New RN, New to Houston, and No Job
I am a LPN and have been in Houston now for about 4 years. My first job here was hospital and hated it. Now I work in Home Health and love the flexibility it offers without the micro management...I hope to start RN in the next year or so and look to home health as the most flexible work environment for me anyways. Not sure if this helps. Good Luck to you!

What is included in Report?
Hi all, This may be a really stupid question but what is or "should be" included in a shift/verbal report? I know things like: Age/sex Dx Problems Procedures Complications Last Know Vitals and Abnormals for the Day I/O's Any PRN Meds. Given and Any Relief Noted? Doctor Contacts/Calls Assessment Findings etc... Labs and any Abnormals (and Labs that pertain to the Admitting Dx) Status of Procedures and Outcomes And any items that were not completed on your shift.. Am I missing something.....just trying to get the report thing down in a logical order so when I give report it flows smoothly.....LOL. Thanks, T:rolleyes:

Took the NCLEX-PN Test Today....
Hello all, I took my test today and the puter shut off at 85.....When my screen went dark, I wanted to scream and beg for more questions. I left the testing center feeling like I didn't know anything at all. Either I did really bad or really good....not sure what to make of it. I got back to my hotel room from the test today and proceeded to cry my eyes out . Alot of the information that I studied wasn't even on the exam....:uhoh21: . I just don't know what to think about it. I will just have to wait for the quick results online (will get those in two days ). Now just have to hope and pray that all is well....Thanks to everyone for supporting me through this...:) T.W., LVN (hopefully....lol)

Intense Fear keeping Me from getting a Job?
Hi all, I am a new GVN, and I take my boards next week. I am intensely afraid that I have not prepared myself enough for this exam. I am using the Saunders Review Book and doing the C.D. During school, I have never made below a B in any class or on any exam. I have confidence in myself that I believe I can pass boards.....but my biggest fear is yet to come. I have this overwhelming fear of causing harm to a patient. That alone just paralyzes me and makes me diaphoretic. During Med. pass in clinicals, my sense of alertness was very sharp....especially when it came to meds. and watching for reactions, and pt. status and assessments etc. I am currently looking for a job also, but I am afraid because this is all new to me and I am afraid of doing the wrong thing, losing my license over something stupid, or something happening (a code perhaps) and I freeze up in the critical moments..... My question is should these feelings be enough to drive me out of the profession before I even begin? The anxiety of this career change is intense and some people have told me that it will go away with experience. I haven't even entered the hospital setting yet and already I feel like I am inadequate, weighed down, "green", and scared poopless....lol.... Any words of advice are greatly appreciated, I feel like I need a good :crying2: Thanks you all for listening to me...:)

Taking NCLEX-PN on Jan. 25th!
Hello all, Yup, called and scheduled my test date. Wow, seems so far off....lol. :uhoh21: Just graduated LVN program last week and was going to look for a job. My DH told me not to work until after the NCLEX. So we agreed, and I am going to start reviewing next week. Please pray for me....LOL. I passed the program with flying colors, but lack complete confidence in myself. I do not have test anxiety. I only fear the prioritizing and the critical thinking type of questions so they are my weakness. Time to pray harder than before and keep looking up! You guys are terrific! Take care and Happy Holidays to All!

LPN and the NPA for Texas???
Hello all, I know this may make me seem like an idiot, but I will throw it out there anyway. :) I am a future LPN (hopefully) living in Texas. I have downloaded the NPA for my state and have been reading it for a while now. Now, my question and statement is that I still don't really know what LPN's "CAN" and "CANNOT" do under their scope of practice! I feel like a complete idiot and very unsure of what I can and cannot do... I know that I can't hang blood, delegate nursing judgement, I can't push IV meds....but that is all that I can think of, and there has to be more....Please help! The other thing is that I am not sure of what I am allowed to do without calling the doctor. I am afraid of doing something and not notifying the right people or when to notify them. Man I am an idiot, but any advice will be of a great help. :uhoh21:

Meds. to stop the Heart?
Hello all, I am doing an assignment for my Pharm. class, and I am not having much luck with finding the answer to my question. While lecturing about Cardiac Meds. my Instructor asked us to research what medications are administered to stop the Heart during surgery. I am not sure what type of surgery she is talking about, but if anyone knows of what drugs are used to stop the heart can you please let me know? (Besides undiluted IV Potassium....LOL.):chuckle

Head to Toe Assessments?
Hello all, I received my first patient assignment the other day (geriatric patient). I have been doing research on his condition, illness, meds....etc. I have to do my first head to toe assessment on Tuesday and I am sooooooo nervous. I feel like I will forget everything that I have learned and will choke miserably!!!!! I want to do my assessment in a way that has minimal movement for the patient, but things are getting jumbled in my head. I need an assessment that is quick, but thorough.:uhoh21: This is my greatest fear.....any advice? How to keep it simple and short? How to get over the anxiety? Student Vocational Nurse in my 1st. Semester looking for advice...Thanks!

Education or None at All?
i have my schedule of my classes, but no textbooks. i have been researching info. based on what i took notes on in the orientation, and by the title of the courses. i don't have my textbooks yet because i am not paying for them so i cannot get books until my registration date. i have been studying nusing basics (vitals...and fundamentals and theories). i have dabbled in care plans and have brushed up on my calculations, and conversions of drug dosages. i have researched the essence of patient care and what it takes to be a nurse. all of my resources have come from borrowed books from family and friends. my math materials are what i have found and printed on the internet (i have lots of credible sites bookmarked.) also i have found anatomy drawings to study and sites for online flash cards of med terms and abbreviations. i am not sure if i am missing anything? if i am can someone point it out to me? thanks.... :wink2:

Education or None at All?
Hello, and at this time I would like to thank you in advance for reading/replying to my post. I have a question for the Nursing Educators. I have been doing alot of research on Nursing trying to prepare myself for the Spring admission. I have no medical background or previous experience. Do you prefer a student to try and educate themselves prior to starting Nursing school, or do you like them to come in your class/facility as a "blank slate"? Do Educators like to mold the "clay" themselves and teach the student their way of thinking? Thanks again to all who reply... :)
