Manoa Spring 2010 Admissions
Can someone tell me when Manoa is supposed to send out their acceptance letters for Spring 2010 admission? I am on the alternate list at Kapiolani Comm Coll which I thought meant nothing but someone told me at least 6-7 students a semester get accepted at both KCC and UHM and they usually choose UHM. So, if enough people get accepted at both then I may have a chance to get accepted at KCC if they decline. Anyone got their letters from UH yet? KCC's came out last week. I read that UHM no longer has the ADN to BSN program anymore. Anyone know if that will be reevaluated? Anyone have their CNA? It's my plan B for now since I didn't get accepted (so far) for KCC. Get my CNA in December and work until Fall 2010 admission. Sounds like a lovely plan but I guess I have to start somewhere.

They will review your transcript and include your points and see your grades even if you don't include it since they wait until after the semester and view the grades themselves. You still have a strong app. You should have applied for January 2010 admission, I think you would have gotten in. I have a 4.0, 141 NLN and I am missing 2 classes and I got alt listed. That means I came in next after the 40 they admitted. You're only missing one class and you have health care experience so that would have given you extra points.

New Grads... Is Anyone Addressing The Issue?
I am a nurse wannabe and applied for the KCC program--got alt listed for the upcoming Spring 2010 since I have 2 more classes left to go. In speaking with Wes in July (advisor there at KCC) I specifically asked this question since I already understand the hardships new grads face in attaining employment upon graduation. He said that KCC is in developments with some local hospitals (he declined to say which ones) to work in conjunction with the school in creating additional new grad programs within the next year or two. Although it may not help the grads coming out now, it should assist with those within the next few years. He says he also encourages RN students to take advantage of the career ladder built in to the program, to work as a nurse aide after the first semester, sit for your LPN after 1 year and a semester and try to find employement from there. That would give you a little boost in applying around upon graduation. I am deathly afraid of facing this dilemma that I know already everyone faces. I would hate to find myself with a degree in hand and nothing to do with it. I certainly would never move away from Hawaii.

Well I'm bummed, I didn't get in but I was expecting not to anyways. I still haven't completed all the classes, I am taking those 2 classes now this semester and should be able to get in for Fall 2010. I got alt listed, can anyone tell me your experiences from what you know about the alt list? Supposedly it's 10 additional students they keep on the side in case anyone decides to take other options--like UH if they get in. Anyone applied for both? How about you Lalalia? I'm a litte annoyed but they are making me attend that 5 hour orientation, get my immunizations, TB, uniform fittings and CPR class, just to stay on the alt list. And I didn't even get in~! I read on one of the threads that someone was chosen as an alt, went through everything and didn't get in. Oh well, hopefully anyways I am high on the list and will still get a shot at this upcoming semester. Congratulations to all who got in. And for those who didn't, don't give up!!! It's a lot of hard work but I know many of you can do it!

No letter yet. But my mail carrier has gotten to know me quite well these past few weeks. I too have to open up plan B soon. It'll be okay for me if I don't get in since I know that I didn't finish all the classes yet. But having a glimmer of hope still brings on the anxiety of waiting like everyone else. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!

