I can't hardly wait for my interview! I just hope they will be willing to be flexible with my student schedule I've never interviewed with a hospital before so I have no idea what to expect. After the regular interview she if the director of the unit has time, she hopes to have me also meet with her also....(I think that was what she called her...). :)

So you're an RN who wants to be an esthetician, hm? I am an esthetician who wants to be an RN :) Actually...at this point I have let my license lapse. I went to Catherine Hines (in Medford) because at the time, NH did not have any kind of esthetics schooling and actually did not even license estheticians separately. This was over 10 years ago. Currently Im going attending SJS of Practical Nursing. I have thought that I might like to actually work with a dermatologist in some way. I have also thought about the medical esthetics field, though I do not really have a knowledge base of it. My understanding is that someone in the field of medical esthetics would be working in a dermatologists office and working under him. Truly...I don't really see what you'd be able to without a doctor helping you in the way of 'real' treatments. I will be looking forward to any kind of info you find on this! :)

Hi everyone. I'm reading this thread with great interest. Im a nursing student (LPN at this time) and also a pt time LNA. I applied for a position as a NICU tech at a local hospital. I got called back and I am soooo excited! I hope that the hours are going to work for me, and of course that I get hired. I definitely need flexibility with scheduling due to school. Im not sure what days/nights rotating means.....its 24 hours a I guess. I've read about one person who said her NICU uses techs. Anyone else?

Last week I assesed my patient, took vitals, got my meds ready and then got my instructor. My patients b/p med was dependent on one med and I got 90/62. The machine was used by the Aide just after me and it showed 82/60. The patients med was to be held if the sbp was below 90. My instructor told me that because 'my' reading was so close we'd take it again but my nurse had told me to hold the med. We took it again and I read 90/58 and my instructor told me I should be giving that med. My instructor (who works full time as an educator at this particular hospital and just part time teaching clinicals for the school) went and asked the nurse again and she said No..hold the medication. The machine read the pressure too low. I can tell you that my instructor returned to me, muttering under her breath and told me we were holding it because of the nurse and to note exactly what the pressure was. She repeated to me what I had already knew from working as an aide myself.....manuals are much more accurate!

Hm....why not La leche? Firstly, its appears that its a major process going through the whole certification just to be a leader. I was never a member. Somehow I thought you had to be. I could be wrong, though. Im not sure...I think a big part of my feelings towards not wanting to work through the LaLeche is that I am not currently nursing one of my own kids. Its something to investigate, perhaps. Yes, the whole hours thing has me wondering where I would get that much time consulting....without a certification. I knew of the WIC peer counseling.

Im thinking terms of working with.....and of course. I would think as a nurse I would have malpractice insurance as well.

Thanks everyone for all of the info. I have a local LC who has also given me some info. She also says that I might be able to work with a LC in the hospital. I'm thinking even that would be fine. I dont necessarily need to wear the title of *Lacation Consultant* but just really wish to help other nursing mothers.

Hey everyone... I haven't seen really anything devoted to this subject. For a long time I have wanted to do something like breastfeeding consulting. I just started nursing school in the fall and its a LPN program. I *think I remember reading that I would need an RN for something like this? I remember when I had my second child, some very young woman came into my hospital room trying to awkwardly trying to help me but it pretty apparent that she had never nursed a kid herself....and being an advocate of it, I have always thought this was something I would like to pursue. Anyone have anything that could lead me in that direction. I really have no desire to go through a lalechee *spelling fumbled type education. Thanks :)

Aah....this is where my LNA trning will come in handy. It will help out just in the being comfortable part of this process. You will just ask someone to help you. Im guessing another nurse, your instructor or an LNA (or CNA ..same thing).

