I am 54 years old and thinking of getting into being an EKG Technician. I took care of my mother for the past 10 years and now want to get into the job market. Is an EKG Technician a good job field? How is the job advancements and the salary?

What is the usual time to retire? Some say 67, 68, 69, or even 70. With so many starting as a nurse later in life and then they work longer and retire later in life. What about you? What is your opinion?

In two weeks I am going for my certification for a nurse's aide. I think one of the tasks will be denture cleaning. When you leave the bed-ridden patient to clean the dentures, do you take off your gloves and then lower the bed, raise the safety railings, and give them their call button and then put on new gloves to clean the dentures?

I have been on All Nurses since 2011 and I have gone back and forth between going for my LPN or Medical Coding. I had a conflict because I am 50 years old and I took care of my mother for 10 years and she passed away in 2010. I took a Nursing Aide training course through the Red Cross to see how I did with interacting with patients. I did great academically and with conversing with the patients but when it came to the plastic gloves I did horribly. The Red Cross was very strict with changing your gloves after doing the different steps of a procedure. With one task you can be changing your gloves up to 5 or 6 times. After the 2nd time of changing gloves my hands were so sweating that it was very hard for me to put on new fresh gloves and they said that powder was not permitted because some patients are allergic to powder. The instructors, who were RNs, said because of my difficulty with the gloves I wouldn't be a good LPN. I should be able to put on and off the gloves very fast and because of my difficulty I would put patient's lives in danger. Are there any LPN jobs that doesn't require so much glove changing?

Hi I am in a Red Cross Nursing Aide program while I am doing my prerequisites for the LPN Program for next year. The instructors, who are RNs, said I was too anxious and couldn't keep up with the fast-paced teaching of the course. They said I should reconsider my choice of becoming a LPN. What do you think? If I can't keep up with a Nursing Aide course do you think I have a chance with LPN? By the way I am 50 years old and I will be 52 when I finish LPN Program if I get in.

i think when I actually need or perform the procedure then I psyched myself out and screw things up. I know people will say don't psych yourself out or calm down but it is very hard.

My College Career Advisor told me to become a Nurse's Aide while doing my prerequisites for the LPN Program. I am doing very will with my academics. I got a B in Anatomy and Physiology and an A in Psychology I. In my Nurse's Aide training program through the Red Cross I am not doing so good. I am passing my written tests but the clinical I am not doing so good. The instructors, 2 RNs, say I am too anxious and my hands sweat terribly in the plastic gloves and when I have to change them 4 or 5 times during a procedure It is very hard for me to put on the gloves after the 2nd time changing them. The instructors think I should rethink my career plans of becoming a LPN and maybe think of becoming a medical coder, which was my original plan. What do you think?

Has anyone use the plastic gloves and did your duty and when you take off the gloves the inside is soaking wet inside. Is this normal?

Thanks everyone for all of your positive comments. I am taking Psychology I online this summer and Biology I and Psychology 2 in the fall 2013. When I become a LPN I am planning to work 2 years as a LPN and then go for my RN. I know my mother would be proud of me and smiling down from heaven.

Hi Everyone I am 50 and I am doing prerequisites to go for a LPN Program at my community college. I will be 51 when I get into the program and 52 when I graduate. I took care of my mother, who was a LPN, because of COPD and Asthma for 10 years and thought I should go for nursing since I was the caregiver to my mother for so long. I think my mother is looking down from heaven and smiling.

Hi Darlene It sounds like we are in the same boat. I took care of my mother until she passed away and now takes care of my father. I wanted to go for LPN so I could have a good career and room to grow and do something I love too. Lets stay in touch and give each other support. I read that you didn't do so well with Math. There are some online math tutoring and may be at your college. Good Luck!!!

I am thinking to work until I am 68 years old. With how Social Security you need all the savings you can get. I don't think I will mind working that long because I love nursing.

I want to try to get into the LPN Program for the fall and I am wondering if I am doing good enough in Anatomy and Physiology to get in? I always wanted to get into the LPN Program since I took care of my mother for 10 years until 2010 when she passed away. Even her doctor said I would make a good nurse. Am I smart enough though? I never took biology or chemistry in high school. I am having financial difficulities and I am wondering if I can take biology and chemistry for the prerequisite courses online? What type of biology and chemistry classes should I take online? Will colleges accept the online courses for the LPN program?

I live in Lynn,MA and I havent worked since 1991. I got a inner ear infection and developed vertigo and I finally was getting back on my feet in the year of 2000 and then my mother developed asthma and COPD. I stayed home taking care of my mother until August 2010 when she passed away. I am now 49 years old and I want to get into the medical field. I liked the medical part of taking care of my mother. Medical assistant will take 6 months and Lpn will take 10 months through MPI in Malden. If I take LPN I will be 50 years old and I am afraid no one will hire me. Which way should I go medical assistant or LPN?

I have gone to medical assistant training and I work as a phlebotomy/EKG Tech. My question is if I want to become a LPN do I have to go through all the courses or can my work experience help me in not taking some of the courses.

I am 48 years old and the last 6 years I have been taking care of my mother who had asthma and COPD. I was like a nurse to her making sure she took her medication, her inhalers, did breathing exercises with her and knew when she needed to go to the hospital when her breathing was not good. I also did the housework, errands, house budget, and paid the bills. My mother died this past August. After my mother died I wanted to go back to work but had alot of negative responses from my father who mostly said I was too old to go back to work. I used to do dental claims processing for blue cross and blue shield but I see that kind of jobs are becoming obsolete. I liked taking care of my mom and thought I would get into medical assiting or become an ekg/phlebotomy tech. Am I too old to start either of these careers. Does anyone know how the salary is?