Are we going to start up using the "discrimination" tag again? C'mon, let's everybody get the point already. Since no one agrees on who came first, let's leave the chicken and the egg alone. I'd hate to see this forum thread go dysfunctional again. Notice we had a fall out from the original poster regarding this whole topic? Haven't heard from her for a few pages. Maybe she got the point. Studentnurserachel states she does not want to "open a can of worms" yet she writes an essay supporting her thesis. Oh well, it's up to you, saving you from target practice. The valid claims we have against your "discrimination" claim will continue to hold through. As for the taxes, don't go there. Your comments make it clear you put yourself above the national guard and reserve members, shame on you..."defined benefit of being in the military, and since the commissaries and exchanges here allow all national guard and reserve members to shop there as well (something that is not guaranteed in other states), plenty of state residents who are not active duty military take advantage of that shopping privilege." I have PLENTY of friends who have served 1- 1 1/2 years in the Middle East. I would say let them have any privilege they want for the rest of their lives, even if it is to "take advantage" as you say of your shopping privileges. I hear people whine all the time about their orders to go here or there...but you knew exactly what the job entailed, both as a military member and a spouse. And the 2 hour drive for a 5 day a week BSN program you complain about? You can bet I could gather a whole auditorium of students here in Hawaii that would GLADLY make that drive. We don't have opportunities as others do. We can't drive or move to the neighbor states to entertain the other 5 options available since the 10 other options in your state don't fit your needs. I would die to drive that 2 hours for my BSN knowing I was guaranteed a spot without having to score a near perfect on my NLN while holding a 3.9 GPA just to be competitive against all the other qualified applicants. When we locals dislike the lack of options here in Hawaii, we move. If we choose to stay, we deal with it, we don't grumble. Same options are open to everyone here alike; locals, military, malihinis, whatever your category. Less pollution here anyways-figure it out.

My friend who is in her third semester now had an NLN of 128 and a GPA of 3.4 Augiebear, how likely would it be that one could handle working at the same time. Can you tell me what the clinical schedule is like. My friend said the first semester it was twice a week for 8 weeks. The second semester was the same. I don't know what the third semester is like but if I can remember correctly it's 3x a week. Can you tell me exactly what time they usually have you be there at the clinicals? I've heard as early as 6:00 am, is that true? Have you taken your bath yet?

Phew-I wouldn't want grades from before to creep up on me. It's nice that KL2010 found out there's going to be 20 more seats, hopefully this will open a crevice for me to slither in. Waiting until August 2010 is so far from now, but I guess it will eventually come. I just wish they would end the suspense and put out some preliminary stats so we could at least figure out on our own where we stand. I'm retaking the NLN in January if I don't get in. I ran out of time on the first test and left 20 questions unanswered in the vocabulary--that's not going to happen to me again!!! I have a friend who's in the program, it's her 3rd semester and she says its rigid!!

Augiebear, Please explain GPA vs. GPR to me? I have 4.0 in all the pre req's and co req's but I'm missing 2 classes still. I've taken other classes outside of what is required (my old degree) but did not do so well back then. Will this come back to haunt me? Or am I to be concerned only with the list for the nursing program? I have an NLN 141, 4.0 but missing 2 classes, anthro & Pharm. I applied to see if I could sneak in for this January 2010. What do you think??

Like Calimom said, I don't want to go back and forth with anyone, there's just too much to debate and not worth the time to refute every single argument one makes. Not to mention how difficult it is to type out every thought you have. Ambiguous meanings are misinterpreted and then people start getting all heated (I am laughing as I type this, by the way). But as most people would naturally feel, there are things to clarify when one responds to you. Things like the DOD contributing money on behalf of military children students, well that comes from DOD, not from the pockets of military families themselves. And just because you pay a whole bunch of fees to set yourself up in a new place, doesn't mean we local people don't move from place to place while we're here. Did I mention how darn expensive my property taxes are? Ouch. I don't shop on base or at the commissary where things are cheaper and tax free, but it doesn't bother me. It's a well deserved privilege and I in no way object to it. I never said that even though KCC's policy is legal that it's right. I said just the opposite if you read again. Like I said before, I agree with all the non residents--military and non-military--who are not able to get into the program KCC has. My wish would be for everyone who applies to get in. I still disagree with your unconfirmed statistic. At the top of my head I know a lot of students who graduated from the KCC program and never left the islands for a job. The only reason why I reiterated the NAACP and ACLU is because you said, I quote " discriminate becuase of race, religion, ect.... ", I left the typos in there too. You mentioned race but I know exactly who the NAACP and ACLU represent and you are right, they represent other cases of discrimination as well. So just to clarify, this is not a 'race discrimination.' Yes, I know what the term discrimination means, and I know what the term race discrimination means too, they are totally different. Like mcubed45 said, make your stand and I too sincerely hope that you are successful. I wish they would open up more seats for more people of all statuses to get in. There's no need to take defense against posts that agree with you.

