  1. Sorry, I was not asking for medical advice...apparently I was not making it clear enough that I was just wondering if anyone has had root canals before and what their experience was like. I'm pretty sure I know the difference between an RN and a dentist...I did not go through 2 years of h*ll for nothing. Sorry to snap but I found it offensive...I'll drop it from here on out.Hope you treat your patients better.... Geesh...
  2. Is the sizing chart for IguanaMed scrubs accurate? I'm having trouble deciding what size....usually no matter what, I average a size medium, but I'm wondering if they run on the small or large side of things? I have an estimate of my measurements and when I look at the chart, it's got "originial fit" measurements, then "unisex" measurements. If their clothing goes according to their listed measurements, I fall more towards a large size...hence the dilemma... I'm looking at getting a pair of the UniSex cargo pants, one of the 3 pocket scrub tops, and one of the Bamboo IguanaSkinz long sleeve shirts....Of which I'm also not sure about size...somewhere I read get a size up because of the bamboo/cotton shrinking? Anyone know if the skinz run small or large? Thanks for any help!
  3. Been doing my orientation the last few days...We started out with a very low census, about 8 patients...So thumb twiddling was inevitable:uhoh3: This is a small, rural hospital and I'm on the acute/rehab floor doing orientation. Anyway yesterday we get 4 admissions, all sent from a bigger hospital! I got help going through 1 admission the day before and yesterday I did the entire admission just about, took report on the phone, etc...And we aren't computerized yet, so all admission stuff is on what seems like a million different papers. So it seemed to take forever just to get one patient done, then I helped do another admission. On a 7a-7 shift, I really start to by like 4...Yesterday I didn't even get to my lunch until 3pm! Ah well, patients first and foremost. Off till Friday then I go straight through the weekend. I'm still having the dumb newbie moments but I'm attempting to not beat myself up, everyone seems pretty helpful and at some point everything will
  4. Yeah, I'm probably going to go with the root canal...My teeth are in great shape otherwise. I feel this resulted from problems I had in the past with the filling - it had cracked, I had to go have it redone...Same guy to boot. And something I noticed, last 2 times I've been there for cleanings, when he comes to check, his hands shake really, really bad....so don't know what the issue is but I sure wouldn't want him drilling out my teeth...
  5. I wanted to ask on here, see what you all have to say. I went to get my teeth cleaned today, just the usual once a year thing. Well apparently a tooth was a little funny colored so they tooth an x-ray and come to find I have an abcess at the base of the roots of this one tooth I have a filling in. It's never bothered me really. So anyway right now my insurance is Medicaid, and it'll change once I get this new job going, but where I usually go to the dentist, Medicaid only allows him to do an extraction. I was given the numbers of other offices to call and see if they can do a root canal through Medicaid. I'm just wondering if anyone here has had a situtation and what way did you go, root canal or have it pulled? My teeth are otherwise in great shape, I had braces years ago, actually had to have 2 good teeth pulled to haveb races on and allow my wisdoms to come in. Part of me is just wanting it pulled and done with, what good is a dead tooth with filling...The other part of me is thinking "am I going to have a gap then if it's pulled?" Would appreciate some thoughts. Thanks
  6. Oh I know it. I finally picked up a job but everyone said to me "Oh, they need nurses everywhere, you won't have a problem". Not so these days...it's tough but something will open up, be patient, it takes time. I finally got mine, per diem, but they have me doing orientation on 12 hour shifts on a small acute/rehab floor...12 hours = quicker burn out IMO
  7. It's hard being a new grad...I graduated in May of 09....Only just in the last 2 weeks finally got a job...Keep looking and I might also suggest look and see if any summer camps are hiring camp nurses? This past summer I was the camp nurse at a camp I'd worked at the last few years as a counselor. I actually learned quite a bit with having campers come in, some with medications, a couple with rare disorders, etc...I loved it and am planning to be back this summer as my current job is per diem. Don't blame yourself, the economy is not what it used to be. Everyone tells me "Oh, there's a shortage of nurses, everyone is in demand"...Well depending on where you live, maybe, but in other places not so. I live in the poorest or second poorest county in NY state to begin with.... Besides, it seems it's the health insurance companies "running" the hospitals and such now, not the medical staff:mad:
  8. I think part of it has to do with the where the economy is at. I graduated May 09, passed my boards June 6...worked as a camp nurse then took a little time off, then spent from December through February applying for jobs...getting told that "positions had been filled"....You can't help but have the thought "they don't like me...I'm not good enough for them"...etc...Well finally I just landed a per diem job, so I'm glad, even though it's rough on 12 hour shifts. I do know the camp wants me back so I am about 75% sure I'll be going back to that since this job currently is per diem, so I can fit it in I think. Keep looking...your time will come...
  9. So I started Weds. with orientation...8 hours of videos, quizzes, reading, and signing my signature about a 100 times. Thursday came in to start orienting on the small med/surg floor....They told me I'd be up there before I go to the immediate care, which is the job I was told on the phone. Fine by me, allows me to brush up on med/surg. Well on their med/surg it's only 12 hour shifts...not fun...was on the floor 7a-7p with another orientee, one RN, one LPN, two CNA's....and 9 patients...It's more of a rehab floor so there was basically nothing to do! I followed the lpn as they have the lpn doing all med passes... Leave at 7, drive through the snow storm home. Have to come back in Friday for another 7a-7p. Got to do a little more stuff but still...more time spent twiddling my fingers because of the low census. This is where I got a little PO'd...Besides not really having any schedule for orientation, I find out from the manager in the immediate care, when I had to go down there to get a vial of Decadron, the NM for the med/surg floor said I was hired for there, not the imm. care. I was like WHAT!? Because when HR called me to offer the job, she said per diem in the imm. care. So Monday I will be finding someone to get some clarification on what is going on....I did not say yes to be working 12 hour shifts on a rinky dink med/surg floor....imm. care is 8 hour shifts. It's been chaotic and now this? It's fine if I'm going to be up there for a bit till they feel I' fine to go down to the imm. care...which is rinky dink as well....But I also know they are trying to get more RNs on the med/surg so I don't know if they think it's their way to get what they want...People seem fairly nice enough but you can't trust anyone and with another orientee who has more experience, it seems they've been pushing to get her going and leaving me sitting around, wondering what the next move is... I get to go back in Mon and Tues....off Weds/Thurs...then go Fri/Sat/Sun which I'm not thrilled about at all....
  10. I recently got hired (finally) to work per diem in a small, rural hospital in their immediate treatment/urgent care center. I received a letter telling me about orientatio tomorrow and to bring a form of ID and my Imm. records. What do I wear there? I'm assuming the first day is full of paperwork and new employee stuff. I'm just not sure, do I wear scrubs or do I wear like nice casual? I'm assuming nice casual? I also have no idea what to expect, they did not tell me much. This is basically my first real RN job since graduating last May and becoming licensed. I did work as a camp nurse/health director for 3 months, took a little time off to enjoy it while I could, then have been applying for jobs the last couple months.... Thanks for the help, would appreciate it!
