heartbroken
Hello to all nurses. Your insight will be much appreciated. Please help me sort this out. I worked in the same home for over a year and became very attatched to the client. The mother thought i took very good care of her child. It seemed we got along well except for what I consider unreasonable scheduling requests. Such as I work every Saturday night instead of every other. And wanting me to change my work days and times at the drop of a hat. Wanting me to work on my weekend off ect. I was gracious in meeting most requests. When I had to say no,she became angry and got in my face saying well then she would find someone who would and she wanted what she was entitled to. She called the angency requesting other staff to meet her needs. Of course I feel very hurt and used and now suffer the grief and loss of not ever seeing the child i so much enjoyed and bonded with. The agency said this kind of thing happens alot. It would have been nice to know that to begin with. This was my first position in home care so I did not know what to expect. i think I learned some valuable lessons but the hard way.Perhaps it is best to diversify and not work full time in the same home so you don't get so attatched to the child. Also, the family tries to take advantage because they feel you are their nurse. They seem to not understand that it is primarily a business/professional relationship and you work and are paid through the employer and have to follow their rules and guidelines. It all becomes too personal. And when your nursing care is free/at no cost to the family, the tend to view it as an expectation,an entitlement, and do not see the full value of what they are recieving and that someone is paying the cost such as the taxpayers, including the loyal nurse taking care of their child. In short, as long as they are getting everything they want, all is good and in the end they really don't care about you or see that others have the same needs in life that they do. They just want what they want when they want it and then more, more, more. I am sure this is not true of everyone. This was my experience first time out and it really hurt. it would be helpful if the agencies would brief you on these things in the beginning. i don't want to get that close to any child or family again. Thanks for listening by reading and responding. i am having a really hard time getting over this. BlissMissRN

Home Care Fraud - How to escape.
So is it fraud if the client has an able and competent parent in providing their care who is home all day chatting up the nurse and they are recieving 40hr per week in home care for thier child. Plus respite hours. if they are home all day, then why should the taxpayers be paying for this. would love to know of your experiences and your thoughts on the matter.Blissmissrn

Free Time for Doctors Visits?
Sorry, need to clarify. The nurse is paid the hourly rate for all time except for time client is being seen by the doctor, therapist, clinician. it was explained to me that Title 19 will not pay for both at the same time. For example, if the doctor visit was 1/2 hr in duration. I would be paid for 7 1/2 hrs. I could work an extra half hour if I wanted to make up the difference. BlissMissRN

Free Time for Doctors Visits?
Hello to All, I really enjoy allnurses and wish I would have discovered it sooner. This is my first thread. All replies will be appreciated. How do you handle it when a pediatric client has frequent doctor visits, some of which are out of town? The agency I work for leaves it up to the discretion of the nurse to accompany the parent or not. It is not a have too part of the job because the nurse is not paid for her time during the visit to any doctor, therapist, or clinician. The parent has the expectation that the nurse goes to numerous visits. It could be anywhere from 4 to 10 per month. Ranging from 1/2 hour to 2 hours. I was rudely told by the mother that I was getting paid until the doctor came in so I needed to hold the child and entertain them in the exam room while waiting for the clinician because she was going to read a magazine. She stated she wanted what she was entitled to. Some times we wait an hour for the doctor to come in so this is not an easy task. I did not go on all the visits as I explained that I am working for a living and have to limit the amt. of free time I give. And, most people don't give any free time on a paid job. This caused some difficulties and the parent eventually informed the agency that she wanted a nurse that would accompany her on all visits. Also, I had misgivings about being in their car in event of an accident and what a legal mess that would be. Who knows if these clients even have a drivers license or car insurance. Do we have the right to ask to see proof? Do any of you nurse give free time? BlissMissRN
