Ethical question...what would you do?
In my opinion, this behavior is inappropriate and unprofessional. It is a serious boundary issue. The nurse should be responsible to supply her own 'pain medication' if her symptoms are that severe. If a headache or unusual occurrence happens at work where tylenol may be necessary, the charge nurse should approve and dispense to the floor nurse a tylenol from the stock supply. Even though you are a new nurse, you need to keep your professional ethics and boundaries intact. If you are concerned enough to mention this in the nurse online, you must be seriously concerned about your coworker's behavior. If this nurse helps herself to patient's medications in front of you....what may she be taking when no one is observing. This is not behavior that should be tolerated and I would find a way to professionally discuss this with the supervisor. You must do what is RIGHT....You are a professional nurse and should not be making ethical decisions based on fear that you will 'rock the boat' or upset a coworker!!! Be true to yourself. Respectfully, Dianne

unprofessional behavior in RN community
In my opinion, these nurses should be reprimanded with a disciplinary write up according to their contract. With attitudes and behavior like that, our nursing profession will soon be given a bad reputation. Dianne

Nurse Educators, Introduce Yourselves!
I believe you will ge positioned quite well with your geriatrics specialty...as you know there is a huge demand for gereatric nurses. I would think a masters degree would be a great place to start with advanced practice NP you could be teaching, but would have to maintain your practice license. A CNS would be another option that may fit better if you are interested in community health. Salaries are greater in state vs private colleges. I found that it is most useful to seek job postings via the college online advertisements, look in your state job bank, and other various internet sources. Your local newspapers are usually the last to get the news. Good luck., Dianne

Nurse Educators, Introduce Yourselves!
Hello everyone, so nice to read all the awesome nurse comments. I have my Masters in Nursing, with a Clinical Nurse specialist focus in Med/Surg. I will be teaching at the BSN level this Fall in Adult Health: Gero. and Holistic Nursing. My work history includes a Licensed School Nurse while my kids were little....the schedule was perfect. I also had two years med/surg before that. I then did clinic work and management/CNS in residential chemical dependency/detox with adults and adolescents. I am excited about teaching and would appreciate any ideas and support from experienced instructors. Thanks ahead of time.Dianne

new girl has many questions!
Congratulations for your career goal of 4 year RN. My recommendation is to continue right on with your BSN. It is too easy to stop after the 2 year, think I might work for a while and go back later....it won't happen. Just Do It. You will be positioned for more options in nursing. For example, you will receive your PHN (Public Health Nursing) so can work community/public health...you will be able to work as a Licensed School Nurse, which is wonderful when and if you are raising a family...same schedule and summers/holidays off. I did this when my kids were young and it was wonderful to be working and not missing much...I was even home when my kids got off the bus!!! With your BSN, you are poised to go right on for your advanced practice, which is booming righ now...I would also encourage you to take the Statistics course before you graduate, as you need it when you apply for any Master's Level Program. I know that sounds like alot of school, but believe me....it opens so many more avenues then simply hospital nursing. You can never have too much education. In light , Dianne

Interested in starting own business
I am a clinical nurse specialist and have also received my Holistic Nursing Certification, Reiki and Certified Massage Therapy. Recently unemployed, I am praying and discerning the true path for me now. Pursuing my dream of an independent Holistic Nurse consulting and therapy business continues to speak loudly to me. I have no background in business start up, etc. Has anyone pursued this? I appreciate any advice, guidance, resources, referrals or opionions. Thanks, In light and love, Dianne
