was accepted. Im not sure when my roommate applied but she said it was for the normal admission too.
  10. Tizita, I just talked to my roommate and this is what she summarized her application to me: 3.6 GPA, she said her math/sci GPA was higher than that, 1250 SATs, she did job shadows and worked with a midwife in her office part time, and she also had some good recommendations. She said her essay was kind of generic (so was mine) but she said she really emphasized how excited she was about the program and becoming a nurse. As far as students in Athens/Augusta, its competitive obviously. Im not sure why they cut the students back in Augusta. Id always have a plan B when applying.
  11. Tizita, I just talked to my roommate who just started the program this summer and she said her essay was 1200 words! Mine was only a paragraph. I guess it really really varies! So I'm sure your length will be fine. :) The only reason I could think of 35 Augusta students is budget cuts but I really have no clue.
  12. Hmmm, Well I cant shed too much light on the actual program because Im not in it lol. I havent read up on allnurses CNL forums but I'm sure they will have the best advice or insight to the CNL pathway. I do know that you get your RN which is what hospitals want. I know alot of students from the class that graduated in December 2010 that were hired immediately. I think it really depends on your quality of work, grades, and I guess whatever the hospitals hiring process is. The program does go very fast so I can see where it would be hard to retain all the information. Sorry I dont know much! I just thought it would be an option :)
  13. Kara, For most of nursing school at MCG Augusta, you will have class Monday and Friday. Times for class will very but I'd average it from 8-2pm of class. Tues, Wed, and Thurs will be clinical days. They vary alot depending on what clinical rotation your in. All clinicals are 7-8hrs long. As far as work goes, I work as a PCT at Emory every other weekend and it's not bad at all. Im not a brainiac, I HAVE to study. So juggling study time, work, social life, and clinical paper work is tough but absolutely manageable. Also, MCG and University (another hospital here) have PCT/work programs for nursing students (MCG and ASU students can participate in this). Bascially you work an 8hr shift every week as a PCT and the pay is around 10$ an hr. So that could be a work option for you.
  14. Hey kara! I made mostly As in my math and sciences so I tried to up play that in my application/resume (since my SATs werent that great). My friend goes to Brenau and loves it. But I agree with you, tuition is an issue.
  15. Karamarie, Northeast GA does shadowing that doesnt have crazy requirements. (at least it didnt 2 yrs ago when I did mine). Maybe something to look into! :)
  16. Lizyun, have you heard of the CNL program? It's for people who have their degree in another subject. The program is a yr and a half and you graduate with your masters in science and can take the NCLEX. I dont know the specifics of the program but I think it's something you could look into.
  17. Hey! Well, I'm not sure about ACT scoring. All I know is my SATs were very normal and nothing impressive. So Im guessing they look at all aspects of your application and decide. My SATs were average but I had a good GPA and experience. So, your GPA, work, and volunteering seem great (even if your ACT is as high as youd want) What about your math/science class grades? If your ACT is a little low, you could always redeem yourself with good math/science prereq grades. Augusta campus is great for Adults/Med-Surg clinicals (because MCG and Grady are the ONLY level 1 trauma hospitals in the state). Also, Augusta has a more medical community which is nice. Athens campus probably has a better children/peds clinical rotation because they go to CHOA (its a long drive though!). Also, since it's in Athens, it's more of a college town and they have the Dawgs! Of course I'm biased to Augusta :) but I'm sure Athens is great too. Another thing, Augusta only accepted 35 students this year, I think Athens was 50. Very competitive. For my essay, I wrote 1 good paragraph. I cant exactly remember what it said. when are you planning to apply? I can send my application essay (in a private message) to whoever wants to see it or get any ideas from it. I wouldnt advice copying it! My essay is on a separate computer that I wont have access to until the weekend, but Id love to share it with anyone.
  18. Hey Everyone! I'm currently a senior at MCG - Augusta. If you guys have any questions, I hope I can answer them. I LOVE MCG! It's the best decision I made in my college career. As far as application process goes, they do like high GPAs and any experience/volunteering/work related stuff. For our class, I believe the lowest GPA was in 3.5 (I dont know of anyone in Augusta who had lower). Also, the Athens campus is usually harder to get into because so many people apply there. I applied to the Athens campus (with a 3.71, experience, but my SATs were 490 reading and 510 math), I was not accepted in Athens but was asked to go to the Augusta campus. It's been wonderful. I'm from the Gainesville region of GA and applied and was accepted to many different nursing schools. I chose MCG (although 3 hrs away from home) because of the reputation and great clinicals. The professors are also helpful and knowledgeable. I hope I've shed some insight! Best of luck to all of you!
  19. PS- altogether, how much did you pay? I know its about 250 a week + 150application fee. But is there any other fees we will need to consider? (plane, food, buses, tuition for schooling?)
  20. Thanks for the super fast reply! How was your host family? Was it only 1 student to 1 host family, or did more than 1 student stay with a family?
  21. Hey All! I'm late on this post but I was hoping to travel and do some medical spanish. Pop-Wuj was one of the first sites I looked into. I'm living in Georgia, so I'm curious about flights. Were there students from across the country? Was setting up the flight and airport pickup easy? I'm seriously looking into this, but my parents are concerned about safety. Can you shed any light?
  22. Hey Everyone, I was curious about those who have gone on a Spanish Immersion trip, medical Spanish trips or basically anything where you learn medical Spanish abroad. I have looked up a couple sites that are very interesting and I'm definitely wanting to try but, I'd like some insight from others! So if anyone has any experiences they want to share please do! Christine
  23. Did any of you end up going on the trip? If so, write about your experience! I'd love to read about it! Did it help with medical spanish or just conversational spanish? thanks!
  24. So funny! Well, working in the ER this is a conversation I overheard with a patient and another nurse: Pt: My throats sore.. RN: I know, we're gonna get a swab of your throat to see if we can help you out and get you better Pt: Dont I get an xray? RN: No, we're gonna do this throat swab first. Pt: Man I hate this hospital! It was funny. But, I think it goes to show how important patient education is these days!
  25. I'm a few years late seeing this thread! But, I also looked into Pop-Wuj. I've emailed the director of the Medical spanish language course and asked her a few questions which she did answer but not into much detail. I'm very interested in the program and I wanted to know more about your experience.. Did you have your classes and clinicals with the other American students? Also, how were arrangements at the airport? (Most importantly,) Do you feel more confident speaking to Hispanics using medical spanish?
