  1. I appreciate everything that has been written, but after a few discussions with the admission process, they say that the essay is almost as important as the actual grades. This program is not as difficult to get in as some local schools. At Ivy Tech in Fort Wayne I wasnt approved due only to grades. They have a point system and the total could be 223 pts. 30 for each A, 20 for each b. etd. In previous years it took 185-190 to get into the program. The lowest going into their fall was 210. Which meant all A's in the 4 prereqs and 90+ on the Teas. I figured they used my grades more like a check sheet. If you had above a 3.0 you were OK. As for rent, I have checked out several rental units near Tulane, St. Charles, close to the Qtr and all move the Kenner/Metairie. I finally chose one of the Tonti Properties. They have about 3 or 4 properties that are all studios which are really close to a one bedroom. They are about 450 sq ft for about $470-480. One is called Summit and another is Lake View or Lake Villas. The one unit doesnt have a pool, but they have covered parking. I got a 1 br for $615. It is 650 sq ft and is $630. You need to get a deposit in ASAP. They dont "hold" apt's unless you put up the application fee and a deposit. They do a thorough financial check. Two girls, one in OLOL the other from Delgado were denied due to lack of income proof. They have student contacts and you can get in for 6 months and then month to month. The grounds are well kept. They dont have W/D's in the unit but have a a very clean WD room that is card opperated. Its costs 1.25 per load in the washer and Dryer. Also if you get in and use a reference that individual gets a $200 credit to their account. There are two tonti's. All are located in the Metairie/Kenner area. I think for the money, this is the best option. If you like the noise of the qtr or st. Charles, you might find a low cost share rental. Most things near Tulane look at about $600+ and 700+ if you it really nice. Most of the rental units smell musty etc. Also be aware of the units from Bruno. There are about 5-6 different properties, I looked at two and both needed the gated parking that they had and the units were crappy. Hope some of this helped. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
  2. Hi, you should look at the blue print for the test. It is posted on blackboard. You should also review the note pages. Pay special attention to the objectives and makesure you know the answers to those. I would also recommend looking at your notes and anything that Dr. Hull mentioned that was very very very important you can bet she will have on the test. Know your safety issues. Dr. Hull is very big on safety. Also know the antidotes for the various drugs and indicators/contradicators for various illnesses / drugs.
  3. curious and everyone else on this site. did any of you get a copy of the course calendar from (moderator edit of name). i believe (moderator edit of name) just finalized it in the past few days and i received a copy it shows the date etc. for the tests. let me know i can forward that as well. i believe test two is the following week and test three the middle of week four. classes i think are done after at the end of week 3.
  4. Hey everyone, I think I forwarded the notes from the class for everything through test two. I will not be attending the Nursing Fundemental class on the the 3rd but will be joining the class on the first day of Pharmacoloy on the 11th. I will be in NOLA next week to hopefully put the housing issue to bed. I will in NOLA around the 8th or 9th. I have an interview in Northern Indiana on the morning of the 7th. If anyone else needs the notes, please let me know. As for the note from the person in the EJGH class. HELLO - how is the team doing this term. I recently got a note from the Social/Philanthropic chair. As for the comments about the notes and tests she is absolutely correct. To get a heads up on things I strongly recommend taking very good notes with the PPT presentations and running through the questions. There are things said in lecture that are not in the book or in the slides. One of the comments made in class that I totally disregarded and it was later on the test was a comment about heart paitienct on Nitric drugs coming into the ER saying Oh my Head. It was on the test. Rad up. Moving into the test two chapters and should have them done by the end of christmas day. Test one is the easiest of the tests. Test two and three arent hard just a bit different in terms of the types of questions. Much more on contrainactors, indicators, cause and effects, antidotes etc. Since my last entry I had a nephew who was killed in a car accident - it was the largest funeral I have ever been to. He was a former quarterback at a local country school and was recently in the Air Force. His dad is a member of the Fort Wayne fire department and his grandfather is a local commissioner and the owner of the local EMS service. The line to get into the wake and give your condolences to the family was over 4 hours long. It was a very sad moment for our entire family. Cam was a great kid and one our our fondest memories was swapping cars with him. We gave him our convertible mini cooper for his Monster Truck. Im not who had the most fun - him or us. Any way merry christmas and happy new years. I visit my mother and mother in law and delivered the christmas cookies etc. Both are ornery as ever so I know they are doing well. Have a happy holidays.
