  1. I work L&D on the Jersey shore & we get a lot of grand multips... we use either 18G or 20G angios for our IVs... it's like practically sticking fork prongs in people, but it's our policy! Just out of curiosity, what do you guys use?
  2. It's sad that this stereotype still exists. I work L&D and I know for a fact that they will NEVER hire a male for an RN position... yet all but maybe 6 OB/GYNs I work with are male (we do 4200+ deliveries a year). I wish you the best of luck, never give up on your goals!!
  3. I'm not sure if I can really help, but here's my story: I was hired in L&D right out of school (BSN)... I had done my nursing school preceptorship in L&D so I technically had SOME experience. I was originally hired for Med/Surg but turned it down because I've NEVER liked M/S. I knew I wanted L&D. I went straight to HR & basically fought to get an interview because they were hesitant because it's such a specialty, I was new, and young. I told them how much OB nursing meant to me & all I wanted was an interview. I got it, and an hour after my interview I got the phone call saying I got the job! My advice to you is to really fight for it. Make sure you know the area too, it'll show your dedication. Don't take no for an answer, especially if positions are still available. They should at least give you a shot, especially because you have experience. I love my job, and look forward to working every day. GOOD LUCK!!!
  4. I work L&D at a busy hospital (we delivered 4000+ babies in 2009 alone) & am 7 weeks pregnant. We deal with all sized patients & with all sorts of medical problems during pregnancy. My question is, when should I tell my coworkers I'm expecting? I'm just afraid that I might put myself into normal work situations (that might be considered dangerous while pregnant) because I don't want anyone finding out. Any suggestions??
