Johns Hopkins BSN/MSN Fall 2010 Anyone?
Jesie, I definitely am! I'm trying to keep my mind off it so I don't obsess, but I think it takes entirely too long. I'm anxious to just get my loans sorted and figure out how to pay already, and I can't do that until I know about the package! So, you're definitely not alone :)

Johns Hopkins BSN/MSN Fall 2010 Anyone?
I've had much the same experience as Protongirl... I certainly get the impression that it's a very warm and supportive environment! I also was able to email a recent graduate of the ABSN who is now a nurse on the West Coast. I don't know her personally (friend of a friend of a friend... lol), and was only able to have a brief interaction with her, however she had great things to say about the program, but was very honest about how challenging and fast paced (yet manageable) it was. She also said that she had many opportunities for all sorts of experiences (like the Birth Companions program). I think there will always be some people who feel that the program they've enrolled in wasn't the best for them. It really depends on the person and their individual circumstances, of course. I researched quite a few schools before I decided on JHU, and what really put it over the top for me was my series of interactions with the school... from the initial calls to admissions (honestly, the friendliest, most helpful staff!), online chats, the open house, and the fantastic communication all through the application and acceptance process. Also, JHU appeared to me to be far more organized than any of the other schools I looked into, with more extra-curricular opportunities, as well. In the end, I guess it all boils down to what's right for you and what yu need... and hopefully everything else will follow

Congrats to you, Dizzy! I was accepted ASBN but switched to traditional after more thought. I ended up deciding that the pace of the ABSN would be overwhelming for me. Could you elaborate on what your friend said about a "conservative painting of what a nurse should be?" I'm not sure I understand what that means.

Johns Hopkins BSN/MSN Fall 2010 Anyone?
Steve, really, I don't think you'll have any problem at all! Like others said, just explain frankly and directly exactly what happened during your undergrad degree. I had some family problems during my undergrad years that caused me to have a few semesters' worth of really horrible grades. The admissions office encouraged me to send in a supplemental paragraph or two, in addition to the required essays. I simply described exactly what happened and why I feel those grades were not a reflection of my ability... apparently it must have worked. :) What amazing things you're doing now! It's pretty clear that you have a passion for the field, so as long as your stress this and are clear about how nursing will help you excel in your goals, I think you'll be a shoe-in. My impression is that the SON (unlike a lot of other schools) has a strong interest in applicants who have followed a somewhat convoluted path that brought them to JHU. They know that life happens, and are certainly more interested in who you are now, not what you did then. Good luck!

Global - congrats! I got in early decision but still haven't heard about the MPH-- hopefully will soon. So the PC fellowship is the Peace Corps one... what is the Gurtler scholarship?

Johns Hopkins BSN/MSN Fall 2010 Anyone?
Congratulations all! Marinara, you heard about the MPH as well? I was an Early Decision applicant and got my BSN/MSN acceptance, but still no word on the MPH yet. I was told last week that it would be a few more weeks, anyway. I know for ED apps, they sent out a preliminary financial aid form so that we could get an idea of what we would qualify for. It might be worth calling the office and asking about that. From what I hear, financial aid decisions won't be made until at least late March.

Congratulations Sarabear! Are you in the traditional or accelerated?

Johns Hopkins BSN/MSN Fall 2010 Anyone?
Hey Lizzie! I didn't receive anything yet, either. I sent in my check weeks ago and it's already cleared, so I don't think that's the reason. I was thinking that once they make the regular decisions, they'll send the information out to all of the students at once. So... we'll probably get something sometime next month.

