  1. Hello everyone! I have an interview for the University of Utah's DNP program this week! Any advice? I'm a horrible interviewer! I get so nervous, and in my own head! Thanks a lot! :)
  2. I did it at the VA. I hated it. We had one RN who was the charge nurse, they did the admits, discharges, assessments, and dressing changes for 20 patients. If it was the day or evening shift there was a LPN to pass medications. Also if it was the day or evening shift there would be 1 CNA and the rest of the RN's would work as CNA's on the floor. On NOC shift there was one RN and one CNA for 20 patients. For me it was unsafe, and a waste of talent and money for the RN's who were working the floor. They were not allowed to help with the "charge nurse" role.
  3. Thank you everyone! I am going start looking at my options. It was what I really needed to hear!
  4. I feel like I am losing my mind, some advice would be awesome! In August, I moved 800 miles away, for my first full-time nursing job. It was not my ideal job, but it took me over a year to find it. It was also a great opportunity to gain some great nursing skills, however, I have plateaued in my learning. I work at the VA hospital on an interim care unit (still really haven't figured out what that means). I hate my job. I work from 2330-0830 5 days a week. I feel like I live at work. I was hired for day shift, but was immediately placed on midnights. My immune system is not liking working midnights. I have never been so sick in my life. I also feel like I am a babysitter most nights and losing my nursing skills. My managers are horrible as well. My schedule is always posted late. It's like pulling teeth out of them to get days off, because they don't want to cover my shift. They yell at staff in the hallway in front of patients over NOTHING. They have nothing nice to say about staff, we cannot do anything right. Morale is at an all-time low. Everyone is looking for a way out. I think I might be next. I only have 1 year experience as an RN, and not sure what opportunities are available to me. My family thinks I need to just stick it out. I don't know if I can. They also think it would be stupid to leave a government job, but I am to the point where the benefits aren't worth it anymore. Any advice on how to enjoy my current job more, or is it time to move on?
  5. I agree with all of you. I just did not know who to show when I was the only licensed person working besides the MD. The MD saw it happened. I took it as a learning experience, I have good news to report, today I received my first hospital RN job. Its a neuro rehab floor. I love neuro and can't wait for in place policies and procedures. Plus a union to back me up!
  6. Hi. I was just fired from my first RN job today. I worked at an urgent care clinic for 3 months. I had 2 days of training with a LPN when I started. When working I am the only nurse on staff. Last week the MD ordered 10mg of morphine IM. I went to draw it up (first time IM and first time outside of nursing school). I added air to the vial before drawing it up. The end blew off across the room and the morphine went with it. I got another vial a drew it up without adding air and had no problem. I documented as giving 10 mg and wasting 10 mg in the narc book. I gave the pt his morphine. I thought all was well. Well apparently I had to show the "exploded" morphine vial to someone, which no one informed me of wasting policies. Plus who do you show your narcs to when you are the only Nurse working? An I too close to the situation and make a Huge mistake that I should be fired for? Does it get better? Any advice? I feel like a failure....
