Rate of sexual harassment occurrences at a hospital?
Hello! I have a fairly loaded question that I'm hoping will receive helpful and realistic feedback from a variety of experienced nurses. I have recently been accepted to an RN program in St. Pete, FL and though I'm really excited, I have some concerns about the workplace environment for someone such as myself. I'm a 25 yr old recently engaged female that likes to take care of herself. My fiance works as an AA (anesthesiologist assistant) at a hospital and has been working for 3 years at the same hospital and told me about the amount of sexual harassment that occurs especially towards new young women such as myself, regardless of whether they're married or not. He tells me that there is little anyone can do about it because that's the kind of common behavior (slapping other people's behinds, making forward comments, showing pictures on cellphones of sexual content, etc.) that occurs at all hospitals. Most times, according to him, new young females are powerless against this and if they try to report it, could easily get fired (I suppose if the harasser is of a higher authoritative position). I have no idea about this kind of environment, I'm just starting out, I know that I'm a mature person that doesn't put up with nonsense such as this. So what I'm asking all of the nurses out there is, in your experience, has there been a high rate of sexual harassment among coworkers in your workplace? Are there effective protocols to report this? Is there a REALISTIC way for someone such as myself to avoid becoming a victim of this? Thanks!

Spring 2011 SPC hopefulls come on in!!
The VA hospital is offering: - 12 additional seats for the nursing program - You would have your clinicals there - Be able to apply for a student-tech job after your first semester of nursing school They're not offering any scholarships, guaranteed job contracts or any $.

Spring 2011 SPC hopefulls come on in!!
BTW, did any other Spring 2011 applicants attend the Northside/Baypines VA Hospital Interviews Nov 3? (It was at HEC) I interviewed with Northside and they said they were going to get in touch with all of the students that were interviewed at the BEGINNING of this week. I was told by Tracy that she would email those who didn't get in and personally call those who did get accepted. I'm very anxious! Has anyone heard from Northside?

Spring 2011 SPC hopefulls come on in!!
Hey VKF3, I attended the EAYL meeting too. I was told they'll start calling people the first week of Oct. I didn't get accepted into the SPC program (only a 3.5 GPA and outside of Pinellas) so I attended the EAYL orientation and interview. I thought it went pretty well, I told the person who was interviewing me that I was EXTREMELY flexible (seeing as how all I'm doing is going to school right now) and basically expressed how badly I wanted to be a nurse! Unfortunately my only experiences in the medical field are from volunteering for 6 months at a hospital my Sr. high school year and taking Phlebotomy at PHCC (along with clinicals) LOL hopefully they consider me! I'll let anyone know as soon (if I do) recieve a phone call for the 2nd interview! Good luck everyone.

SPC - EAYL Interview Time Lapse
Oh awesome, thanks! Btw, I'm trying to find out right now where to get the SPC Hospital Expansion Programs Requirements Checklist? I want to get that done ASAP! Also, I know they want you to bring transcripts and resumes, do the transcripts have to be official? And are they only interested in seeing transcripts from schools you've gone to that have health/science related credits? Thanks!!!

SPC - EAYL Interview Time Lapse
Does anyone out there know what the general time frame is from the day you go to a job fair for the SPC Earn As You Learn Program to the time of your first scheduled interview? I understand that the next job fair is Sept 22 2010 (for their RN program) but I'm leaving for a trip to NY on Sept 23 and I arrive back on the 27th. How long does it take till you hear back from them again? Thanks!!!

SPC - Competitive Admissions
whooa wait, SPC doesn't consider residency an admissions factor? Not that I want to question the validity of your statement, but is this something that an advisor told you? I downloaded one of the Nursing brochures off of their website and it said on there that Pinellas county residents get first priority on SPECIALTY programs which I have no idea what that means. Either way, I'm preparing to meet competition from all angles lol.

Wonderful, thanks, I truly appreciate it!

SPC - Competitive Admissions
Interesting, so all you need to have finished are the Pre-Reqs that are listed on the SPC Nursing page and on the hospital's website? (assuming they're the same). Do I need to apply for EAYL directly through their webpage? Sorry if these questions sound repetitive. I guess I just want to be clear on all of my options so I can take full advantage of them! :)

SPC - Competitive Admissions
Thanks so much for replying, I truly appreciate the feedback! Yes, my advisor also told me that I could apply after I complete Anatomy and Phys. 2 this semester because it's my last "Pre-Req" so I think I'll go forth and try that and just apply again after completing Micro Bio (my last support class). Yeah, the EAYL program does sound pretty awesome. I wouldn't mind the 2 year contract afterwards, personally. Hopefully I won't be applying with too many Pinellas county residents! Ha. Thank you again.

SPC - Competitive Admissions
Hello, I'm a student at SPC right now and I'm planning on enrolling to the nursing program @ SPC after I complete MicroBio this fall. I have a couple of concerns...I've been speaking with advisors at SPC (met with them twice at the HEC campus already) and used the GPA calculator on their page to figure out where I will be after I get A's in the last classes that I need and they tell me that they have been accepting students between a 3.5 and 3.7 GPA, however, I keep hearing horror stories about how they reject students with a 3.8 GPA (might as well be a doctor, if you ask me). Nevertheless, I fully understand the importance of getting A's Question #1: I will have completed my Pre-Entry Requirements, General Ed and Support classes by the time I apply. If things go as planned I will have a 3.566 GPA by then. Is that competitive enough? If it's not, I'm considering writing a letter to the Dean to retake my "B" classes. Question #2: I'm currently a Hernando county resident and will be when I apply. How much does residency play a role in the selection process @ SPC? Question #3: One of my friends has told me to research the Earn As You Learn program and I asked an advisor at HEC about it, and she said that you still have to be accepted to the RN program @ SPC before being considered for the EAYL program. Is this true? It appears (after reading some threads on here) that they still accept students after a series of interviews and that they pay attention to things besides GPA? I'm a bit confused about the details for EAYL If someone out there is kind and determined enough to answer these questions, I'd be forever grateful!
