Oh, and PS, I had to send out every PM one at a time, with a minute between each...making it quite likely I forgot someone, so please don't hesitate to let me know if I missed you! I have a little over half of the posters, so I'll wait another day and send the list out.

May 2011 NAU accelerated nursing program hopefuls!
Hey hey, I had to take a little break from thinking/writing/obsessing about nursing since I was literally losing sleep over it. I feel much better now, haha :) Thanks to all pulling for me...it's great to have the support! A few things: -I asked about tuition, and apparently they don't give out exact numbers just in case they're inaccurate, so you just have to go to bursars website and figure it out...don't forget the extra $1600. For an out of stater, I think it's going to run me about $25,000 for tuition, then I'm figuring about $15,000 for living expenses (I can be pretty cheap, haha) -As far as scholarships go, I was advised to still apply for scholarships (due Mar 1st), but for accelerated students the date is "not completely concrete." -An idea: I'm planning on being in Flagstaff to visit some of my boyfriends friends, and my friends in phoenix March 15-20th. Even though my admission is still on the fence, I'd still like to meet you guys! So maybe we can plan a weekend for those who are a driveable distance, or live in flag...cocktail/coffee hour or something. Also, I was thinking maybe we can get in touch with either some past students or an advisor to have some group Q&A maybe on that Friday the 18th (I'll know my admission status by then...or so they tell me) for our billions of questions! Shoot me a PM, or let me know if I need to PM you, and let me know if you're interested or have any other ideas, and I'll give you my email.

What would you have done differently in school to help get hired?
This is great! Thanks to everyone for your input! (and keep it comin'!) Unfortunately, working during an accelerated program is highly discouraged due to the fast pace and rigorous coursework, but I plan on volunteering on weekends because many hospitals only require a 4-hr/week commitment, which is definitely doable! I have my EMT (and ACLS), but many places don't allow an EMT certification to substitute for a CNA certification, but shoot, with or without certification, I'll change beds and take vitals like it's my job (Oh. wait...) @Catch, I actually already have a degree, I'm just going back to school to do something I'm passionate about (just like thousands of others, I know). I'm kinda diving in and hoping for the best... @llg, what fantastic information...thank you!! I bet you get asked what the magical key to getting hired is all the time, so I appreciate your response! Good luck to everyone in their job hunt, and may the hiring gods be kind to you!

What would you have done differently in school to help get hired?
I'm on a waiting list for an accelerated nursing program, and while I'm nervously waiting, I'm curious as to how to up my chances of getting hired as a new grad (hopefully) in a year. For all of you new grads searching for jobs, is there something you wish you would have done in school to up your chances of landing a job? (eg volunteer, network, go to more job fairs, get better grades, write down contacts/things learned from clinicals, etc)

Thanks nomad, I'm sure you'll make it! I was nervous when ab didn't get in, so I know the feeling! Not to sound self-absorbed, but I'm kinda befuddled as to why I didn't make it too...I already have my EMT, ACLS, BLS, CPR, and experience working in an ER, my recs were great (both gave me a copy, haha), volunteer experience, work experience, so I'm just kinda like what the hell. 4th isn't bad though, I just wish I could join in on the housing and planning discussion! Which... I'll stop hijacking the thread with my pity party and let you guys celebrate!!

Thanks for the encouragement guys, I kinda needed it. I totally jinxed myself with the previous post, so it's like, half my fault, haha. Wait list is better than no list, but for now I'm diving straight into plan B. Which may or may not come to fruition in the next 2 and a half weeks (I know my admission status for sure after march 11th apparently), sooooooooo, wait wait wait. Sigh. Let countdown number TWO begin! And really, congrats to all that have made it!!

May 2011 NAU accelerated nursing program hopefuls!
I don't know what everyone is thinking, and Im getting way ahead of myself since mail has yet to come today and I STILL don't know if I'm accepted, BUT if I am, I wouldn't mind maybe trying to live with another ABSN student...I can't afford my own place, but I don't want to get stuck with strangers who are loud and partiers, ya know? Just a thought. Oh and if I end up living with a classmate, I'm a well seasoned winter driver, so that's a bonus if carpooling is involved :)

Life, nice creds! If you don't get in, something is wrong with their scoring, haha. I have 2 major bio's IP, and I'm nervous about that too. If mail hasn't gotten to Tucson yet, then I wonder if I'll have to wait until wednesday...yuck. Am I the only out of stater on here? Let's hope they consider that :)

May 2011 NAU accelerated nursing program hopefuls!
Life, I'm glad we can share the pain. The wait is KILLING me! I'm visiting my man this weekend and my bday is tomorrow, so I'm good and distracted, which is great...although I'm constantly checking here on my phone and talking about school, which I think is getting old to the folks around me, hahaha. Tuesday will be a looooong afternoon at work! And Congrats to all who have gotten in so far, how exciting! I assume everyone who has posted is accepting their offer?

