Career move advice please!!
Hello! I have been a LPN for about 6 months on the medical unit at the ONLY hospital in the town I live in. I feel quite overwhelmed most of the time. I enjoy nursing, but I feel that I am not providing very good nursing care because I am SO busy running from room to room. I have recently been seriously considering trying to get a job at a Dr office. I have a husband and 2 young children (ages 3 and 6). I think that the hours of Mon-Fri, 8-5 would be nice for me and my family and I might have a little energy left at the end of the day, instead of being completely drained! I am sure that office nurses are busy, but I imagine that it might be a little less stressful. I pay would be less, but not much (about $1 per hour). I am nervous about "losing" my hospital skills because I don't know if I would want to work in an office forever (maybe while my chilldren are young). I am also worried that if I miss hospital nursing, I would not be able to go back to the hospital because I currently have a contract with them and even if I pay them back, I doubt that they would re-hire me. Another problem I have is I that I don't know how I would be able to go back to school to become a RN if I am working at an office. Right now I plan to start working Fri, Sat, and Sun and go to school Mon-Thu. It is important for me to become a RN, but like I said, I am overwhelmed right now. I know this is a choice that only I can make, but some insight would be great. Opinions please..... Thank you for taking the time to read my post!

carotid pulse?
You guessed correctly! I never really thought of checking them during a general assessment if the radial and pedal pulses were strong.

carotid pulse?
Thanks! These reasons are good. I may need to ask my intstructor exactly what she was thinking, but at least I'll have some ideas! Anjie

carotid pulse?
i guess i didn't think of the cpr one because i am doing a project that includes an assessment. she might be looking for abc's, but i am not sure. here is the project...... black~ assessment questios green~ what i wrote red~ what my instrutor wrote pulses: rate/quality/site (if pulse point is omitted state why) r: radial pulse~ 72, normal dorsalis pedis ~ 72 , normal. radial it is unnecessary to check all pulse sites if the radial and dorsalis pedis sites are easily felt (you could have a reason to check the carotid along with radial and pedal) thanks!

carotid pulse?
Hello everyone! I haven't posted in a while but I have a question ( I am always lurking, but usually don't post!). I am doing a project for school (almost done...graduate Jan 12th ) and I can't think of the reasons or which situations would call for checking a carotid pulse. I know you don't check every pulse point during every assessment, and I am having a little trouble determining when you WOULD check the pulses that you usually don't. I hope that makes sense! I feel a little silly for asking, but oh well! Thanks is advance. Anjie P.S. I LOVE this board, it is full of such great infomation!

Elective surgery in your hospital?
Why am I overweight? Well, I have been overweight all of my life. Not sure when exactly my issues began, but I didn't even realize it was a problem until highschool. I began my attempts to lose weight when I was around 18 years old. It is a struggle for me now just not at gain weight. My main issue is portion control, because I usually make pretty good food choices(not always, but I try). I think the surgery will help me control my portions and lose weight, which will in turn make it easier to exercise. I realize that "maybe" I could be this without the surgery, but I have yet to do so (after trying just about everything). This surgery has worked for MANY people like me and I am will to try anything at this point. I am very ready for this change. This is hard to explain and I am sure it is difficult to understand for someone who has not had a problem with their weight... Angie

Elective surgery in your hospital?
I have been researching GBS for about a year. I know that it is risky and that in the end, I still have to make the changes. The surgery will be a very powerful tool in my weight loss, but I still have to work at it! I do appreciate the advice and encouragment. I am very excited about this possibility. I just hope that I will be approved by my insurance company. Although I qualify by the amount of weight I need to lose, my weight loss attempts have not been MD supervised. I guess I will just have to "weight" and see. hehehe :) Thanks again! Angie

Elective surgery in your hospital?
Thanks! I think it will be worth it, I'm just a little nervous(well, I am nervous about alot of aspects of the surgery, but having it at "my" hospital is kind of weird. Guess that should be the last of my worries!) Angie

Elective surgery in your hospital?
Hi everyone. My health insurance just began to cover gastric bypass surgery and I am strongly considering it. The problem is that I live in a pretty small city and the insurance doesn't cover the surgery "out-of-network", which means I would have to have the procudure done at the hospital I work at (on the floor I want to work on in the future!) I am a pretty private person, and this makes me a bit uneasy. Anyone have any experience or advice? Thanks! LPN2BE2005

Passing time
Hi everyone! I am in a program with a local hospital. This program pays for me to become an LPN, and I am very thankful for it...however...I am going crazy! We are out of school for the summer and they are using our group (8 of us) to do 1-on-1's. 12 hrs (night shift) of just sitting in a room is very frustrating! It's hard to stay awake. I would must rather be running around and busy, at least time would go by faster! So, anyway...any ideas on how to pass time? I have already studied, studied, studied! Looking at my books makes kind of sleepy anyway! Maybe there is not much advice for me, I just wanted to whine a little bit :) . Thanks for listening!
