As an OB instructor I can tell you what you will do....you will use and adapt the assessment and patient care skills you have learned in other rotations to provide care to a new population. This is no different than any other rotation in your studies. You will spend time in L&D assisting your client though that process, you will work with mother/baby couplets as they recover from the work of labor, you will work with the hospitalized mom-to-be that is trying to stay out of early labor, and you will work with newborns in both the nursery and NICU. These areas are not everyone's favorite just as Med/surg is not mine. But as nurses, we learn to care for clients across the lifespan and through birth, death, and everything in between. Approach your clinical willing to learn. Each clinical experience heightens your knowledge. PS. The one poster's "I'll do as little as possible" (in my rotation) would result in a failure.

I don't mean to be insensitive, but what did you and your spouse and children discuss BEFORE you applied and were accepted? I ask because most prospective students do not have this discussion prior to application to the program or have only a superficial discussion and just expect that everything will be fine. Your going to school changes the family - not a good or bad thing, it just is. What expectations did your husband have as far as your role in the family before school and now that you are in school? What were/are your expectations for your hubby and teen before school and now that you are in school? Were all these things discussed...thoroughly? I'm sensing it was not and perhaps your hubby doesn't even really want you in school. Maybe this wasn't the best time to go? You will need to have this discussion with your spouse and teen. You cannot just change your role and your expectations for the family - it is unfair. All members of the family need to be involved and it probably will not work out without negotiation and maybe a little conflict. Hopefully, cool heads will prevail and you and your spouse will come to a workable solution. You will not get all you want but hopefully you can get what you need. Several tips: Childcare you trust so you can stay at school or the library to study as much as possible. When you are home, be home. Develop a list of friends/family that can help out with getting teen to and from things. Teen can wash their own clothes! Smother hubby with love as often as you can....makes them a lot more eager to help! Sorry so bleak and hope it works out.

All states have Ombudsman that oversee LTC facilities. An anonymous complaint to the Ombudsman will be investigated within 24 hours. The facility should have Ombudsman info posted right along with the "Patient Rights" info. If not, google Senior Ombudsman for your state or LTC Ombudsman for your state. Good luck! If you live in Idaho - ISU has an accelerated BSN for people with degrees in other fields. 4 semesters (15 months), then you can apply to a masters level CRNA program. Good luck!

Any advise on dealing with student couples in clinical. We have one couple who seem to be attached at the hip. There is a cultural issue also. Man is white american, female is korean and somewhat subservient. I have assigned them to separate clinical groups (a standard practice here) and they (especially hubby) is arguing this practice. Any suggestions?

It is against the law in my state to present your self as a nurse without appropriate licensure (LPN, RN). There is a fine involved. Check with your state board of nursing and report her.

It is illegal in Idaho.

:) you are preaching to the choir, sister!!! Tell everyone who uses "nurse" incorrectly this exact same thing. In Idaho, the Nurse Practice Act makes it illegal to be called "nurse" without proper licensure. Get this placed in your state's Nurse Practice Act too.

This is one of my pet peeves :angryfire (that and sloppy, unprofessional nurses of any degree). I correct each an every MA or MD that uses the word nurse inappropriately. As nursing supervisor in a private practice, all assistants (LPN, RN and MA) wear name tags that include their profession. In Idaho, it is now against the law to claim to be a nurse if you are not. I'm not exactly sure how to report it though. It takes a lot of educational effort to make the MDs, other nurses, MAs and patients understand the importance of this title. I, for one, am willing to fight that good fight!!! Check your state's Nurse Practice Act. If this is not part of it, petition to have it added. When it is added, let people know!