  5. From a cost/safety standpoint the Metairie location is great. I might end up with an apartment up there simply due to cost. Tulane is next to the french quarter so the cost is very high. As for the campus, there are no Campus's. Both systems I believe have the same group of instructors the bigger difference is where the clinicals are held. Traffic is bad at both. Parking is free at both. The campus consists of some offices a classroom etc. I Dont know what Tulane has since I start at EJGH. EJ has a good computer room with printers several offices and a very large instuction room for up to about 40-45 which we had filled and a conference room. It also had an lab.clinical room that had 8-10 workcenters/dummies. there are nice 1 bedroom / studios that are 430-470 sq ft less then 1 mile from that location.
  6. Well, hello again everyone, the past two weeks weeks have been kind of rough. My 80 yo mom was in the hospital again for another infection. She couldnt use her legs at all. I put my CNA knowledge to work and helped her out for about 3 days each of the past two weeks. We also lost our HS football star nephew to a driver that fell asleep at the wheel. It was the largest funeral I ever attended. We had over 100 firefighters at the wake and the fort Wayne Fire Dept bag pipes at the end of the service. He was a good kid and a good man. He had a finance and a child on way. It was very sad. This week is about the respiratory system and finding an apartment. I have a few options - a few in Metaire and a few in the QTR and a couple along the St. Charles and tulane area. I also have to write and send my "Calkins Chronicles" The first one was written in I think 1991 while on vacation in Cancun. This year I am hoping to have it completed by Sunday and sent the 100+ people that are on my "card list". Coming from a large family and having over 60 1st cousins and a ton of brothers in the fraternity calls for a ton of mailings. Two years ago, I decided that the more distant friends and family would only get a email with the Chronicles included. As for a few of the questions, Books, If you are registered, you could go directly to the Chimes Bookstore and they will have a listing of the books and you can order them directly from them and they will ship them within a day or two. The books that I got from them in August are: Main Text: Clinical Drug therapy - Rationales for Nursing Practice 9th Edition. By Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins Suplement : Study Guide for Abrams' Clinical Drug therapy - An inch thick soft cover full of test questions and different formats from fill in the blank, multiple choice and the NClEX style of "all that apply" type of questions. Alll answers are in the book. Main text: Dosage Calculations 8th Edition. By Gloria D. Pickar. Paperback with dosage calculation quesitons and tons of visual aids. Not sure you absolutely need it. There are several chapters and example pages that can be used. If you have one book for a group of 3-4 that would probably be good. There some abbreviations, equivlents, etc. on the front cover that is helpful. Reference: Taber's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary. Not sure if this is needed if you have an app on your phone to one of the online medical dictionaries. Are you OK after Pharm? Im not sure you could say that the rest is easy going. I am hearing fundementals is also a bit rough and after that a ton of care plans have to be written. I've seen the schedule for fundimentals and I think the amount of reading seems to be just and high with the similar speed. It looks like all of us should be reading about 2-3 chapters every day to keep up with the current class requirements. If possible we all should read the material prior to the lecture.
