  1. I used to work rotating schedule but now straight nights. I absolutely love this shift. I clump my shifts together, then stay on a modified night schedule on my days off. To help sleep during the day i dont watch tv or workout after my shift. I drink herbal tea and read. I have blackout curtains, nature sounds from iPod, turn phone off, and also take a sleeping pill ( but only on days of a shift)
  2. I work in a hospital that combined the two different units into one large birthcare center with one manager. I was hired to postpartum as a new grad then 1 year later they trained me to L&D. I now am considered to be a cross trained RN who could work either PP or LD on any given day. The longer we work here the more rolls we are trained to; anesthesia RN, scrub, assist, charge, home visits, tours, etc.
  3. Haha I'm sorry, I typed too many 0's and didn't proofread. Our unit does do 1:1 in labor, we are very lucky to have the staff we do. I have heard it is uncommon and that is why I love my unit
  4. Hey everyone! I am currently a postpartum and L&D nurse in Iowa but looking to move in 1.5 years once i have 3 years experience. I just want to broaden my horizons a bit. I love the unit I work for many reasons; great teamwork, birthing suites pts stay from admission until discharge, ability to be cross trained in PP and LD, 1:1 nurse: pt ratio for labor pts, high census: average 26,000 babies per year, and a level ll nicu. I am trying to find a unit with most of these qualities. Any information will be well appreciated In relation to the unit, the hospital, salary, and city. Thanks everyone!

I am working on in a Birthcare Center this summer to help improve the teamwork/communication between the nurses and the unlicensed assistive personnel (techs). Everyone on the unit, knows this is a huge problem and it affects the efficiency of care for patients. The unit has two ORs for C-sections and only about three techs working at a time on the day shift. The main problem is that tasks aren't being done either by the nurse or tech and when that happens attitudes fly. This mainly occurs when a c-sections are to occur soon and the only ones that set up the OR are the techs. When this happens, the techs are taken off the floor, leaving their work uncompleted. So many of the nurses are so fed up with this problem that they don't even use the techs anymore, and just do everything themselves but then the techs feel their work is being taken away. Basically, I need program/project ideas to try on this unit to improve communication/teamwork among these individuals. I am not allowed to adjust staffing/scheduling and so I have to work with the situation as is. Input from anyone in this field would be greatly appreciated!!
  7. Thanks for asking those questions because I am currently working on a project related to healthcare policies in another country. By any change, are you in a Masters program at the University of Iowa?
  8. Thank you all for your input. I am looking to work in either Queensland or Western Australia but I would be open to just about anything. From the research I have done so far and what your posts say, I may work in the states for a year or two to gain experience and during that time, apply to work in Australia. I graduate this July so I am just thinking that may not be enough time to organize everything before moving. Thanks everyone!
  9. Hello all! I have always wanted to live in Australia and I have heard they are in need of nurses right now. I will graduate in July from a program in the United States and hope to move down there but I am in search of New Grad programs. If anyone could point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated
