So I just started this job 2 weeks ago... I am the district nurse. I oversee 5 schools and 4 LPNs. It is a BIG job and a lot of responsibility. The hiring committee had me sign a teacher contract - which didn't seem fitting for my position, but I wasn't going to argue at that point. But now as I am starting the job and living the reality of what is all entailed... I think I should be on an Administration contract... not only for the pay (as right now I am making what a first year teacher does)... but to reflect the responsibility and fully fit the position. The district has had a lot of turnover in this position and now I can see why... if I were fully money focused I could easily see that I could make more working part-time as an RN in another facility. I can't complain I love the hours and school year timeline... but I think my contract should still be changed. The school board votes to accept my contract in 2 weeks. Do you think it is worth a try to change my contract? I could bring it up to our new Superintendent (I think he would at least hear me out... he is new and really great)... What do you think? Any advice? suggestions? been in a similar situation?

I am in the exact same boat!! But I am 24 and look 17 :) About a month ago I was hired as the district nurse and am in charge of 5 schools and 4 LPNs! It is overwhelming, but good experience and great hours. I don't see myself as doing this forever, but it is going alright. Sooo much to learn and lots of paperwork and minimal student interaction for me... but will look great on a resume and it is experience. Good luck. The hardest part for me is that you have to totally rely on your self as everyone else is in the business of education and not health care. They don't fully understand your language, your concerns, or your questions. It is definitely different than acute care!

So, this is my first post and I am a new grad that was hired only a month ago to be a district nurse! I am overwhelmed and unsure of this position, but none-the-less I am trying my best and trying to navigate my way through all my responsibilities. Lately our district - principals, teachers, students, parents, & health staff have been debating about washing hands before and after lunch (especially in the elementary schools) vs. using waterless alcohol rubs or wipes. It is such a debate because the easy and less time consuming alcohol rub is not effective in terms of getting rid of the peanut proteins (which so many of our young students possess a life-threatening allergy to). We want to create a safe atmosphere, but also consider time, money, energy, etc. the way everyone is voting (and I'd like to make my final decision based on facts and best practice): Principals - "we've budgeted for the alcohol wipes" "let's do what we have planned" Teachers - "too much time to have everyone wash hands before and after" "come on! we want the kids to be safe, but really? wash hands twice!" Health Staff - "we are looking to you (ME!) for guidance" Parents of students with LTA - "you better do what is best for our children" Me - "what is best?" "wouldn't handwashing be beneficial in so many ways - teach students to be responsible and practice good hand hygiene, etc." What do you think? Any resources? or experience? THANKS!
