Hi! Thank you for your feedback. I totally understand them not hiring diploma nurses. I am anxious to start my BSN program in the fall. I only have 6 months experience in nursing currently. I would like to have at least one year before I apply anywhere else. What area pd CHP do you work? What is the nurse to patient ratios? Thanks!

Hello Nurses, Im doing research into hospitals around the Baltimore and Pittsburgh area regarding pediatric oncology and job opportunities. I am a recent diploma graduate, currently working as a peds RN in PA and going for my BSN next fall. I want to specialize in pediatric oncology. Of course John's hopkins automatically comes to mind. What are your experiences with working there? Any insight would be beneficial. I am not interested in making the top dollar, more so in research opportunities and experiences. My ultimate goal is to become a Nurse Researcher specializing again in Pediatrics. I have also been looking into Childrens Hospital in Pittsburgh. Any insight into the job culture, pay, and research opportunities here would be great too. Thanks!

Thank you! Good to know there are different options regarding amount of time on-call. I feel like that is my biggest deterrent.

I use to get panic attacks all the time, too. I ended up getting on medicine that helped, but i also took some advice from one of my instructors who said "When your in the room, think clinically first, then emotionally." THis single piece of advice has helped me many times to ward of an attack. Good luck and know your not alone!

Hello! I am going to graduate in May from a diploma program. After HR spoke with our class recently I have alot of questions about where/what I want my first job to be. My plan when I started school was to become certified nurse midwife and I was thinking it would be advantageous to work in OB for awhile just to gain insight and experience. Now, I am reluctant to pursue this after realizing 1) the amount of schooling involved( did I wait too long to start?) 2) the amount of dedication required(I have 2 children, one with special needs and a husband that works 2 weeks away from home) I am passionate about women's health and think about becoming a NP in that field also. I guess my main concern is whether someone like me could handle the responsibility/dedication/commitment it takes. So, my question(s) is/are: What do folks think about jumping into a specialty like OB right away, vs doing med-surg for a year or two?( there is an opening at the hospital where I go to school and they are willing to accept new grads) Is anyone familiar with working with midwives in the hospital setting, and if so could you shed some light on your experience? For the practicing midwives out there, could you offer any advice to someone in my situation? Older student, with family, etc. How do you balance home and work life? Also, I was thinking of shadowing one of the CNM's in my area...thoughts? Thanks everyone! And to those who are graduating in May...We're almost there!!

I agree that writing my own would imprint the material better. I often write snd rewrite my notes because it helps me to understand. I do feel that I put a lot of time into my studying and learning, not to mention taking care of my family, and was just looking for a little break...

I'm looking for suggestions for med cards I Can carry to clinical. Are some better than others? I'm looking for time saving techniques.. Which is why im not making my own. I have the Davis drug guide and was thinking of the companion cards that go along with it but it sounds like they have too much info on them. Any other suggestions that work for you? Thanks!

I always bring the MAR with me when I'm in isolation. I just make sure it doesn't touch the pt or the pts things. I hold it in my hand while I check the name band and ask for 2 identifiers.. Then lay it on my clipboard or the nurse server while I give meds. hope this helps!

thanks guys :) it just helps to be less discouraged when you hear about others experiences. I do try and tell myself not to worry about what everyone else is doing. my weaknesses are mostly skill related so practicing would be a really good idea. I should take time in the remediation room at school. I also feel pressured to go quickly with my meds, and I should just slow down and focus. My organization is off sometimes too. I have made some adaptations like making lists and putting sticky notes on my reminder sheet to help remember certain things. I'm doing well in theory , (isn't that always the case) and just so frustrated with my performance! I wish I had more than 2 days a week of clinicals it's just not enough time to master tgese skills. I applied for the externship this summer and hope I get it as I think it will help boost my confidence.

Hello :) I am a second semester nursing student in an RN diploma program. I am feeling very discouraged right now about med-surg. I feel like the weakest link in my group right now as they have all been passed on Accu checks and PO meds and I have not..not to mention I almost made a med error today that my instructor caught before it happened! Epic fail. I guess I am just looking for people who have felt this way and how they got through it. I don't want to spend my entire spring break upset and feeling like a failure!