  7. Ok fellow tulane January, Just remember we will be covering 15-20 chapters for each test. Test one takes two weeks since that also includes most of the instruction for dosage calculations. There is also an ATI system, If you have used blackboard you may want to get some instruction on day 1 out side of class. Also there is something called ATI it takes your testing process. The tests for Pharma are only practice. The real Prama test is take in late 2nd term or early 3rd term. Out fees for the first semester were about $4200. The Second term I think was higher $6500 and the 3rd semester was about 4000 or 5000. As for apts. There are a bunch of places with a few miles of the tulane medical center. If you dont know where it is, it is next door to the superdome. There are some warehouse apartments that are nice and near the hospital but they are about 1000 to 1400 for a two bedroom . I found a few places in the Qtr but they are $600-$800 for a small (300 sq ft) apt. The rest of the places are either apartments 1-2 blocks off St. Charles (nice area) or near Tulane/Loyola - but those are more room for rent then actual apartments. There are a few one bedroom apts that I lived looked at was going to move in at the end of the semester run on TOnti There is one on Lake in Meterare and one about 1 mile from East Jefferson General Hospital. They had 1 brs for $450 per month will to sign a 6 month student lease then month to month after. My landlord was a crook that I will probably have to take to court to get my security and last days of rent along with my furniture that I left there. I didnt have a lease and the prick is try to charge me not only the secruity and the last 10 days of rent, but also additional money to change a step clean fees of $10 per day and money to fix a pump. The cleaning, pump and etc. are cmpletely disputable since they did happend and he said he doesnt have to share the info with me. they usually talk about uniforms after the 2nd test. There is no reason to get the shoes and 150 dollars in uniforms if your are not progressing. The showes have to be all white and cannot have any canvas on them including the tongue. Not to many size 13/14 white shoes out there. You might want to start looking. There are some mens tennis shoes that qualify. Most are a form of crocs. Kenner is another 5-8 miles from the school. The highway from Tulane to a mess in the morning west bound. Not sure how east bound going downtown is. If I cant score a rental more near the school will be looking at Tonti in Metarie for a one bedroom. The one nearest EJGH dint have a pool. the one on Lake had a pool. As for working, I think you would be able to have a prn type job especially weekends. In funds I not sure one you are in clinicals. Anyone hit me up if you would like to share an apartment. You have to comfortable to a gay roomate. I have a committed and civially united partner for over 12 years and he will be coming to NOLA every two or three weeks. He will be spending a lot more time in June - early August when he is off for the summer. So now, 1) do you know the difference between generic and brand names, How about who or what chooses the genaric name and brand name. Do you what the adrenergic, antiadrenergic, colenergic and anticolenergic drugs do? Need to know all that for the first test if I recall. compeleted all of chapter 1-5 and also 16-19. have to finish chapter 20 and 21. and then take all the questions in the book, in the study guide and in the Online examples on The Point which you get in the book and then the test questions on the ATI study guide. Different the others. Haave good one. Hope all are ready and psyched. Im asking my partner for white shoes and good stethiscope for christmas this year and maybe a inside cabin on a cruise to the Mexico. we did that 3-4 years ago and had a blast. If anyone is coming into the nola for the orientation you can get a hotel in or near the qtr on priceline for about 45-60 per night. met a few of my class mates before and after the orientation. Parking is the problem. You can try to park at different places, but I would recommend one of the central parking lots one to two blocks off of the qtr. The hotel was charging $30/day or over night. You can park at the central lot for about 8 dollars. They werent attended were within two blocks of the hotel and you had in out without have to pay extra. If you are driving in, you will be using the car for the orientation. I might come in for some of the days since I havent been to the tulane med center. There will be free parking for student near the class area per Dr. chauvin. AJC
  8. Thats true, but C's end at 80.
  9. I forgot to answer your 2nd question regarding working. There were several students in the class that were single parents and at least 5-6 that I knew had other jobs. One was a bartender near tulane and a few worked at the hostipal as CNA's. One was an employee but didnt take any hours until after they got through Pharma. I made the mistake about not moving to the 2nd or 3rd test material until after the previous section test. MISTAKE. The last two sections move at the rate of about 20 chapters per week. It is almost impossible to keep up. The first test was given after about 3 days of test two material was given. Albert also had a great idea record the lectures so you can re-listen to it later. There are some comment made in class that will be on the test. If you disregard them, you may not recall them while taking the test.
