  1. Hi Jenni! I work in a hospital as a Unit Clerk and Patient Care Aid 24 hours a week in two 12 hour shifts. I did have some experience from working in a nursing home years ago, but I am receiving a lot of on the job training. The hospital I work for does a lot of on-the-job training. I'm not exactly in the Metro Detroit area but closer to Ann Arbor, however the system I work for is all over the Metro Detroit area. Check out the Trinity Health System, perhaps there is something there you would be interested in. I think it's a great idea to get some hands on experience before you start your program. Good luck!
  2. Yay! Someone else with Trinity! Most likely I will be going to Schoolcraft for at least my pre-req's. I'm not sure where I will actually apply for clinicals. The waitlists everywhere are crazy. I am considering doing my pre-req's at Schoolcraft and then transfering to a BSN program. A friend of mine graduated from Eastern's BSN program last year and didn't have a wait. It all depends on finances. I don't qualify for any grants for financial aid due to my husband's income and we don't want to take out student loans if we can avoid it. So I guess we will see where we are at in a couple of years and proceed from there. What kind of process did you have to go through, coming from another country, to work in the States? Did you just have to take the MI Boards? Good luck with your new job!
  3. Hi! I recently hired in at St. Joe's as a PCA to gain experience and to help pay for my pre-req's for school. I can't tell you how impressed I am with the St. Joe's system after going through orientation. I know a couple of nurses who work at various St. Joe's campuses and they have nothing but wonderful things to say about the system. I applied through the website: http://www.jobscience.com/?idset=5012,SJMMC001 I also know that U of M is constantly hiring as well. My daughter is a patient at the Congenital Heart Clinic there and she has had wonderful care from the nurses and Physicians there. Good luck with your job search.
  4. I could never get my oldest son (now 7 years old) to latch correctly and ended up giving him breastmilk in a bottle for eight months when I became pregnant with #2. That meant pumping every three hours around the clock! My younger son (now 6 years old) latched on in the delivery room and didn't stop until he was 20 months old. My daughter (now three years old) nursed from the delivery room until 29 months. I loved nursing my children, it was so much more convenient than bottles. :)
  5. Thanks for the input. I am an not currently in nursing school. I will be starting back to school (after a nine year break,) in the fall at LCC to finish my pre-req's. The nursing advisor at LCC actually told me about Sparrow's scholarship and mentioned that Ingham also has a similar program. My DH and I are trying to figure out how to manage the expense of school without student loans. We worked through the FA application but it doesn't look like I would receive much, if any, aid due to my DH's salary. The scholarship seems like a good option. Although it is quite a long commute it would be worth it for a couple of years.:) Stephanie
  6. I was wondering if anyone has applied for, currently using or is going to apply for Sparrow Hospital's Nurse Scholarship Program to pay for their final year of school. Hopefully the link below works. http://www.sparrow.org/humanresources/nursesch.asp Has anyone worked for or is currently working at Sparrow Hospital? Were your experiences there good, bad? Thanks for the info. Stephanie
  7. Hi! I do not attend Washtenaw but I recently spoke to the nursing advisor about the program. She told me the wait list was rather long. She also told me that they have not accepted an out-of-district student into the nursing program in three years! She actually advised me to check out Schoolcraft or LCC because I live in Livingston county. I will be attending LCC in the fall to finish my pre-req's. Good luck with school!:) Stephanie
  8. Hi Everyone. I'm not in school at the moment but will be enrolling at LCC for the fall to finish my pre-req's and hopefully apply for the nurisng program for fall of 2005. Tonia, could I ask you a few questions about the part time program? I have three small children so it would be much easier for me to do the program at night. How many hours a week (in general,) are you in class? Is there a certain amount of classes you are required to take each semester or can you just limit your classes to one or two per semester? Thanks for the info. Stephanie
