Thanks for all your responses. I wasn't really considering keeping my medical assisting cert. current to ever return to it, although now that I've read some of your posts it definitely makes sense for that reason also. I had forgotten that some of the instructors I had for medical assisting were RNs also, that's another good option to keep open for the unknown future. I was thinking it would be helpful in fields like case management where I would need to deal with insurance companies or if I wanted to work in a specialist's office which would require clinical and administrative experience. I was leaning towards recertifying so I'm definitely going to go ahead after reading your posts.

I am a certified medical assistant and I have two semesters of nursing school to go. Should a nurse also keep a medical assisting certification current? Since certified medical assistants have administration, coding, billing, insurance, etc training that isn't taught in a nursing program it seems like it could still be a valuable certification even after becoming an RN. Any thoughts? Also, would it be appropriate to use RN, CMA(AAMA) as credential?
