  1. I'm not feeling that way I'm just saying that there may still be a way besides taking out loans. And for you as well as those who have not read ALL my posts please read. I SAID I WANT TO GET LOANS I dont mind the responsibility and all as long it takes the financial pressure away from my parents, but they don't want me to take out loans just yet. Good for you then that your parents can manage to help you out. My parents cannot manage at all if that's what you really want to know. Anyway, thanks for everyone's advice as well as criticism. :)
  2. Yeah I'm going for the BSN. Honestly, I'm seriously thinking of taking out a loan since I'd be the one paying for it anyway once I graduate and not my parents so the pressure is on me. It's just that my parents won't let me and tells me to keep looking for scholarship/grants or whatever is out there, since my aunt was able to go to school for free (she even finished her masters in nursing), but that was years ago..
  3. I don't think there's a job that is willing to give you $4000 in two weeks right? And I have applied over summer to different jobs here in Las Vegas and got no reply, not even one phone call. =(
  4. in tuition fees only, i'm short of $4000. I need the money before august 24th or else they drop me from the program since they want us to buy a lot of things before august 24th. my biggest problem is that I don't have insurance. That's the one that's very expensive and is needed by august 24th.
  5. short of a hundred bucks in tuition fees only.. I'm actually short of $4000
  6. I guess I'll go straight to the point. Here's the deal: I'm from Las Vegas and I go to UNLV as a nursing major. I decided to stay as an in-state student because it was cheaper for my family. My millenium scholarship and pell grants have, so far, covered at least all my tuition fees and classes for the first two years of my college (pre-nursing). This is why I decided to not even bother applying to other states as a transfer student since I thought that my tuition fees and classes were at least covered. The good news: I got into the nursing program with A's and B's (I know, not very impressive) and we start on Sept. 7. The bad news: I just realized that my scholarship and grants are not enough to cover my tuition fees and classes (it's fallen short by a couple of hundred bucks) and my parents don't have enough money to pay for all other requirements, which should be completed by August 24th (if it's not complete by then you're dropped from the program). I feel like it's not fair if I'm dropped from the program just because I don't have enough money. What I'm hoping for: other states, universities, or whatever is out there who's willing to take me in as a student (for free in exchange for working for their company when I graduate, or at least have my tuition fees and classes waived, or whatever kind of financial aid they can offer that is more than what I'm receiving right now, I know this is a lot to ask) and I promise to work my hardest, meet/exceed their standards, and forever be grateful. My student background: unfortunately, I'm just a regular student. I don't think my SAT's are impressive (I have a total of 1600, I'm sure other kids have higher), I'm an A and B student and GPA 3.64 (I think) and I've never taken the ACT test. I wasn't involved in any extra curricular activities (because again of the out-of-pocket expenses) but I did at least 100 hours of community service at the local library and elementary school. Though I get A's on my essays most of the time, I personally don't think they're that impressive (I've read way more impressive essays on the internet). I'm shy but I'm willing to go out of my comfort zone and even away from my family if it means getting a better education for less. Btw, I'm an immigrant and my family makes less than $50,000/year. (I don't know if this info can increase my chances, most of the really good scholarships I saw were geared towards U.S. citizens which is understandable since the U.S. is supposed to cater to it's citizens first before everyone else.) Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!
  7. Thank you so much!! Also, I was wondering if the nursing school in UNLV offer any scholarships that I could apply for? (Aside from the Millennium Scholarship and the Federal Pell Grant)
  8. Is there anyone out there who has taken HESI Admissions Test at UNLV? I heard that they just switched to HESI recently and I want to know what I need to study. I talked with my counselor a couple of months ago and she told me that I could buy the HESI flashcards and HESI secrets study guide but they are so expensive (and the reviews about them aren't that great either, so I saw it as a waste of money). I saw a PDF format at some university of what to expect in the HESI exam and it included a broad subject on A&P and Chemistry. Are they part of the HESI test at UNLV? I plan to enter the program Fall of 2010 so I need to take the exam as soon as possible. Any information regarding the HESI will be very helpful! Thanks!!
  9. I'm really getting frustrated or maybe I'm just not looking hard enough but I have seen many scholarships that are not eligible to me! Most of them are saying that you have to be a daughter/son of this and that organization, you're a member or a family member is a member of this and that group, you live in this certain area, have this certain ethnicity, on and on and on rattling endlessly with all these criteria. Are there any scholarships out there that just simply states: need-based scholarship to any student wanting to go to nursing school?
  10. Thanks everyone!! This is really helpful for me. I've applied to FAFSA and got my EFC and how much I am qualified for the Federal Pell Grant, but when I went to my University they said that the processing time for FAFSA takes about 4-6weeks.. I applied last nov. 8 for school yr 2009-2010 and haven't gotten any letter from my University saying that I am eligible for any award. Is it possible that because I applied late I might not get any award for this school year?
  11. I'm planning to apply for my University's BSN nursing program in Fall 2010. I was wondering, are there any scholarships out there besides the FAFSA and Federal Pell Grant (I know there are loans, but I'm interested in scholarships or grants)? Unfortunately, the Adopt-A-Student program at our major hospital has canceled their program right when I'm about to begin my nursing studies. Right now, without enough money (my dad is the only one working and supporting 5 of us), I am seriously considering to work or enter a work study program. However, some of our family friends are telling me that that's not a good idea since your clinical and theoretical studies take up most of your time especially when you're a full time student. I would greatly appreciate any help/information regarding any scholarship or grants. I've looked up minority grants, unluckily, I haven't found any for Filipino-Americans. Thanks!
