I'm a new graduate RN (since May) and finding a hospital-based job is so difficult, especially when you don't have any connections. Long story short, my mother met a doctor at work at he told my mother that I should work at his hospital (lets call this Hospital A). I went to HR and told them that I was referred by that doctor and they told me there's a training program for RNs. Basically you pick the department you want to work at and they'll train you for 8-10 weeks without pay. By the end of the training, they'll decide if they want to keep you or not. If they do, then you sign the contract. If they don't, then that is it. It is a tough training program/ internship. The question is, will it be worth it since other hospitals offer the versant program with pay. Also, another hospital told me they are considering me for their program in November. The interviewer asked me to give her some time to think about it but I've heard from former classmates that she doesn't follow up and may even forget. Today will mark one week since I've interviewed. When will be a good time to call her to ask if she has made up her mind? BTW I did email her a thank you. Any opinions/thoughts would be appreciated.

Bcho86- it's a little easier, but I feel that my classmates who are taking pharm and patho right now are learning way more than I ever did... so that's a disadvantage for me... but N200 (Intro to Nursing) is enough to drive you insane. Most people are getting Cs. Just be prepared... the nursing classes make the pre-reqs look like nothing. Exams are computerized, timed (almost one minute per question), and you can't go back to the question to recheck your answer. The questions are all critical thinking and applying, so memorization isn't going to help you pass. For clinicals, it's stressful because of tests (must pass with 100%) and careplanning. Everything is so fast paced; you learn a skill and then you get tested. Overall, great experience though and you learn so much.

Congrats you guys! Just be prepared for insanely tough work for the next 6 semesters!

do you have a written contract between you and your former employer?

Basic BSN program just means undergraduate nursing. You get to decide during orientation if you want two or three years. If too many people select the three year (I forgot, but I think more people wanted the three year), then a random draw will be held to determine who will have to give up their spot and be in the two year. It's all based on space accommodation. Also, many people get confused about "accelerated" and "basic" because other nursing programs say "accelerated". Even though ours say "basic" it's still considered "accelerated" from what I hear.

how many people do they accept as transfers into the program? i heard around 13, is that correct? my friend is thinking about applying there and i want to get some info. for her.

trimester= three semesters in a year (spring, summer, and fall), so no more summer breaks. seems tough to get into a BSN program nowadays. O.o

YAYUH! Feels good to get the email, doesn't it? =) Now we know we're 100% in the program. We decide during orientation. I think there are more spots in the trimester than basic? Forgot. I'm doing trimester though.

yeah the picture i took were the accepted applicants... alternate list wasn't taped to the window yet... i'm guessing because of the re-interviews/ super seniors. orientation is mandatory for accepted applicants and alternates; we get our class schedule, try on uniforms, meet the faculty, go over required documentations, etc.

Woot woot! Yeah so far 85 people made it in. So I'm guessing those people/ super seniors who are going to be reinterviewed or whatever, 5 more applicants will be picked from them? On the top of the list they said more people will be added later, so that means if your name is already on the list, you're in for sure...? Any ideas? Ahh maybe I'll just wait for the letter. lol. Hopefully it'll bring some clarification. I know I said I'll stop updating but for applicants who live hours away or don't attend CSULB I took a picture of the list for convenience sake...

No idea, but an applicant from a couple of pages back said that he got in. He didn't state it was unofficial either. lol. Ugh, so confused right now... the program needs to hurry up with the list.

People have called too... someone in this thread a couple of pages back said they're "officially" in because they called.

Aerjas- Its not like they invited people to a computer screen showing or something. My eyes were just on my own status but the person next to my status just happened to have an alternate number. Plus its not even confidential information by the way... once the list is posted it will have your name, not student ID, so everyone and anyone will know who got into the program. They don't want to let everyone know now because statuses CAN change... therefore they don't want to get people's hopes up because it's still unofficial. I'm not even celebrating because I know statuses can change within the next two weeks. BTW you're not left in the dark because you're reading this thread, so atleast you have generous people on here who took the time to update you... Okay I'm done updating on this thread. I hope everyone gets in and good luck!

lbchick32- did you talk to the people in the office or the admissions coordinator herself? Because the people in the office don't really know what's going on. The list IS already made. All of us applicants are on the computer with our statuses (unofficially). I specifically saw with my own eyes that there are 20 or more alternates. Yes, the new nursing building does provide more space, but the admittance will remain at 90. Before the new nursing building, students had to sit on the floor of classrooms because of the tight space and limited seating. The new building is just to provide students with more seats and available space.