Johns Hopkins BSN/MSN Fall 2010 Anyone?
Hi CaliGirlD! Way back in August I started a post with my credentials to get a reality check about my BSN chances (back when I was deciding what I was going to do)... so rather than write up again, here's the link... https://allnurses.com/general-nursing-student/accelerated-bsn-reality-415913.html I also took the GRE and got a 1210, but that was for the MPH program as it wasn't necessary for the MSN. But yeah, my path to this point was waaaaay convoluted, and not perfect. I tried to get an idea of how many were accepted and how many applications, but she didn't have that info available. But I definitely think they'll make more calls tomorrow... from what I understand, about half of each cohort was accepted early decision. But that's a very very loose estimate. Continued good luck to everyone!

Johns Hopkins BSN/MSN Fall 2010 Anyone?
yep, I was thinking NYU as well, and UNC (deadline is on 12/20, I believe). And possibly Jefferson and UMDNJ, as they're closer to where I live. However, I really really want to get out of NJ! It will be interesting to see what the male/female ratio is... I imagine each year their male enrollment must increase. We have a lot of male nurses here where I work, relatively speaking... and most are ex-military, which I thought was interesting.

Thanks, Poet. I hope you're right! I'd be happy to be in a class with you and the other acceptees from this board! Did you mean you applied October 26? I did the same as you... this is the only program I want, so the only one I applied to. If I don't get in, I'll figure it out from there :)

Questions for those accepted... I know you were probably way too excited to ask too many questions or even remember all that was said... but did you get any indication of how many ED acceptances were made? Also, did you all send in your applications before the deadline? I'm wondering if maybe they call in order of when the application was received. Or I could just be thinking WAY too much about this! :) P.S. For those of you following both threads, forgive me for my double posts!

Continued congratulations to those who have been accepted! As I posted in the other thread... no letter yet, so I'm safe! I hope we keep getting good news tomorrow. Interested in Nursing
Hi Antchick! Sounds like you're in a similar position as I was nearly two years ago. I'm also from the Philadelphia area (I live in South Jersey). I would suggest that you do not go for the ADN, but rather go straight for your BSN. Since you already have a BA, it would take you the same amount of time, or even less, than it takes for the ADN. More and more healthcare facilities are requiring nurses to have their BSN's at entry level now, so it would be worth it to go for that degree. There are a bunch of schools in the Philly area that offer accelerated BSN's for second degree students. Because these programs are much faster, they typically require more pre-requisites. They run anywhere from 11 months (Drexel's ACE program) to 18 months (Univ of Pennsylvania). Villanova has a 14 month program, Jefferson has a 12 month program, and UMDNJ in Stratford has a 15 month program. But, these accelerated programs are extremely intense, and most suggest that you do not work while completing the programs. If you could manage to sacrifice a year to a year and a half of work, it's definitely worth it. You could also transfer into a traditional BSN program. Most will require fewer pre-requisites, and they have a slower pace. I'm sure some of them would even allow you to attend school part time, but I imagine you would have to have a flexible schedule in order to do so. But the slower pace, even as a full time student, would allow you to work at least part time while going to school (although i work with someone now who goes to school full time and works full time... people who can do that amaze me!) Look at Temple, Jefferson, Univ of Pennsylvania, Eastern, Holy Family... or even Rutgers Camden and UMDNJ. You can do your pre-req's online, but I know a lot of schools prefer that you do them in person, especially for the science classes. Also, although a lot of pre-req's overlap for some schools, make sure you're familiar with what each one needs (like I know Villanova require religion courses, and UMDNJ wants your Psych 101 credits to be less than 5 years old). All of these schools have a range of preferred GPA's too, so it's worth it to check that out. And many also have direct entry MSN programs (you're accepted into the BSN and MSN at the same time and go straight through)... some of those require the GRE, some do not. As far as financial aid goes, since you already have a Bachelor's degree, you probably would not qualify for any federally funded grants. You could qualify for federal Subsidized Stafford Loans (if you haven't maxed-out your individual allowance on your Bachelors -- can't remember what that is) and Unsubsidized Stafford Loans. It stinks, but it's all about loans at this point . Definitely talk to financial aid at your local community college for that one. I hope this helps. Good luck to you on your new journey!
