  1. Hi Mr. Chris, My stepmum is a PA at the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust - this is the trust that took over the running of Warlingham Hospital. She used to work at the hospital too. About 5 years ago, the hospital was closed down and turned into "Great Park," a housing development. The patients were dispersed and the Trust is now run from Croydon. I'll ask my stepmum how you could go about contacting the staff from Warlingham Hospital. Regards, Julie
  2. Hi there jusjan, I know what you're going through - I'm 39 and I've spent the last 8 years as an accountant (plus 2 years to get my MBA). As soon as I got my first job with a prestigious firm I realized I had made a big mistake. But I kept at it because I thought that climbing the corporate ladder, making partner, and making lots of money was the most important thing. I know now that I was completely wrong - the work was so boring to me and the politics and backbiting was vicious. I'm sure not all accounting jobs are like that, though. I too have always been fascinated by medicine and healing, but I never got the chance to pursue science at school. However, I recently went back to school and took Anatomy and Physiology and it was the most fascinating course I've ever taken. Unfortunately, I moved to the UK a few months ago and I've learned I can't get into any nursing programs here for 3 years due to residency requirements. So I'll have to wait until my husband is ready to move back to the US before starting a program. Probably the best thing would be to shadow some nurses, (and some accountants!), take an evening course, but set a date, make your decision and go for it!!!! Good luck!!!:)
  3. http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/news/articles/10475064?source=Evening%20Standard Nurse 'tried to kill patients' By Valentine Low, Evening Standard 28 April 2004 A hospital nurse was so obsessed with "ruthless efficiency" that she tried to kill four elderly patients to free their beds, a court heard today. Barbara Salisbury was even heard urging one patient "give in, it's time to go", as she administered an overdose, prosecuting barrister Robin Spencer QC told the jury at Chester Crown Court. Determined to get patients off her ward quickly - alive or dead - she "overstepped the line between humane nursing and callous dispatch", taking it upon herself to hasten the death of the four very ill patients at Leighton Hospital, Crewe, Mr Spencer said. Salisbury, 47, from Pontybodkin, north Wales, who was working as a ward sister, denies four counts of attempted murder against Reuben Thompson, 81, Frank Owen, 92, James Byrne, 76, and Frances May Taylor, 88. The alleged offences took place between 1999 and 2001. Mr Spencer said Salisbury tried to kill Mr Byrne and Mrs Taylor by "unnecessary and inappropriate" administration of diamorphine. The court heard she was seen repeatedly pressing the booster button on the device delivering the drug to Mr Byrne and telling him: "Give in, it's time to go." Mr Spencer said Salisbury tried to kill Mr Owen and Mr Thompson by lying them on their backs to drown in their own secretions. In Mr Owen's case, she told a fellow nurse: "With any luck his lungs will fill with fluid and he will die." Salisbury was reported to police by other nurses at the hospital. Mr Spencer told the jury: " Barbara Salisbury arrogated to herself the right to decide when [patients] should die. "She does not suggest these were attempts at mercy killing. The allegations, she says, are quite simply untrue." He added: "If the patient could be made well enough to be discharged she would aim for that, if not she would hasten death. One way or another she wanted these patients off her ward." The trial continues.
  4. I didn't know you needed two years experience to sit the NCLEX? Is this just for California? Tamar ???
  5. I am trying to decide where to take my training. I can't find any comparisons of the quality of teaching and practical training at the various London area colleges. I am interested in adult nursing, and would like to get the most out of my studies. My questions are twofold: A)Can anyone recommend the teaching at one of the following colleges? B) Have you worked in any of the associated hospitals? How do they treat student nurses? How is the range and quality of the clinical placements? 1) City University (St. Barts & Royal London) 2) Kings College (Guys & St. Thomas Hospital or Bromley Hospital) 3) South Bank Uni (Guys & St. Thomas Hospital) 4) Kingston Uni (St. Georges, St. Helier Hospital, Epsom General) 5) University of Surrey (Redhill Hospital) Sorry for so many questions and Thanks everyone! :)
  6. I have a complicated situation and wondered if anyone had some insight for me. I am a dual UK/USA citizen who was educated to A level in the UK but has lived for the last 16 years in the USA. I just returned to the UK, and would like to take a degree in nursing. However, I have read that there is some sort of 3 year UK residency requirement for degree courses. Is this true in all cases? Also, assuming I was eligible for a degree place, would it be too late to apply for September 2004 entry? Your help is greatly appreciated. Tamar :)
