RPN program...1st week...So overwhelmed!!!!
Thank you very much everyone. I haven't started my p/t job, but will soon. I will definitely not allow my job to get in the way of the time that needs to be devoted to this program. If it gets to that point, I will quit the job. Thanks again everyone...

RPN program...1st week...So overwhelmed!!!!
Hi Everyone, So this is my first week; 2nd day in the RPN program and I already feel like my head is spinning out of control. There is so much being thrown at you in each class. I'm worried about being able to keep my p/t job, being on top or readings, assignments, etc. Is this normal? Have I bitten off more than I could chew? I have so much reading (and making notes) to do, that I don't even know where to start. Any words of advice??? Thanks a million.

Orientation for Practical Nursing Program (yesterday)
Hello everyone, So I had my orientation session for the RPN program ( I start n.week Tues.) and it was very informative. The experience however, was really daunting:crying2:. I appreciated the fact that the program coordinators didn't sugar coat the journey to the end and I know going in that it will not be a walk in the park. However, it really seems like this program will demand all of my time (which is understandable, given the type of course that it is) and I am getting worried that I may not be able to keep a p/t job while in school, when I really need to. The prog.coordinators said that in order to pass any subject , your study time must be double your in class time. I am looking foward to the road ahead, but I am bit nervous now going in. Can anyone share their experience while taking the RPN progam; specifically those who worked p/t. Thanks in advance for all your responses.:)

hi rn2b_2015 , thank you so much for you response. we are in similar situations. what school will you be attending? we should definitely keep in touch to share each other's progress. are you planning on working while in school? i am. i would love to complete the bachelors program after, but i think it would be best to for me to work for 1.5 years, gain some experience in the field, pay down some debt and then move forward. all the best to you hun and let me know what school you will be attending. i will be attending centennial college.

RPNs that remain RPNs?
Thank you for clarifying as well as the words of encouragement. It is very easy to take things out of context when you're not actually speaking to someone, so on that note, I do apologise. All the best and thanks again.

RPNs that remain RPNs?
'thank you' m_aidez for your response. however, i wasn't implying that you have a crystal ball in order to predict employment availability. so the snide remark was really unecessary. my decision to pursue this career wasn't based soley on 'job security.' i have a huge respect for anyone who is employed as a nurse, and i believe that pursuing a career where i am helping people would be my way of giving back. however, i was just looking to get some type of feedback from people who are already working in the field or new grads who are job hunting. again, 'thank you.'

RPNs that remain RPNs?
I will be starting the Practical Nursing Program this fall in a college in Toronto. I am really excited, but since joining this site (I absolutely love all the posts and feedback), I am now realizing that the job market for in this field is really slim; which is odd considering the fact that there is shortage of nurses. Also, I'm wondering if it is worth it to pursue BScN once I'm in the field. I am now hearing about all the RNs that are being laid off. Though it seems like the job market for RPNs isn't that great either, I'm wondering which way is the best way to go. I would hate to know that after working so hard get an education, that it will be slim picking out there in the work force. I would also like to know what options an RPN has to advance if he/she doesn't want to go the RN/BScn route? Please advise.

Hi Ginger08, You mentioned that you worked on the weekends while in the practical nursing program. I just wanted to know how you were able to manage the part-time job when you were sent on your placement? How was the placement set up and where was your placement. Thank you so much?

Thank you so much Ginger80. I do plan on working the weekends, so it's great to know someone else did and was able to come out on top. Good luck! How is the job hunting going by the way? I am not hearing to many great things about the market right now. All the best to you. Many thanks again.

RPN...Continuing Education
Hi, Are there any courses that a Registered Practical Nurse in Toronto, Ontario can take to increase his/her earning potential, without having to take Registered Nursing program? What options do a new graduate and one who is already working in the Practical Nursing field have? Thank you for your responses.

RPN Jobs in the GTA
You know, I've been hearing the same thing. I will be starting the rpn program in september. I've been hearing that a lot of rns are getting laid off and being replaced by rpns b/c the rpns pretty much do the same work as the rns and get paid less. Could someone please shed some light on this? Thanks for bringing it up.

thanks m_aidez , that is great advice. i am usually very organized and have really good time management skills. let's hope it helps. i am also concerned b/c i plan on getting a part time job and i am wondering if i will be able to juggle the two.i know that the practical nursing program demands a lot of your time (so i've heard). i just want to make sure i have time for both. thanks again.

Horror stories about RPN program...Yikes!!!
I am hearing all these horror stories about the RPN program (extremely difficult {I don't mind hard work, it always pays off in the end}, high drop out rate, etc). If anyone on here took the Registered Practical Nursing at any college in Toronto, Ontario. Please share some insight. I am very excited and can't wait to begin this Fall, but I am very nervous as well and don't want to take those feelings along with me into my First Year. Any, tips or advices? Pleas share your experiences. Many thanks.

First Year Nursing Student
Hello all, I will be starting the the Practical Nursing program in few weeks and I am very excited. Though I have received many 'That a girl' from people, I've also received 'Oh my God, are you sure, why nursing?' I just wanted to know form anyone who is already employed as an rpn, what they would say is the most challenging part of the job and how does it differ in terms of job desription from an rn. I would also like to know what type of hours and pay does an rpn get coming straight out of school and how long would you say it takes to find employment after school? I believe that being a nurse is my way of giving back and I am very happy and proud of my decision to pursue this career. P.S...Can some also tell me a bit more about the exam with the Ontario Nurses Assoc. When will I have to take that exam (how long after completing the program). Many thanks MC
