As Madwife stated there is no problem you can get MMR and other immunisations done at the medical for a charge, the GP should do MMR(tell GP what you need it for) or try your Hospitals Occupational Health/Vaccination clinics. Hope this helps

UK training = dangerous?
Very True!! as a mentor and having completed PK2000 I had to tell/guide students time after time what was needed for their EBL and their PBL as they did not have a clue!! Also had to teach/mentor as it would be a bad reflection on me and my practice (plus I did not want them injuring me , themselves or the patient(s) ) Nov

UK training = dangerous?
Oh I do agree with all thats been said ! but since i was 1 of the new pk2000(1994) i worked my Butt off and it was more staff encouragement and willingness to teach. It was hard work and I did nights weekends etc and had 2 yong children(i don't know how I survived!!) But it has paid off-7yrs+ later i am a F/G-gradeSenRN&RM(depending on where u go and afc), and when i had students on placement, I made them work:p and i think alot of staff are just fed-up with teaching students who show no interest at all in clinical skills just quote from text-books and pass their nursing program with 1st class hons/diplomas, then change professions or travel the world instead! US Embasssy immigration interviews
No the medicals are literally 1 weeks prior to interviews(when I had my medicals) my friend had his medical and interview 1 weeks apart only 2 weeks ago. And we had to go back and collect medical reports to take to the embassey. But I think there was always delays with the medicals and the embassey are aware of this. therefore contact the embassey and Nuffield hospital and make them aware and rearrange your medical and or interview- but it may delay things by a couple of weeks/months

uk nurses who have come to the usa
Hi this is a good post, i wish i saw it before now- I have been in Florida nearly 4 weeks now and so far so good! Firstly: immigration at the airport is SLOW(3hrs wait) so tell anyone picking you up not to come too early! All they do is check your paperwork from embassey and take fingerprints. Social Security No. is taking upto 6weeks to be sent so you maynot start work immediately. And you cannot do anything without SSN. Open a bank account asap(i had one previously for about 4 years now) To Register children in school if in florida you will need to get a physical done for them and immunisations transferred onto their DOH Blue Forms before they can start. Anyway all is good, I passed my driving tests(written& practical), children are in school and making friends(they are the youngest in their years as the UK education is way way ahead) Weather is good although 1 hurricane scare already, and probably more to come! My hospital (Kidney diaylsis centre )is good so far,I've been there a week training for 6wks and orientation for 6 months and people seem friendly. The pay is low though $22 per hour I got £29,000 in UK. Had to fill in W-4 tax form what is this about -it's confusing! I have to take out health insurance either with Bluecross or Aetna-which is best? I tried to get credit cards with American Xpress they declined as no sufficient credit history so its not that easy, BOA gave card with $500 so thats a start. Got a car to buy 2001 ford explorer and took small auto loan to build credit also . This is a good post can any1 answer my ?? on W-4 tax and health insurance? Thanks

Hi re. medicals you may need to see if the London Nuffield Hospital can fit you in sooner , if not contact the embassey ASAP to tell them your medical is post your interview. They may not issues visas until medical repors have been recieved. Re diabetes/BP get a Drs reports indicating HBA1C,Bp, eyes check, reflexes, medication, etc & appointments for last 6-12months(get report/letter from your GP or clinic consultant(consultant may be easier and they won't charge, your GP may charge you!)take report to medical appt. Make sure your immunisations are upto date-HepB,MMR, tetorifice etc at the medicals you will have chest X-Ray(TB) and bloods taken for HIV(adults only). They will check your eyesight also, so take any glasses/contact lenses. If you need more info let me know and if i think of anything else i'll let you know:idea:

Racial relations in the UK
Hi!! answer to question is that there is going to be a race issue wherever you go, there is always going to be someone who plays the race card, is racist or is a hidden /silent racist. I have lived in London all my life (35yrs) and have come across racist attitudes and have either spoken out about it or held my tongue because I didn't want to come across as being"militant"! For example I went into a bank for 4 cheques totalling £4000 , the cashier quickly assumed that i was a fraudster and I was referred to the bank manager who interrigated me about my own money. I stated that i no longer wanted the services of that bank and wrote a letter of complaint. I recieved a verbal and written apology. Look at the lengths I had to go too!!! and by the way I am Black British, my parents are Black Caribbean. I teach my children right from wrong and they have friends and family who are black, white, asian, european, etc... and as long as they know their Black history and their rights as human beings... who gives a damn about racism !

US Embasssy immigration interviews
:rotfl: Hi all! I went for my interview today at 9am and was successful and was out by 10am.I took my 14yr old with me as she had to do her fingerscan and sign her application form. Got to embassey early(was there for 8am and went in at 8.45am) and was ticket no.1 for immigrant visa.(so get there early) was called within 10 mins, got to the booth, imm.officer(man) checked file and original documents(please put them in the order stated in packet 4)and make a copy of all documents for immigration to keep, we signed our photos, paid the excess $45 fees(as fees had gone up since April) and then went back to seats, and waited for our names to be called.10 mins later the second imm.officer(man) then took our fingerscan, asked me what type of nursing i would be doing in the USA and basically told us that we had our visas, what the procedure is at the airport in the USA once we arrived(temporary green card issued-full green card sent/given after3months) it was over in 15 mins. He said welcome to the USA and we joined the queue for the courier service. I am soo excited now:p , i called all friends and family and am off to relax now. I wish everybody "Good Luck" in their travels. I'll keep in touch when I reach to Naples,Florida:)
