  1. some nurse should not be allowed to wear white pants..they r not flattering and some forget to check the mirror..they look really unprofessional
  2. Yesterday had a 15 yo g2 p2 but its ok cuz they,re married????? Hubby wanted to know how soon she could run...so I asked if she jogged and dad replied..no we play basketball, my first thought...they should stick to basketball...unbelievable...
  3. quick question..ive never worked with lvns til I moved to TX sooo can anyone explain to me why the LVN cannot do an initial assessment but is competent to do later assessments either we trust their skills or we dont what is up with that!!!
  4. I work couplet care ..all new pts(mom and baby) have an initial assessment by an RN and every 24 hour thereafter..I would never sign someone elses assessment without doing it myself and if thats what needs to be done why even assign the LVN the pts????
  5. per diem is awesome but not much good unless you dont need benefits and can afford to be cancelled if necessary...you usually make a little more but are the first one cancelled if census is low...it is great if you are not the primary breadwinner and if you can afford to do it it gives a lot of flexibility when you have kids and activities...make sure and check how many hours and how many holidays and weekends you owe them...and get it in writing..also clarify any floaTING COMMITTMENTS...I DO PER DIEM AND LOVE IT NOW THAT KIDS ARE GROWN i CAN TAKE A WEEK OFF ANY TIME i PLAN FOR IT wITHOUT NEEDING MANAGEMENT PERMISSION...GOOD LUCK... Whoops sorry caps got locked I wasnt yelling..my bad...
  6. when i worked in New jersey you could only legally do 18 hours straight not sure about Tx where I live now...bottom line I think anything over 18 hours and Im just asking for trouble...mistakes happen!
  7. im usually thrilled tio have them only prob is that sometimes they forget to tell you when vital signs are outside of norm...u need to keep on top of that but usually they are a saving grace...
  8. u r majorly lucky perhaps your nm could do inservice at other places on how to manage and retain staff..that is soooo unusual in these days...we just had new upper management and her attitude is depressing our immediate manager(who is lovely and trying her best) and decimating our staff ; 11 left L and D and 4 from couplet..and its not over yet staffing is sooo bad ..the nurses are struggling terribly even the pool nurses wont come back and they are used to being dumped on!!!!

no they did not...the nurses discovered it..
  10. never in 28 years knock wood but i always carry my own malpractice ..we were taught in college that the hosp would protect us in order to protect themselves but if we truly made a harmful error they could then sue us .. NSO is cheap and gives me peace of mind
  11. I'm here less thatn a year and I love it awesome weather nice people slower pace (outside of work) than east coast youll love it wanna work couplet care

u should get paid even though its not mandatory if it affects your eval in my mind that makes it mandatory...HR is a good place to start

great job! this is why we keep up NRP plus its good to be willing to go to deliveries when others are afraid to...you will gain confidence every time u do well and when thngs go badly, u will know whether u did the best that could be done...congrats (pay isnt everything is it?)
  14. 11 years old...retarded...prob incest...very sad baby died in a house fire within the year i was the only one who felt she shouldnt take the baby home.even under her mothers supervision...hello... howd she get pg in the first place.?..under same moms supervision(how hard is this)... social services said i was wrong to think everyone could go to a normal home hate dyfs in nj still think about that poor baby some infertile couple woulda just adored him...

I mean bands are on and someone forgets to check..wrong mom is temporarily given someone elses baby and feeds it... tempers flare and everyone is upset...this has happened at all 4 nurseries I have worked at and that involves 3 different states...(by the way just to clarify...it was Not me .. kinda sounds like it from my posting) but I am hyperdiligent as I have seen it happen and the nurse is always devastated and quite frankly these are usually fantastic nurses who NORMALLY always check also but something usually precipitates a momentary lapse in their usual procedure..from my experience it only happens when staffing is bad...I certainly see a way to resolve this but have chosen throughout my career to stay a peon floor nurse...managers only look at budget and have to answer to a higher accounting...In my experience I have seen wonderful floor nurses try to go into management and they dont cut it if they try to protect their nurses from understaffing...just my opinion but hey 28 years of experience and i keep seeing the same old things happen...ya gotta wonder...:balloons: .be safe...
  16. 4-1 with stable moms and babes sounds reasonable and safe with some recent occurrences at our hospital we r hoping to get back to that... errors hopefully will cause adminis. to rethink the value of cutting budget if u r gonna give it back in lawsuits!!!
  17. NOT TRUE...just moved to tx from jersey and as a per diem nurse i got a 10$ per hour pay cut and my malpractice ins tripled!!!
  18. I just started couplet care at a new hospital in a new state my last place utilized 4 couplets and maybe getting an admission...where I work now we started with 4 and getting one but lately they have cut us to the bone and we start with 4 or 5 and may even get up to 6!!! way too much I would love to know what is standard...the prob here is that admin says well one is going home for ex without realizing that gettin one in AND sending one out is a lot of paperwork and physical nursing time and acuity is Never considered...our complaint rate has skyrocketed and the nurses are burning out and many have quit!!! I firmly believe 4 is reasonable and that allows for pt education which has totally gone the wayside here ...no time!!

Does anyone know where I can obtain statistics on babies who were given to the wrong mother on couplet units??? I work in couplet care now but have noticed this error has happened at every place I've worked...I would like to research it...it sure is devastating to the nurse when it happens and many times it is a function of understaffing ...my opinion I know... but I would love data to support my hypothesis so that I can try to institute better nurse patient ratios where I work...
