How were you able to cover the cost of living and tuition without a job? I am really considering it but am scared to quit my current job with bills, ect.

How long until you graduate? I have not even started the program yet, so I am kind of worried about using the 2-yr degree to find a job when the standard seems to be pushing towards BSN's. I'm not opposed to getting a BSN but I want to crawl before I walk, learn as I work in my career.

Hi, I have read many posts from working nurses telling about how their employers are almost mandating that all 2-yr nurses have their BSN and the employer will even pay for the schooling. This leads me to belive that the days of getting a job with a 2-yr degree in nursing are quickly coming to an end. I am set to start a 2-yr program Fall of 2013 and will graduate Dec 2015. In your opinion, am I going to be able to get a job with that or will a BSN be required for mostly all entry level positions in nursing? I have other degrees and I know that there are many Accelerated programs that award a 2nd degree/career BSN in as little as 11-12 months, but right now that is not an option for me. (I have to stay employed during school) Please advice!:)

But the first lady said that I cannot be trained working part-time. I dnt mind working during the week after my full time job and on weekends until I make sure that I am a good fit for the career. That is why i posted this. To see if it is an option to keep my full time job and work part time as a nurse before I become a full time nurse. I have heard that nursing school does not prepare you 100% for what working as a nurse can be. Just wanted to test the waters first. Thanks for responding! :)

Are you from Chattanooga? They like for you to attend an information session which breaks down everything you need and the numbers from last years day program applicants. I think the information session schedule is posted on the website. Hope this helps some. Let me know if you need any more information and I will help all that I can!

OMG...Thanks for understanding and not thinking that I am OUT OF MY MIND! I am a Federal Govt Civilian worker, but that is something that I sould look into..Thanks so much for the advice and for being non judgement (for trying to hold on to what I got before I jump in head first). I am not opposed to a nursing home setting for experience as long as they are flexiable and willing to work with me.(never thought of this option) Thanks for the RAY of hope you just shined on my day!

Some of these stories sound just like me! I am soo happy for all of the feedback. I just wanted to make sure that I have not totally lost my mine. PPl around me think im crazy to leave a god paying, secure job, to take a gamble on a totally new career. I am excited and nervous at the same time!!! There is no way for me to know if I am making a mistake until I try! Once again THANKS SO MUCH FOR ALL THE POST...It really helps to hear from people in my same situation!

Thanks for your response!!! How long have you been a nurse now? What made you chose nursing? Did you volunteer in a hospital or have a lot of nurse friends? Your reasons are some of the reasons I am looking to leave my current job. I do not have a lack of security but more a lack of purpose, or like you said excitement. I have two degrees already that are kind of generic (BS Organizational Mgmt and MBA). I thought I needed these things to get a more fulfilling position but still no luck. Did you have to take a big pay cut starting as a RN?
