how to finger stick for cholesterol screening?
thanks very much, especially to solaire solstace! i've seen the test done but i want to be sure i'm able to pull that much blood into the tube w/out fumbling around or resticking people. your description seems pretty foolproof, hopefully i'll get it right the first time- i'd hate to have to restick anyone or fumble around trying to get blood!

i do but i moved to new orleans. i'd be happy to mail them to you media rate (the post office offers a big discount for sending books). if you're interested i'd check which books youll need then let me know. i can let you know what i can gift to you, there's only a couple that i want to keep, and you can let me know which ones youll need (there is a book list if you want to send it to me) then you could just give me what ever the cost of shipping is which would be far less than buy the books. certainly all the books won't be the same, but the ones' that are shouldn't' be that different and while i always read the texts, i have to admit that they are not a priority, ie, focus on the class notes and don't fret if you have a later edition of the class texts b/c the prof's don't rely on them that heavily so if there are slight variations in a years addition i don't foresee it being a problem for you. just let me know if you're interested, i'd been contemplating recycling them but it's such a shame to let them go to waste if someone can use them. good luck with the ace program- make sure you make every effort to talk to other people who've done it so you know what you're getting into! its a tough program and it's best to be sure its the way you want to go. it is a good sign you're prepping yourself by considering the materials youll need ahead of time. make sure you have the support of friends/family or classmates and be prepared to sleep very little and work your ass off! chris

how to finger stick for cholesterol screening?
I just signed up to do on the spot cholesterol screenings w/a finger stick. i know the screening requires a significant amount of blood to be collected from a single finger stick into a long tube and i was wondering if anyone had any advice on how to perform this procedure effectively? it's hard enough to get an accucheck on some people! i don't want to show up for this new job and not be able to successfully get enough of a sample but i can't find any 'how to' instructions by googling this :-/ thanks very much (to all the nurses who read/post here- i often turn to this site for information, this is the first time i couldn't find an already existing thread for what i was looking for! it's a great resource!)

I have a stack of books i don't want. I'm keeping a few of the critical books I think I may refer to in future. The rest I'd like to donate to a student(s)... they are from the 2008/09 class, so even if this year uses a new edition, they are relevant. please contact me asap with a phone number or good contact as i'm moving tomorrow (forgot about them until i finished packing and found them in a closet) and would like to know they went to a good home where they'll get used!

Moving to Philly/New Grad
unless you know someone you're sure can get you a job, i wouldn't move to philly. i am leaving because i can't get a job here. there are jobs, but moving to yet another city isn't the best idea. in fact, philly has an extremely large amount of nursing schools in the area. i know many new grads who've been out of school for over six months who still don't have a decent job. have you considered finding a job and then moving for the job offer? philly isn't a city i would suggest moving to with out job security. infact, this is true for many many fields. i've many friends, not only nurses, who had to move to other cities b/c the job market here is so tough. good luck

Accelerated BSN programs in Pa
drexel is expensive. I too was shocked that i received no aid/grants/nothing- based on my income i had always gotten a little financial help prior to drexel. the plus is that the program is fast, but the stress and the pressure really does have a lasting affect not only on students, but on faculty and they way students are treated. to be honest, in my 20 years of working and in the multiple colleges/universities i've attended, it's the worst i've ever seen. if you chose drexel ace make sure you have a lot of outside support (you won't get it from the staff- but you'll certainly need it after dealing with many of them) and be prepared to slow down and possibly take much longer than the 11 months they advertise- it appears, from observation of my class, that only about half of the students actually do it in a year. the rest end up paying thousands more and graduate about 7 months later than expected. some take even longer. so the promise of completing your degree in 11 months doesnt hold up if you don't make the grade, literally. i personally have never met an ace grad who said they'd do it again. on the other hand, it is fast, which was the draw for most of us. i have heard better reports from graduates of jefferson's accelerated program.
