  1. I hope so Olivia and that's what I'm planning to do, get my BSN while working. Hopefully it'll work out. It's just discouraging to see "BSN required" on many hospital websites.
  2. And I didnt know that about ADN BSN students? I thought BSN students would also have clinicals as soon as they take nursing classes?
  3. The passing rate from suffolk is actually one of the highest in NYS so I am confident that this is a good program. I mean I guess it's true I can always continue to get my BSN which I planned to do anyway. But seeing "BSN required" on many hospital websites is just plain discouraging.
  4. Hi everyone, I am currently enrolled in an ADN program in a community college. I love it, I love my instructors, the college, the clinical sites as well. But I cant help but starting to think that it was a mistake not applying to Stony Brook BSN program or any other programs. Originally I wanted to get my BSN from Stony Brook so I've looked up all the classes that I need, I have taken almost all the pre-reqs except for chemistry and group dynamics. But in November 2010 I figured I would apply to my CC's nursing program just for the hell of it, not thinking that I was going to get in at all. I didnt hear from them for a while and my peers started to get rejection letters so I thought that I would be on the same boat. However, to my surprise in mid April i received a phone call from my CC's nursing program that i made the cut. I was so happy I could not stop screaming "YES O MY GOD" I think that I possibly caused deafness for the person on the other end of the line. Now that I am in, I enjoy the program but I have this fear of not being able to get a job at all after I graduate. Money is a huge problem for me. Sometimes I fear that I am going to waste my time working toward my Associate's. Anyone feel the same way?
  5. Hi Laur! I am currently enrolled in the Ammerman nursing program. I love it! I recommend applying to the Ammerman campus instead of Grant as they have more clinical sites than Grant. That way you can gain more experience in different clinical settings and have a variety to choose from. I got in with a 3.5 GPA, Pi Sigma Alpha, Phi Theta Kappa, certified EMT, cancer research from Stony Brook University, and the honors program from SCCC. Required classes are BIO 130,BIO 132, PSY 101, ENG 101 I took many other classes that can be applied toward my BSN as well like statistics, biomedical ethics, health concepts etc.. I used the SBU nursing website. If you are looking for a boost in your application you should check out the BIOPrep program. It is a great experience and it really helps you go through Microbiology. In fact this program is so good it will make Micro seem like a piece of cake. The load of work you are responsible for is also massive so it will orient you for nursing school (yes unfortunately once you are in the nursing program you can no longer have a life. haha) and if you qualify the stipend is pretty nice to. http://www.stonybrook.edu/cesame/students/BioPREP/BioPREP.shtml I would also recommend taking the emergency medical care I class. and other relevant classes such as developmental psych, biomedical ethics, health concept etc. that can apply toward your BSN. All these classes help you tremendously especially the emergency medical care. The reason why i highly recommend this class is because it is a great class to orient yourself with the types of tests you will be getting in nursing classes. It is not knowledge questions like A&P tests. They really make you think, and you need to UNDERSTAND not memorize in order to pass nursing tests. The emerg medical care is a great way to familiarize yourself with this concept and help you develop your "nursing logic." The Emergency Medical Care class also certifies you to be an EMT.
  6. When I applied in Nov 2010 I took Standard freshman comp honors: B+ A&P 1 &2 - B+ Micro - A Psych honors - B Sociology honors- B But I also took a bunch of other courses like dev. psych, human ecology, stats, algebra, pre-calc, emergency medical care, health concepts, biomedical ethics, etc.. I got in with a 3.5 Phi Theta Kappa, Pi Sigma Alpha, cancer research program from stony brook university, certified EMT and the honors program in sccc. But I know many people who got in without micro and are still short of few classes, most of them have previous bachelors or associate degrees but not all. If you dont have a C you absolutely have a chance. Just apply early. Actually November is probably the perfect time to apply. I highly recommend you take the Emergency Medical Care class, it isn't mandatory but it has helped me tremendously so far (in fundamentals of nursing)! Another friend of mine who is currently a student in SBU BSN program also took the Emergency Medical Care program and he said that it was very helpful.