  10. The book noted above is correct. I was in the class with her. The class is not "easy". There is a ton of reading. I was in the same class in east Met and got a 79.6 so will be heading back to NOLA in January to retake. The book is Clinical Drug Therapy - rationales for Nursing Practice Ninth Edition. You should be able to buy your books online at Chimes Bookstore - based out of Baton Rouge. They shipped the books literatally within a few days. There is a CD in the book and a scratch off password that are needed if you want some extra help with problems etc Unless you really understand drugs already, go with her recommendation. I got A's in Anatomy and Physiology, and ended up behind the gun. Anatomy was all memorization. With Pharm, there isnt the amount of memorization except what are the effects of the difference drug classifications. You have to know and understand the classifications of drugs, the primary drugs of each classification and the indicators, contra-indicators, the effects, and side effects and the antidotes for over doeses or toxicity etc. The class is not taught in a direct chapter order. I do have copies of the old class notes. The class notes are either word or Power Point presentations. Send me an email at my scn name at the yahoo. if you would like copies. The personal notes are not on the slides. Typically I would print them at 3 slides per page in the notes fashion. That way you can add your class notes directly on the page with the notes and save 2/3 of the paper. There are several things discussed in class that are not clear in the book. Additionally there is also a book for drug calculations. The medical dictionary isnt necessary if you have an internet phone or I phone with a medical app on it. Several in class had it and it gave you really good results and mobile so they could pull them up in class real quickly. The dictionary was good for me only if there was a term that I didnt understand. Medical dosage is 5-15% of each of the three tests. In Fundamental I you have to get a 100% on the dosage calculations to progress. I believe you get three attempts. That was the only part I aced. Are any of you guys moving to NOLA from out of town. I think Im the oldest in the class. 45 and still active. Have a BSIE and currently interviewing for a few plant manager positions. Have been doing that the past 6-8 years Another note. There are a few areas/chapters of the book that arent covered if at all in the class. After 6-8 hours of Cardio, the chapter on Lipids and some of the viral issues were covered extremely quickly and briefly. The chapter on lipids wasnt covered at all but with a few issues the following day. There are only three tests. They are not really cummulative but you need to understand the concepts in ANS and the early chapters to get through CNS, GI etc. Based on the class timing, the 3rd test has the least amount of time between chapters. Prior to coming back to class, I will reading each chapter and doing the questions at the end of each chapter. The only questions in the book with answers are the Knowledge Application question internal to each chapter. Answer to the NCLEX questions have answers and rational on the CD that comes with the book. I dont know where the answers are for the Short Answer Exercises at the end of each question, but most you can find in the chapter. The last think is NOTE CARDS. Start them now! I didnt do the note cards until too late. Even though you may not thick you need them, they help you retain the information by righting it the 2nd or 3rd time. Most people had their personal note cards and also a spread sheet of the drugs. We also had a guy who had been in Medical school and he truely understood the processes by which the drugs worked. Albert was a great help. PS you would also set up a study group ASAP. You all probably have and orientation next month and then we start with what I call Nursing 101. Not sure if I will sit through that again since I passed that one, but that would be a good place to dicide who will be in your study group. Again if you want to get copies of the notes/presentations, please send me an email - same scn name at the yahoo.
  11. Hey everyone, I would definitely get the books and start reading and doing all the questions at the end of each chapter. I didnt do well enough to progress and have to retake the class in January. Im looking forward to the class and actually understanding some of the key concepts. I will try to down load the class notes and get them on a system other then where they are currently located. If I get this done, I could send them to you. There is a file for each section, maybe 1 large file for 4-5 chapters. Ie. CNS drugs is in 2 sections I believe but it covers about 5 or 6 chapters in the book. I will try to attach the schedule that was used in the fall term. It will help with understanding the flow of the class. Send me a note at my screen name at the yahoo
  12. Are the pharma notes still available? I am order the pharma book on line later this week and would like a copy of the notes. How do you send a PM on this website?
  13. The class at Ivy Tech is titled PHIL22000F - Philosophy of Religion
  14. I would take a look at your local Comm College. My current religion class is on line and involves writing a two page report each week. It is an 8 week acccelerated course for the 2nd half of the year. I would defintely look there. I would also check out Ivy Tech Comm College. Their distance learning program is pretty extensive. My base is fort wayne but my two online classes have prof. in South Bend and in Marion.
  15. I did my 2nd go at looking on Craigs list under shared housing. Will be calling the EJGH OLOL office tomorrow to find our more sources. Ive also looked around the Tulane area on line. It seems there are a ton more "student" housing even though Im almost old enough to be their parent. Also trying to find out what text for pharmacology. I figured what the heck, I only have 4 classes for the summer and will be starting my BIO Nutrition class at the end of June. Just started my 3rd week in the two classroom classes - finishing up early/mid july the two internext courses that I started today finish up 1st week in August. We just moving from the big house (4k sq ft) to 1.5k sq ft. The move was a lot harder the building process.