Well once transfers are admitted into CSULB, they're no longer "transfers" but CSULB students. A senior plus transfer is still the same thing as a senior plus... doesn't matter. Not all transfers finish in 2 years though. If this wasn't a problem, then the VP wouldn't need to approve it right? hmm... they have many alternates to choose from if the 5 senior pluses don't get in... I think 20+ alternates so far. 110 got interviewed but there are also people like me who already completed the interview earlier this year, so we're not in the "110".

No problem! If accepted, are you guys planning on doing the basic or trimester? Lets hope I'm wrong and the VP approves everything today. Then they can quickly mail the letters out and post the list up. :) *cross fingers*

Sorry, I'm not sure if it applies to senior pluses that are transfers... I didn't ask. Could be for both. What I don't understand is that the university should've known senior pluses applied to the university as pre-nursing majors and know how many units they have based on the transcripts... Hmm I think (in my opinion) it's not about the statistics but about accommodation... the school is packed. More packed than CSUF and CSULA. Almost every major at CSULB is impacted. They need senior pluses to graduate... and yes, the school does try push you into graduation and out of the school. As I've said before, there is a high dropout rate in the nursing program. If senior pluses drop out, what's next? I'll try to visit again, but I think they're annoyed because I drop by too much to see if the list is displayed. Yeah, they're getting frustrated with the phone calls and drop-ins. They seem to be really busy. Yeah but from what I remember, she just checked my units. Didn't ask if I was a CSULB student or a transfer. Good luck!

LOL BCHO86! I NEVER SAID THAT! Hahahah. It's up to the Vice President of CSULB. He could say no after all that trouble though. CSULB's main goal is to push students into graduation ASAP. As you guys already know, so many majors are impacted at the university. They need senior pluses to graduate already... so what if these senior pluses do get into the program and end up dropping out (yes, there is a high dropout rate)?! Now what? I guess that's the VP's main concern... Anyways, bye! Good luck! hahah.

I ALWAYS talk to the admissions coordinator... that's where I get my information from, and that's why all my information are legit. Who better to get the information from than the person whose going to admit you?! She probably thinks I'm annoying because I just show up in her office. LOL. My bad... but she's so nice though. I applied last Fall but was Alternate #38... with Microbiology in progress. I'm still on that list, so it seems hopeless to get into Fall 2010. CSULB allows pre-nursing majors to apply to the nursing program ONLY twice. So Spring 2011 is my last chance. My score is now above 9.00 (don't want to say exactly what it is due to privacy). Yes, every 0.01 points count. My friend made it into Fall 2010 with 0.16 points more than me and she was Alternate #7 while I was Alternate #38.... yeah big difference. Spring is easier to get into than Fall, as I've mentioned before. She asked for my name and scrolled to my last name on the comp. Next to my name were units (no I'm not a senior plus) and some info. My status said "admitted". I saw other applicants had the status "Alternate (whatever their ranking number is)". I saw a lot of Alternates...atleast eighteen. There could be more because she didn't scroll down (my last name is at the top of the alphabet). But this is still unofficial, and statuses can change anytime! Yeah TWO more weeks, like I've said before, re-interviews and the VP's approval of senior pluses. So don't expect to find out next Monday. But anyways I'm happy. Even though it's unofficial, 99% is a pretty high probability that I will get in. She kept telling me PATIENCE, because I want the list up on her window! Hahaha.

and yes THEY'RE STILL RE-INTERVIEWING people and waiting for the vice president's approval, hence TWO more weeks. sorry for the bad news, but it's the truth. All my info are straight out of the admissions coord. herself. So nothing is false news.

they're still waiting for approval from the VP. IT's GOING TO BE ANOTHER TWO WEEKS. SO DON't COUNT ON NOVEMBER 1st! How do I know? Just talked to the coordinator. She was on the phone with someone that called abt their low score... Yeah sucks. Apparently, Jomort08's admission into the program isn't official yet, and neither is mine. I'm unofficially in the program with a competitive score. She said it's 99% likely I'm going to officially be in the program cuz I'm not a super/ super super senior. Woot woot! =) I actually knew this two weeks ago but couldn't say anything cuz it's unofficial AND she didn't want anyone to bother her. But okay, I'm happy. She practically pushed me out of the office cuz she was so busy. Lol. I'm always popping up in her office. Anyways, good luck everyone. If you guys do get in, I hope to meet you all and we can study together! =)

jomort08- yeah they haven't been accepting lower division transfers for a while now... i thought you said it's because you didn't complete one of the required classes?! anyways i saw on the csulb website that the app. process for spring 2011 remains open until november 10th. this is unbelievable!!! i'm just wondering if this means that the nursing department is still doing interviews due to this unusual application extention...?!

yeah for fall 2010 they had more time though to complete the requirements... and it's a lot! Hopefully they tell you guys by nov. 1st...
