Expired Children's Tylenol!
Hey everyone! I have had mixed responses on expired children's liquid tylenol (ages 2-11). Some responses state no problems, just may not be as potent. While others state medication may become toxic. I get this call from moms sometimes! What do you guys know? Thanks!

Not Cleaning Site?
Hi guys! I have a question? I had a fellow nursing friend who approached me with this scenario? In an outpatient clinic a patient received a PIV in her hand. The nurse who inserted the IV forgot to clean the site prior to IV insertion. The catheter stayed in for approximately 3 hours! What do you think this patient's risk would be?

Fingersticks and Gauze?
Thank you all so much...I am a newer nurse and I was basically wondering because of opening the skin when the needle punctures the skin...which posed the question for me...should this be sterile because the skin is broken? Thanks!

Fingersticks and Gauze?
Should sterile gauze be used with finger sticks or is non-sterile ok?

does this go away
I know exactly how you feel! I worked in a hospital 8 months on a busy surgical unit, I felt like that everyday when I got home....I would worry, worry, worry! I think it is because we know how much responsibility we have on our shoulders. I have heard that most nurses feel this way and it gets better with time and experience. For me personally, I have always worried about stuff more than others...I didn't think it would get better. I now work in a health department and LOVE IT! The patients aren't so acutely ill and the go home! I have done so much better with leaving work at work, I could never do that at the hospital! Please don't think I am trying to make you do what I did but I just want you to know that there are other options if it doesn't get better! Good Luck!

IM injections!
Hi guys! I have began having to give a lot of IM injections, I am now giving Depo and vaccines. The other day when I gave an IM injection in a patient's deltoid I could feel that the needle wasn't advancing as easily and she said "Ouch, I think you hit a nerve", this has never happened to me before? Can the nurse feel when he/she hits a nerve? Or could it possibly be a tendon or something? This patient was very thin so I tried not to advance it as far as I would have a heavier patient but I wanted to make sure that I advanced it far enough that it would get into the muscle well. Any advice and/or information would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Do you enjoy being a school nurse?
So what do you do when a child comes in with wheezing or something that you believe requires further care? Call the parents and tell them to take them to the doctor or call the ambulance? Are you able to give the child any treatments? Just wondering what type of plan you have to take?

Accordion Drains
Hey Guys, So I had a patient the other day with an accordian drain suctioning an abcess on his appendix and I have a question? After I flush the drain, I am supposed to reconnect the drain tubing I was told, and then to compress the accordian after I had connected everything, to form suction. So what happens to the air that was in the bag before I compressed the accordion after I hooked it all back up? I am just so curious? Thanks yall! P.S. I think this drain is pretty cool since it's like a "closed system"!

IV Flushes
Hey Guys, This is most likely the craziest question ever, haha? So today I was flushing my patient's IV and after I had finished flushing I decided to check for blood return (which I normally do before I flush) but for some reason this time I didn't, there was no blood return. So you know when you pull back on a plunger after it is on the patient's IV it has suction and if you don't get any blood return there is that empty space in the syringe that snaps back when you let it go because of suction....what is in that empty space before it snaps back? Anyway, I thought DID I JUST PUSH AIR IN MY PATIENT???? Then I thought no you can't pull air out of your patient, so you can't push it back in, calm down! So I still want to know what would you consider that empty space you see? What's in there??? I'm such a geek, I know! Thanks
