Shay-shay, personally, I have had a pretty good experience at com. I will tell you though that we have lost about 20 out of 70 original students. The good news is if you fail a class you will fall back to the spring class and will only finish 2 months later than the original date. But just like all other nursing schools, if you fail 2 nursing classes you're out of the program. I have 12 weeks left until graduation!! It's been pretty tough but I can now see the finish line :)

Hey fellow nursing students. I'm just starting me 2nd year at com and I have to say I really think that they have an awesome nursing program. For you guys that have to many credits to apply for financial aid, I was in your same boat. I had already completed an associates and had about 120 hours completed so I appealed to the financial aid committee and was awarded a full pell grant as were many other nursing students. Com also keeps the nursing students up to date with many scholarship programs. Before attending com I had never received any assistance and now I have a full paid scholarship, a pell grant and I just took out my first subsidized loan. All of this has helped me tremendously so I don't have to work and can focus solely on nursing school. I recommend all of you guys try for the financial aid and the scholarships they offer. Many of the students in my class have a scholarship through utmb called nepp. I believe everyone who applied for it got it. Good luck you guys. See y'all in the fall!

Hey guys, I recently bought some older edition nursing textbooks off the internet but just found out I received a scholarship that will cover my books purchased from the bookstore. Anyway, I bought 6 textbooks for the 1st semester and am now looking to sell them at extremely reasonable prices. They range from $5-$15 per book. If anyone is interested you can PM me and let me know.

Alluring- Congrats!!! San Jac sent me an email a couple of weeks ago saying that I couldn't apply because I didn't take my Eng 1 at San Jac. I took Eng 2, along with 118 other hours at San Jac but they would only take Comp 2 or that Engl technical writing class under option B. Luckily, precheck let me transfer my background results from San Jac to Com for free! Good luck to you!!! I have finished all of the deadlines but Cpr. I'm planning on taking it this Saturday.

Alluring- After applying to UTHSC, UTMB, COM and San Jac I have finally found a home. : ) I got accepted into COM! Which nursing school did you decide on? I'm starting the nursing school deadlines today. I'm going to get my titer, background check and statment completed today. Has anyone finished all of the deadlines? Also, about the flu shot, do we really need to get it? It's not flu season and I don't know of a clinic in town that offers it out of season. Anyone have any luck with that?

bdorsey- I've heard that the pharmacology class at Com is the most difficult in the program. It's in the second semester. Have you asked the nursing department if they'll take the pharm class you took at San Jac? I really wanted to take Pharm in the summer but College of the Mainland won't take the transfered class unless it's 3 lecture hours and 1 lab hour. I sent them the class syllabus from each school and they each got shot down because they didn't have the correct number of lecture/ lab hours. Does anyone know of a college that offers a transferrable pharmacology class for Com?

I'm currently in the Health Assessment class. They offer it in the summer for the Lvn-Rn transition students and allow any left over spaces to be filled by pre-nursing students. There are about 7 pre-nursing students in the class and of the 7 I believe only one other person and myself got into the program. Which means pretty much everyone will be taking health assessment in the fall semester so you are not behind. I really like the nursing instructors. They are very encouraging. I would highly recommend Com. Did you get into the evening program at Hcc or are you still waiting to find out? I've talked to a few people in the fast track program who are in their 2nd semester and they all really like Com. One of the girls said they lost 2 or 3 students so far but I think that's typical of any nursing program. Good luck with your decision!

I'm really starting to feel the same way about Com. I have a few family memebers who went to different nursing schools and it's seems quite hard to come across such friendly and caring instructors like Com has. I think I will definitely choose Com over San Jac's nursing program. However, San Jac offers that great hybrid program so that might be the only thing that would sway my decision. But me actually getting into the San Jac nursing hybrid program, very slim chance. So I'm definitely planning and preparing to attend Com's nursing program.

Tine14- You can always accept and then switch at the last minute. I'm sure it's not the proper way to do things but it will make an alternate applicant very happy either way! It looks like San Jac's fall 2009 applicants found out the last week of June so we don't have too much longer. I read some of your past posts and we have alot in common. I also applied to two Universities and was unfortunately rejected due to my past withdrawl record. San Jac and Com were my back up choices. I'm definitely happy to get into one of these competetive programs. I'm currently enrolled in my first semester at Com, which involves one RN class, and I've got to say Com has really great teachers in the nursing department and the program seems like it will be pretty good. I'm really looking forward to attending College of the Mainland's nursing program

I received my acceptance letter on Tuesday!! I'm officially in the nursing program!!

Fall 2009 started getting acceptance letters the last week of June. That wouldn't be too long of a wait for us. They should start sending the application email confirmations shortly. Just a few more weeks till we know!!!

I spoke with the nursing department today and they told me they're hoping to send them out next week.

Nope. Nothing yet. I will definitley post when I receive anything from the nursing department though. Hopefully soon!