Well, an update. Im enrolled at St. Joseph's School of Practical Nursing :-) Yaaaaaay. I went yesterday for the information exchange and also met with the financial aid person. I passed the Math test they gave us.......so, I am *in* :-) I still cant believe it. Got the book list, schedule for September and the invoice for payment :) I cant believe how quickly this whole process was. I started a while back applying to St. Joes and had all of my things into them except for my Net test. At that point, I decided I was going to go with a different school because it was a shorter program, didnt take the summers off (yes, a nightmare for me also with three kids.....I was hopefully going to switch to the night program during the summer months). Turns out that they werent an accredited school(after being told by the state and the school they were). I quickly called St. Joes last week...monday. They said that it was too late, the last net test was scheduled for Wednesday and I wouldnt be able to get in.......but I said AHA! I took it already can i send my scores? I would need to hurry. I overnighted them, they got them on Wednesday. They already hade my references, application,etc. On Friday of last week I got my letter saying I met all the requirements. Called Monday to set up an interview and had that on thursday..yesterday. So, its been two weeks. Im in shock :) I hope I can make it through. Oh...also, they do have that arrangement with Riv but its for the night program. Riv reserves seats for St. Joes in the night class which is part time. I dont see why one couldnt try to get into the day program regardless. Actually, I have someone at work who went through St. Joes and is going full time for her RN at Riv. For ADN...RN, going part time it takes 2 years. Good info to tuck away for future reference. One step at a time Good luck to you at Riv!!! It is so exciting :-)

Thanks. I didnt realize there was a program in Keene! 11 months is better than 18, I think....though I wonder if the summer off and having Friday's off will be nice. Once you begin clinicals do you still have those Fridays off? I go on THursday and I will most likely be finding out all the information I need....in the mean time Im curious.

Thanks for your response. I did end up taking the NET test and just heard back from St. Josephs that I met the requirements. Yay :) In my letter, it said I would have to take a basic math proficiency test at the interview (and financial aid meeting) and passs it with a 75%. Is this standard? I didnt know if maybe I didnt have a high enough math score on the NET test. Tell me about your expereince with the school. I was also interested in attending another school and Im curious to hear from graduates. I am also an LNA (with jsut a years experience). I think its very important to know what youre getting into so I am glad I have this experience. ANyway, I work with several nurses who went to St. Joes as well. What is the process going on to RN school at Riv? How much longer will you have to go? Thanks again for your response :-)

Thanks for that info Whitney!! So from the sounds of it there *is* a good wait to get into the tech schools. But... i work at an assisted living facility and many of the nurses had gone to St. Joe's...a couple are very recent grads...(one also went to Riviere and one is working on her RN at Riv). All of the nurses who went to St. Josephs tell me it was a piece of cake getting into the program there. They apply and get it....so that is different then from the tech schools, I guess? So then...the tech schools..those that are all related...if you apply in Manchester, does that make you eligible in Nashua or vice versa? Or you apply to those seperately? :-) Thanks so much :-) Congratulations to you!!

Im not a nurse yet.....but I just wanted to say how much I love this hospital. My mother had her reconstruction surgery from her mastectomy there. The nurses were superb, the hospital immaculate. I cant say enough. The nurse to patient ration was great. Speaking with the staff, I learned that there are people who travel quite a distance to work at that hospital. It was a major difference from the Nashua hospitals though maybe just because its so large?

wellllll, I finished my application and will mail it off today. Im a bit discouraged already though as I have heard it is really tough to get into nursing school from some. Others I work with say it was easy and seems like they got right in. Whats the real deal? How long from when you applied til you got in? A girl I work with told me she is in a pre health studies course at the Nashua VocTech....that a girl there has been waiting for 2 years. Ack....Is two years the norm? How easy was it? I guess the Nashua VocTech is full for 2004 and they are filling for 2005. Im sure St. Joes is full but Im still applying anyway. Should I also apply in Manchester for the Tech college if Im applying for the Nashua campus or is that not necessary? My story is that Ive been out of highschool for 17 years, raising a family. My mom was diagnosed with breastcancer in 2002 and I decided that I want to become a nurse once my children were all in school. My littlest one will be in first grade come fall so Ive started the journey. Any one? Thanks...

Now..tell me what happens if I dont pass the test? What should be my next step besides trying to take the test again? Thanks for your help :-)

Hi everyone...great to find you all. I am planning on taking the entrance exam for St. Joe's school of nursing and Im first, terrified and second want to try and study up on what I will be tested on. What is this test called? I have read about something called PAX? What kind of study guide should I get to help me? I've been out of high school for 15 years... Thanks so much.
