  1. Thank you for this post. I find this field highly intriguing as well. Have you considered an MPH degree from a school that offers a behavioral or mental health concencentration? For example, I'm aware that the University of South Florida offers an MPH in Behavioral Health and the University of Florida offers a graduate certificate in Psychiatric Epidemiology (approx. 15 credits or so). I'm sure there are other MPH programs where you could customize a concentration in mental health. I'm currently looking at starting an online MPH soon, but haven't found an online program that offers this concentration.
  2. I was recently offered a PHN position at a county health dept. and am very excited and honored to have this opportunity. I have been a med/surg nurse for 18 mos out of nursing school. My only concern is that if I leave the bedside at this point, will I be able to return in the future if need be? I'm wandering if there are nurses out there who have gone from bedside to non-bedside and back again.
  3. I recently completed a year of med/surg at an acute hospital, now trying to find a job in psych, which is what I've always wanted to do. When finishing nursing school, numerous people told me to get some m/s experience first, which is what I did. Now, I seem to be hitting some roadblocks transitioning to psych. Many job postings in my area say at least one year of psych experience is required. So, this goes back to the ages-old dilemna of how does one get experience with no experience? I've thought about going for a PRN position first, but honestly I don't think I can handle a PRN gig in addition to my full-time job. The unit I work on is pretty tiring at times and I need all of my days off to recharge. For those of you who started in m/s, how did you transition to psych? Did you find your first gig through job postings, or was it from someone you knew. Appreicate any tips you might have.
  4. I'm a new grad RN on month 3 on a med/surg floor. People tell me I'm doing a good job and that I'm "where I'm supposed to be," but I've been struggling with anxiety. The worst is the night before a day shift or the afternoon before coming into night shift. I worry about a lot of things, what will happen to me during the shift? what will my coworkers do to me or think about me?, etc. When I'm on the floor things are so busy that sometimes I can't even think about being anxious, but it always feels like a race against the clock when I'm on the floor, which feels unsettling. So, my question is, what things do you do to cope with fear and anxiety in relation to your job? Thanks in advance for replies.
  5. Hi, I'm a BSN student tasked with a group in-service presentation to the unit staff on a cardiac stepdown unit. We're struggling to find a topic to present on. Any ideas? As a cardiac nurse, what are some topics that you'd be interested in hearing about? What are some topics you have wondered about recently with pt. scenarios? We're hoping to find a topic that shouldn't be too difficult to find in the literature, as our deadline is approaching. Appreciate any thoughts/ideas!
  6. Hi, My classmate and I are tasked with presenting a teaching project/activity to pts. on an inpatient psych unit. We were thinking of presenting something on creative writing or journaling to help deal with emotions, etc. Any suggestions on specific writing activities to include, or what not to include? Anyone have experience with presenting on a similar topic? Would also appreciate other topics to present for psych pts. Thanks!
