  1. Thank you for your inquiry! For a variety of reasons such as the geographic location of this program and the excellent reputation of the Oregon Health & Science University School of Nursing, it is expected that the nurse anesthesia program will attract many inquiries for application materials. At this point it is impossible to know how many qualified applicants will be in the pool. Applications will be accepted from February 1st to April 15th for those folks wanting to be considered for admission to start classes this coming Fall. For those people wanting to be considered for classes starting Fall, 2007 and beyond, the application deadline will be December 1st of each year. It is likely that approximately 30 of the most competitive applications will be selected for interviews and from that pool, 10 applicants will be offered admission to start classes Fall, 2006. Judging by the exit conference from the recent capabillity review by visitors from the Council on Accreditation on Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs it is very likely that this program will be granted the required initial accreditation to begin accepting students for classes this Fall. Hope this helps with your questions. For further details, please visit the program's website mentioned in the original post.
  2. Announcing the Oregon Health & Science University School of Nursing in Portland, Oregon is offering a new nurse anesthesia program with classes beginning September, 2006. On January 9th and 10th, 2006 visitors representing the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Education Programs conducted a capability review towards obtaining initial accreditation. This visit went exceedingly well and a formal announcement of accreditation is expected Spring, 2006. The program is accepting applications starting February 1st thru to April 15th. Following the application deadline, selected applicants will be invited to the School of Nursing for interviews. Those applicants selected for admission will be notified by mid to late May, 2006. 3. Hello As a CRNA educator, my advice to you would be to stay put in the ICU where you are currently working. The hospital sounds plenty big enough and in a combined ICU such as you describe, its very likely you will get some good experience. Another suggestion would be to check into CCRN certification. The prep for the test is heavy into pharmacology and physiology and would be a good way to bolster your background knowledge base. Take note of your GPA, especially in the undergraduate science courses, and if you need to repeat anything, now is the time to do so. And finally, do some shadowing of some CRNAs in your area to familiarize yourself with the role, professional issues, etc. If you can, try and shadow some CRNAs in varying practice settings to get a comparison. Hope this is helpful. Feel free to message me if you have additional questions or concerns. rickcrna
