  1. I plan to move to another state and will need a temporary job. I thought about taking a travel nurse assignment but am concerned about the length of the contract with the travel agency. I will only need a short assignment. Do travel agency make you sign a contact with them for a specific length of time? Can you just do one assignment with the agency? Are there any penalities for leaving an assignment or contract early?
  2. Thanks for the info. I just considered myself young and healthy. I never really have gotten sick and I felt I did not need the vaccines. I got one several years ago. At my hospital, once a patient is being ruled out or is positive for the flu they are placed on droplet precautions and we have to wear a mask to enter the room.
  3. Hi, I work in a busy MICU and have recently been seeing more H1N1 positive patients. I chose not to take the vaccine this years as I have never taken the vaccine before. I am getting concerned since I keep getting asked if I have been is so so's room and if I have had the H1N1 vaccine. It seems that our patients are found positive for H1N1 after they have been on our unit for a few days and have not been on droplet precautions. For those who have not taken the flu vaccines are any of you getting sick after being exposed to H1N1? Are any you concerned about getting sick? Have you heard of any other nurses getting sick after being exposed and if so how sick? I am starting to "freak out" a little.
  4. Thank you Mahanabay and Zenman. I appreciate your frankness, this is what I am looking for. I definitely want to know what I am looking at before I make the move and find I have made a mistake. I have tried to research the job market for NP's in Hawaii but I am coming up with nothing except for what I am getting here. I am not set on any particular island but I have visited Oahu and found it to be too crowded. I will have to check out Kona.
  5. Can you still work as an RN once you become an NP?
  6. Did you work as a NP or RN while you were there? If a NP, can you tell me more about your experience? Oahu is where I have visited and really loved it but the island is too crowded. I have been researching other islands and I really like Hilo on the Big Island. I am planning to visit this summer to get an idea about the island and the job market. There is just not much information on line about NP's in Hawaii so I am having a difficult time finding information. Thanks for any information.
  7. Thanks. I have visited Hawaii a few times and really enjoyed it. We have a few friends living there but they do not work in the medical field. I will be finished with school next year and just trying to find out how life is for the NP's in Hawaii. I have heard that you need to find a job before you go over. I have looked on some healthcare systems sites but not a lot of information. Have you worked over there?
  8. I am thinking about moving to the big island of Hawaii and would like to find out what its like for the FNP's in Hawaii. Thanks for any information.
  9. I am in FNP program. I should be in an ACNP or ENP program but the schools in my area are limited to the programs they offer. I figure that once I complete the FNP I will work on ACNP as a post-masters. I really love the MICU. During my interview in the MICU, I felt at home. For comfort I would choose the MI over ER but I know that I need the ER experience. If the ER is offered to me I will accept, maybe I can work in the MI as a prn nurse. Thanks
  10. I have this same question except I am currently in a NP program and have been working as a RN for six years. The last 3 years I have been working in MICU. I love the MICU and have gained valuable experience. I just interviewed at a level 1 trauma ER and at a larger MICU than where I am currently working. I trying to figure out what position I should take, which one would be more valuable. What do you guys suggest? Thanks
