i called the TN board of nursing and they said excelsior was fine. i also know several people who have done it with no problem. you should be able to sit for boards in TN. hope it doesn't change anytime soon!

i am going though excelsior to get my RN. i really enjoy the flexibility of it. if you go under the students tab and then distance learning you can find out about it or go to www.excelsior.edu .

they are accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC). it is all self study. it is basically like taking a final in every class. there are no assignments... so your test is your only grade for that class. you do need to check with your state board of nursing though. like the first poster said.

i am currently in the excelsior program. it works great for me. you have to be very self motivated. i was doing great and got discouraged over A&P. finally took that in Nov and got a B. then went on and took micro last thurs and got an A! now I'm super psyched and ready to go again. i have 2 children and another due in may so it is nice being able to work at your own pace. i would recommend not going through any publishing co such as the college network and others. i have borrowed alot of books and you can buy books used and then resell them. i really like www.studygroup101.com notes. they are only $10 and have alot of information. you can also use www.instantcert.com . it is $20 a month and you can cancel anytime. i used this for gerontology, abnormal psych, and now ethics. they have alot of info there. i got an A in gerontology and abnormal psych and used both the websites i mentioned above. studying now for ethics. oh and it is sooo worth the money to take the excelsior practice exams! they are wonderful! make sure you reread over all the questions and rationals. alot of the same stuff will be on the test. well similar anyway. definetely worth it. i would give them a call and just talk to them. they are very helpful and will send you info on it and answer any questions you have. everyone there i have ever talked with by phone or via email have been very helpful and nice. you can also go under the "student" tab on the allnurses website... then go under distance learning. alot of people in there are going through excelsior. hope this helps some.

i personally don't rely on them very much. i think their material is good but the practice tests not so much. i sent them multiple corrections for one subject they actually refunded me the money. i knew the correct answer from studying their material though. just my opinion.

Thanks for the replies! Yes you do still have to take the CPNE. I am really nervous about it but think I can handle it. I went though a vocational school to get my LPN so I have never been in a traditional college setting. I have already taken 3 general education courses through EC. Before I started EC I called the NP programs I was interested in and asked if they accepted EC graduates... They all said yes but I didn't even think about asking about gen edu requirements. I just figured if they accepted the nursing courses they would accept anything. Guess I need to email them and check. I would be really upset if I spent all that money for nothing! I have a question. Has anyone who graduated from EC (even general educations requirements) gone on to get their NP? I am in the process of getting my RN now from Excelsior but having to get all general requirements also. Wondering if NP schools accepted these. I called the schools I am interested in and they said they accept Excelsior grads, but I forgot to ask about the general requirements. Guess I will just have to call back and ask. Just curious... Thanks!

Thanks for all the input. I really appreciate it. As for what credit it counts for... I'm not sure. In the little handout from Excelsior it is under Arts and Science Electives. Again thanks for all the input. Hopefully I'll do ok.

Has anyone taken the EC Foundations of Geronotology exam? I am taking this exam on Thursday evening. I thought I was doing pretty good but now I'm not so sure. Any advice or tips will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

i haven't used the studygroup101 notes for the nursing courses but have for others. i found them to be helpful. i have found some errors on the test (which they corrected). they do have excellent customer service and the rest of the material is great. i would give it a try. hope this is somewhat helpful.
