  1. I need a little perspective here. I work 12's at an LTAC that routinely gives you 6-7 patients who are all vented, total dependent, on titrated drips...very sick in other words. I am almost 8 months pregnant and am having a hard time being on my feet, boosting etc. for that amount of time. I called my DON today and asked if I could be telemetry monitor for my shift tomorrow night, as I am having an asthma flare up and do not feel safe working the floor. (My pulse is up to 140 just walking around the house.) I was told no, that telemetry is randomly assigned and they cannot promise me anything. I haven't worked a telemetry shift my entire pregnancy, but they have put young nurses, able bodied nurses, male nurses there routinely. I have never requested the position before, but I feel that it should be obvious to them that if I cannot work safely for my fetus, then tele is a viable option where I can still contribute. I stated this to my DON who again refused. I then stated that I would not be coming to work at all. She REFUSED to take me off the schedule and told me to call tomorrow. I know that the same will be said tomorrow and they will then write me up for not giving 24 hours notice. I'm ****** and need some input. Thanks!!!
  2. Hi Folks, I am currently an ASN student and am sure that I will continue with my Bachelor's degree. I would like to know if there are there any alternatives to a BSN that will increase my hireability and medical knowledge base? I've been thinking about Nutrition, as I find it really interesting, but will it decrease my "value" not to have a BSN? What Bachelor's degrees have you seen RN's work with and make work for them? Thanks!
  3. Hi everyone. I am in clinicals and caring for a schizophrenic patient on a rehab floor. The pt. is classified as catatonic, he doesn't speak and moves rarely. He will bite, punch and kick whenever touched by staff though. He is not on restraints and is physically very strong. I don't know why he's still on the rehab floor, he has no physical impairments and his admitting dx was schizophrenia. I would like some advice on how to bath and provide mouth care for this pt. w/o trigegring violence. His RN is available to me, but seems irritated by my need for assistance and information. Does anyone have tips on working peacefully with psychotic patients? Thanks!
  4. Hi there, I am a student nurse who would appreciate tips on body mechanics/client movement techniques. We learned a bit in class but it was quickly taught and not very thorough. I am 5'11 (6'1" with my shoes on!) and very small framed. Any other tall skinny nurses out there with advice? I'm particularly worried about moving clients that are shorter from the bed to a chair/commode. Should the bed be at my height or close to the floor for a shorter pt? I already get some pain in my thoracic spine from bending over to do basic care things. Thanks! :)
  5. Thanks for the detailed information everyone. Unfortunately Roxbury does not deal with any Federal loans. They take grants but there was a scandal at some point involving theft of Federal loan money by the school, and the Feds blocked them from handling any money. At least that's what I glean from searching the net. Their RN school is accredited though, and it's where I got in, so I'd like to find a way to stay there. I just don't know if I can make this work though. Thanks, again.
  6. Hi all, I have a question about private student loans in relation to the typical salary/job outlook for a new grad ADN. I am attending Roxbury Community College's RN program starting next week. I did not qualify for grants based on income (ha!) and Roxbury does not accept ANY federal loans. This leaves me with the only option of taking out private loans at a variable APR upwards of 9.95%. I have done the math and I will be responsible for repaying about $27,000 at the end of the two year program. Based on your experience, would paying off this loan at 200-300$ a month be feasible for a new grad? I am not sure how much they get paid, and I know that most Boston hospitals aren't hiring ADNs. I am trying to decide whether to wait another year and apply to a different school, or to just bite the bullet and take out the loans. I am almost 30 and eager to finish school, so time is a factor for me. Thanks for your thoughts!