This is why I hate having internet access on my phone. Ahhhhh...Montana, behind on EVERYthing, haha. Tuesday is the day for me apparently. Congrats on all who got in, and ab, shoot, my heart sunk when I read that And to all who haven't heard...WHY is this weekend a federal holiday!?
-

Ahhhh! I love it! Congrats! Dang the holiday, that means I won't get my decision until Tuesday at the earliest in MT. Congrats Congrats Congrats to you!!

Not too much longer now! Ab, don't worry about the info, I'm not a person to count my chickens before they hatch :) Street, perhaps your insider knows exactly when decisions will be mailed out? Tuesday the 22nd? I hope we all get in, seeing people not be accepted (including myself, ha!) is so disheartening!

I thought so. Good to know for sure though. Thanks NAU...TEASE!

May 2011 NAU accelerated nursing program hopefuls!
Uhh. I just got a call from NAU congratulating me on my acceptance to the summer 2011 term. Didn't mention anything about nursing, so I'm assuming it's just for the school as a whole, not nursing. Anyone else get a similar call? I kinda think I may have filled out the wrong NAU application (the general application). Hmmmm...

Oh good lord. That's so soon! And the day after my bday. Let's hope my 24th year starts out with a big fat envelope in the mail. I have 2 IP's as well...but mine are a bit more crucial (I wonder if that matters)--A&P I (I took the series backwards), and Microbiology...both of which I have like 97's in after the first exams...I sooo wish I could tell them that right about now...

May 2011 NAU accelerated nursing program hopefuls!
Well, quick responses on my part are due to sitting in the library waiting for my micro lab, and feeling a bit unmotivated to work ahead of what's due in the next few days... And yes ab, your life experience reaches far beyond my 24 year old life bubble :) but again, the wonderful part of accelerated programs is the diversity of people it attracts...and therefore the abundance of knowledge and experience we have to share with others. Man I hope we all get in...I want to meet everyone! Well, and especially since I've already gone ahead and shared my life stories with complete strangers...Haha! Ah well...

May 2011 NAU accelerated nursing program hopefuls!
Ab, I'm in the same boat as you as far as knowing where I want to go, but as far as what I want to do with an BSN, I couldn't be more different! I considered a few other schools, but decided to only apply for NAU. If I don't make it, then i'll devise a plan B if I need to cross that bridge. I've been thinking a lot about being an RN, and to get the jobs I really want (mostly research or administrative positions), the bsn is not the end of the schooling road for me. The part that makes it difficult is not only new grad job scarcity, but the fact that my boyfriend and I have been doing the distance thing for 8 months, and with an NAU acceptance, it'll be a total of at least 2 years living states away while he finishes his masters in CO and me (hopefully) in AZ. We're both very driven academically, so at our age we both value our education over our relationship...but gd It's a pain in the add living so far away! Now I bring this up because I know the accelerated program attracts so many different people with very different backgrounds, experiences and situations, and it seems to be a great option for people wanting a quick bsn as a gateway to other academic endeavors. For me, I'd love to continue my education after the bsn, but personal situations might postpone that a few years. What is everyone else planning on specializing in, or continuing with?

May 2011 NAU accelerated nursing program hopefuls!
Welcome life and zhong! @ life, thanks for the confirmation! May the waiting process be kind to you! Also, as a topic I'd love to hear opinions on...do you think there is an actual nursing shortage? As I've perused around this site, I see that MANY new grad are having trouble finding work. As the recession continues, older nurses are choosing not to retire, and part time folks are going full time for various reasons. Also training new grad is extremely expensive (they're basically paying 2 people for 1 job), and not to mention risky (no guarantee you'll stay long after your contract is up), so 2 years seems to be the magical number for required experience. I'm personally hoping the economy picks up in a year, and in the meantime I may as well focus on school. Anyone else have thoughts on this? And zhong...I think most of our entrance credentials are in the previous pages if ya go back and check 'em out...

NAU accelerated Nursing 2010
For those of you folks still posting who are in the program now, if you don't mind my asking, how much did tuition cost you for out of state? And besides the hrsa and rwj scholarships, are there any others that nau offers?
-
May 2011 NAU accelerated nursing program hopefuls!
Has anyone got a definitive answer on how much out of state tuition would be? I might dig up the 2010 thread and see if anyone responds...
