  1. What exam are you talking about, stephtj23? Maybe I can help?
  2. I don't know about finger cots in human medicine, but just an interesting thing to add...in my many years as a veterinary technician, finger cots were commonly used in feline declaws! After the declaw, the finger cot is rolled down over the paw and secured with elastic tape as a bandage for a short time in recovery. Hope someone answers your actual question, though!
  3. Hello Texas nurses! I am hoping for some advice from RNs who are already out there working - I am starting nursing school this fall (Monday, actually!) and am thinking about leaving my current job to try and get my foot in the door in the human medical field. I have heard that already having some experience in the field when you graduate will help a bit with getting hired after graduation. Currently I work as a medical equipment sales rep in the veterinary industry. I sell and support diagnostic equipment (EKG and BP units) as well as multi-parameter surgical monitoring equipment. I've had this job for about 6 years now, and for several years before that I was a veterinary technician. I'm wondering what kind of options I have out there for employment that would be flexible with school and also what kind of pay I would be looking at. I know that after a semester in nursing school I can get a job as a CNA or PCT, but are there any other options I haven't heard about? One thing to consider is that I currently make a decent salary+commission..anywhere from 55 to 75 grand a year. That comes at a price though, as sometimes I can work 2 weeks straight and be out of the state on business travel for days at a time, which obviously would not work with school! As a vet tech I can make about 15 dollars an hour, and that's without an RVT license. The cool thing about being a vet tech is that you are allowed to do lots of things if you are trusted (place IVs, orogastric feedings, assist and suture in surgery, etc). Even though I can probably easily find a job as a tech, I want to start working on patients without fur and claws! I don't want anyone to think that I am only concerned about the money aspect, but I AM wondering if there is anything I can do on the human side that makes more than 9 dollars an hour, which is what I have been told to expect as a CNA. Also, what is the difference between a CNA and a PCT, or are they pretty much the same? Thanks everyone for any input you may have on this. I want to get as much experience as I can while I'm in school, so any ideas would be much appreciated!
  4. So I'm curious, since tomorrow is registration...who is wanting morning classes and who is wanting afternoon/evening? I am really hoping to get afternoon classes so I can still keep my current job in some way.. What about everyone else?
  5. I received this email sometime last week, so it looks like the correct day is Wednesday. "Hello Flex I Nursing Students, The letter you all received on June 23, had the incorrect registration day. The correct day is Wednesday July 27, 2011."
  6. Maybe you could reprint the fastpass form from the acceptance email and get someone to sign it at the fingerprint place? Or did you check the fastpass website for some type of proof of payment that you could print out? Hope you are able to get something, good luck! Fingers crossed that it works out..
  7. I went to take my hospital orientation quiz today too - pretty easy. Here's to hoping we have more quizzes that are that easy in the next couple of years!! Has anyone heard if they will be using the same editions of books for the fall that were used this past spring? I'm hoping to get my books cheaper, and the more advance notice I can get to do that, the better. I wish this whole process was a little more organized, I wouldn't have known to look on the announcements part of the Nursing website about the hospital orientation quiz..I learned about it from someone posting on here! It's starting to seem like you have to be pretty on top of things, since the school is a little lacking on the information side...
  8. Really? Wow I guess I will have to take that - I was under the impression that the hospital orientation exam would be after we had the orientation!
  9. I am thinking that the BON postcard will be quick to receive, at least I hope it is! When I went online to schedule a fingerprint appointment, the soonest they had was for Friday this week, and I scheduled it 3 days in advance. I noticed on the admission packet it says we need a flu shot (seasonal), but this was not a part of the required vaccines before. I tried to call the nursing dept but of course have not received a call back from them yet - I guess I should be safe and go get a flu shot? They are harder to find now that we are out of flu season! idiopathic - I am guessing too that the tuition will be regular tuition for 10 hours, but is that twice per semester because they are flex classes? And I wonder if the nursing fees are twice per semester, too. I wish there was someone on here who could answer that is in school right now, I am trying not to take out loans and I like to know things in advance. Oh and here's a tip for everyone - if you are trying to get your books, check out half.com. I just ordered 3 of the books we will need, the current editions, for a total of less than 50 dollars - and that included shipping. Half.com and Craigslist are my bestest friends right now!
  10. YAY!!! I got my acceptance letter! Now there is a whole bunch of stuff I have to get together by June 1st. Has anyone else heard a response? I got my email on Friday, May 6. The email was from *****, San Antonio Colleges. I am curious, does anyone know how much tuition is per semester? I can't really figure out an actual number, I can see per credit hour cost but aren't there extra fees associated with the nursing program? Any info on this from anyone will help - thanks!
  11. Hello all, So...we are going into the last week of April and I wanted to check in - has anyone heard anything from SAC on getting accepted for this Fall?? I'm starting to get a little anxious with all the waiting!! :)
  12. If I may ask, can anyone tell me what kind of money you make for being a unit clerk or tech at a hospital? I am hoping to switch jobs once I get accepted into nursing school (note the confidence, there!) and I would really like to find something that is in the human medical field (I come from many years in the veterinary medical and medical sales field). I know that usually the pay for being a CNA isn't very great, but what other jobs should I look for that I would be able to get? I could easily go back to being a veterinary technician and make around 15-17 an hour, but that doesn't really get me the experience I am looking for. Any thoughts?
  13. I have a question for everyone while we are all waiting to hear back from SAC...why did you guys choose SAC instead of UTHSC (UTSA)? Was the main reason the cost and if so, do you know how much more UTHSC is for tuition and fees? I ask only because I still have this little voice in the back of my head saying I should go apply and finish my BSN instead of getting my ADN. I'm back in school a second time and I have about 60 hours already from my first time in college several years back - so really it would take me about the same time to get my BSN as it would my ADN! My main concern I guess is cost and also schedule/ demand - I will still need to work while in school. Any thoughts??
  14. I'm waiting to hear back from SAC too - I hope I get in for this fall. My friend just heard back via email, they didn't get in and they had a 3.6 GPA and had all but 2 of their classes done! I don't understand why they wouldn't have been accepted - it makes me quite nervous. I hope we all get in, my fingers are crossed!
