All of our rooms have glass walls and sliding doors on the end so you can see your pts from the front. I have never seen an ICU where you can't see your patients.Heather

i would say if this is happening a lot then i would ask the charge if so and so could take this patient for continuity of care as i will be ending my shift soon ect...and see what she says. if this is just an occasional occurrence then i would grin and bear it. most charge nurses try to make things a s even as possible and sometimes they have other reasons for keeping certain nurses open for admits. hope this helps. heather

Night before Christmas Parody By Heather Hertz RN Twas the night before Christmas and all through CCU Not a monitor was beeping, so we had not a clue. All the post ops were back and were in a good rhythm. Their index's were perfect, no need to mess with them. The patients were tied snuggly to the frames of their beds While milk of amnesia coursed thought their heads. The night was so peaceful a new nurse exclaimed " I can't believe it's so quiet" and that brought on the change. When over the intercom there came a code blue, on the top of the roof, We all thought " that's new" Away to the rooftop the team flew like a flash. Tore open the code cart and slapped on the pads. The lights of the city shone brightly around As we got a good look at what was on the ground. A portly old man staring off into space, It seemed milk and cookies smeared his jolly round face. We glanced at each other for only one sec, Then shrugged our shoulders and said what the heck. With rapid compressions and a few meds or two We got his heart started but his face was still blue. "Now bag him! Now intubate, can you get a blood gas?" The poor first year was barking out orders so fast. "Transfer to the unit!" The supervisor made the call. Now we all moved like clockwork as we dashed down the hall. As circus clowns smash into that little car Fitting bodies in a space that is to small by far, So the staff in the unit molded into the room To stabilize this patient and maybe save Christmas too. And then with the tinkering of each staff member there. The nurses adjusted and fine tuned his care. By drawing all our heads together, he began turning around. The doctor's all said his recovery will be sound. The worse was all over he was going to pull through, but his recovery would take weeks, what could we do? His big bag of toys sat in the corner of the room. With no Christmas presents there would be so much gloom. How could this happen to jolly St. Nick? The cardiologist replied "Well, He's really quite sick" "He's cubby and plump and the pipe smoking don't help When you have those risk factors this is the hand that is dealt" One of the nurses stood up and said quite resound We can save Christmas we'll just have to figure out how. I mean were not trained to handle reindeers in flight But I'm willing to try it can't be that hard right? The staff's eyes got a twinkle as they thought of their plan To pull it off they would need every last man. It's a very good thing Santa came to the CICU. We figured it out because that's what we do! The charge nurse hopped into Santa's sleigh And took off like a missile, waving goodbye on the way. But I heard her exclaim as she drove out of site ......
