Does being an RN give me advantage if i want to be a doula?
I currently am an RN working in Ortho, but have done every MED-Surg thing out there for five years. The only problem is, is that I have only wanted to L/D since i got out of nursing school and have applied for many jobs with no luck. Now i have a child and work part-time and want to quit and do doula stuff or work with a midwife and get certified with home births and wonder if I my RN degree sort of sets me up for less work in obtaining my doula cert? I have already ready many books on birth, been to several births and then givin birth once myself. Any thoughts?

Repeated Tries x 5 to Enter L/D field--Still applying Suggestions
All I have wanted to do was delivery babies with no fault of trying. I actually got offered an L/D job right out of RN school, but I was moving to another state to start over because of a divorce. I had no idea that this was a fate sealing moment in time. Since then, I have been an RN for five years. I've been in Cardiac, Float Pool, and now Ortho/Neuro. I am so tired of this type of nursing and really want to be with women and families, doing what i was made for. I have applied for multiple L/D positions and the person with experience in the field always get hired over me. What do i need to do to give me an edge? Become a doula? Take fetal monitoring on my own? TAke NRP on my own? Frustrated, singmaggie-RN

AF or Navy Nursing with a BS & ASN
Thank you, again. I really appreciate the input. I'm really drawn to the AF, and just want to make intentional/thought out choices. I don't really have a desire to do work with indians or prisons, but thanks for the thoughts. :) I do think that getting my MS or finishing my bachelor's online would work well, b/c I really only have like 20 more credits for my BSN, which are many research classes and case management.... well, off do look more online.. peace

AF or Navy Nursing with a BS & ASN
Thanks for the input. I have thought about that as well, but just trying to figure out how to finance it all and still get out of debt. I'm not even sure what I would get my master's in? I really just want to get more experience and travel. Right now I'm not making that much and I work nights, which even give me a differential. I'll just keep looking and thinking. But, thank you, really, for the input and advice Kind Regards, Maggie

AF or Navy Nursing with a BS & ASN
I have read many posts, but not one specifically to meet my criteria: I've been an RN for 1.5 years, ASN, but have my Bachelor's in Communications. I love nursing and just want a change in my life. I'm divorced, no kids and would like to travel. I love trauma/ob/emergency and currently and am just doing civilian Med/Surg Tele Nursing. I am wondering: Can i do AF nursing with my degrees? Can I do Navy nursing with my degrees? I have found that each offers sign on bonuses: My friend in the navy just got 35K, but I am just curious about the quality of life as well. Would I be living in dorms? House? Can we have pets? Any other info would be good as well... Thanks Maggie

IV piggyback
Yep, do it all the time. Except i don't do the Heparin, b/c mostly where i've worked, heparin has to be ordered separately, b/c its a drug and some people are allergic to it, or are on heparin/coumadin and it could mess with their PT/INR. I give IV piggy's as primarys all the time, and then just flush with saline and go. maggie

Critical Care Internships in Colorado, Idaho, Washington
Hey, I am not sure, but when I was hired as a new grad a year and half a go, at Swedish Medical Center, Englewood, CO(just south/right on the line, of Denver ) they were hiring new grads in CC nursing and it was an internship of some kind. So, you might could call there or speak to their nurse recruiter. Its a good hospital, Level One Trauma, or you could look into Saint Anthony's Central, also a Level One Traum Hsptl, also in Denver, which is one the hospitals, I work for now(I float to diff ones in the Denver area, within Centura Healthcare, now) Hope this helps a little, Maggie feel free to call with questions 301-905-8515