Calimom, I understand your arguments along with others as well just read posts from out of state and military students. You're right, a lot of graduates who are locals do leave. But more than likely you WILL leave if you are a military dependent. I disagree with your statistic that 75% of the graduates of KCC leave. But if we had to use this statistic as a reference then I would have to say that 100% of military dependents leave. Honestly, I wish that every single person that applied could get in, I would love to see that. And I agree with you that it seems like discrimination. But if it were, this practice would not have gone on for so long. KCC's acceptance policy is perfectly legal otherwise it would not have been in practice for so long. You can apply to UH Manoa. They don't care if you are from Hawaii or from Mars. They have double the seats available and you can get a bachelors instead, only a few more classes to take compared to KCC to get into their program. And your comment about discrimination? The NAACP? The ACLU is not federally funded by the way. This is not a race issue. We have all races living here in Hawaii. There is no discrimination since ALL are welcome to apply, giving preference to RESIDENTS first, not race. If there are no qualified residents then the list will move to non residents. Will this ever happen? No. Why? Because there's only an average of 30 seats available. Are military families subject to state taxes from their pay here? That's where a large pool of state funds for the college come from, part of the reason why its preference to residents. I'm not trying to argue with you, because I agree with you. I get what you're saying, exactly. Unfortunately KCC does not have enough seats and funds to get what you are saying.

Hey there KL2010, Nice to hear from you, sorry to hear about your dad. Family is first, that's why we're doing this in the first place, right? I think I've gotten over the anxiety this past few days as I sat and pondered about what another 8 months of freedom with my kids would be like. Once I realized that these vacations I take 2-3 times a year will be a thing of the past for the next few years, then I don't think I really mind if I get in next August instead of January. Whatever works. I wish that everything works out your way and I'll hear from you soon.

Sorry ctekholm, I went rambling off and I didn't answer your questions! I am planning on taking the test again to see if I can get a better score to guarantee my entry in Fall 2010, and for personal reasons as well. I was very upset at myself for running out of time and want to see what I really would have gotten if I finished the whole test. As for the NLN, I suggest you buy the book now even if you are not ready to take it. The study guide is from the NLN is EXCELLENT. It's almost ditto of the test. Of course not the same exact questions but everything you need to know is on there. I also suggest you start a vocabulary list for yourself now. Take one that's already compiled from the internet. The GRE list is a great start: http://www.testprepreview.com/vocabulary.htm. Put it in a word document and them add words as you go along. THen, take the vocabulary words from the NLN study guide and add them to the list too, you will definitely need to be keen on your vocabulary. You'll be fresh on math and sciences just from taking classes but we don't take any "vocabulary" classes. Again, you have a full load so be careful and do good, study hard and don't give up!

I took all my classes online except for math because I needed the inclass experience. THis is my second degree & I grad from UHM 12 years ago in a different field. Unfortunately although I took all of these sciences then, I had to retake them. I could only use my chem, a humanities & psyc100 from my old degree. I started taking classes in January and I will be complete this semester. Sounds like you have a good load there, try not to stress. Zoology online was great for me but so much to memorize. It's zoology 142 that you have to worry about, that gets deeper than 141. Speaking with the counselor there at KCC, he said they are looking to bring on 2 new instructors this semester so he said it is possible this semester (and subsequent semesters) that they would take up to 50 students instead of 30. Did you hear the news this morning? A record 590 students in the nursing and dental hygiene program at UHM. THat's a lot to compete with especially when there is no nursing shortage here in Hawaii. Watch these posts and you will see that getting a job when you graduate may be very difficult. My advice to you if you can is to take a CNA class and work a few hours while you go to nursing school. It's my current plan. THen after one year and a semester in the nursing program you may sit for your LPN exam. It is very important to have some experience before you graduate, Hawaii hospitals do not hire new graduates very often. Goodluck with your studies. I will be waiting to hear from KCC. THey will be mailing out the acceptance letters by mid October and I will be away on a trip with my kids when that letter comes. How nerveracking.
